Title: First & last homemade chimney.
Post by: Jules V. on April 28, 2020, 06:45:28 PM
After going through a few alterations/reworks, I'm finally satisfied with the final product. It weighs in at a whopping 12lbs and 2oz.

LOL, 12 oz in one hand and 12 lb in the other and we would fall over but that chimney would not be damaged in the fall

I’d buy 3 of them. I’d keep one of the 3 near the front door to use as a weapon if needed. Imagine swinging that against an intruders head!

I doubt anyone of us can buy one. Will be too expensive.

Just an observation. All SS, double walled cylinder, double walled heat shield, looks like a solid machined handle, looks like cast iron bottom.  Just on the SS parts and custom labor work involved would make this very expensive.

That there is pretty damn awesome. I noticed it’s all bolt together too without any welding - I like that.

If i have to purchase all the parts at retail, it would cost roughly $150. Probably would take me 4-5 hours to put one together considering the limited tools at my disposal. Angle/die grinder, table vise,  vise grips, drill, hammer, socket/wrenches were the only tools that i used.  By far the most challenging and time consuming potion was manually bending the 10 gauge perforated steel.
So yeah it cost nearly 10x as a Weber chimney but it's all worth it.  Labor is free since i find making my own things to be very enjoyable, relaxing and most importantly, rewarding.  Extremely proud on how it turned out on the double heat shield and even more so on the handle/strap assembly.
And oddly enough, not a single part/item were purchased with the intention of using it to build the chimney. Parts were either purchased for something else or something that i already have around the house.

For balance, i hold a 12 pack of Heineken on my left hand.

Is the cast iron piece with the holes a charcoal grate from a komodo?
