So a week or two ago I missed this super clean blue ssp for 150. I was the first to hit them up, they said they would take 100, but then they were really slow to respond, then asked if I could pay full price cause they had a lot of interest, I said sure, when do you wanna meet, they after waiting all day after they marked it sold, they told me they sold it to someone else, sorry. I was super upset 😡
But then this dirty old girl popped up at an estate sale in KC. I forgot about it the first day, but hit the guy up and said if he would take 40 I would be there at 9 am. There was also a Rotti in one of the pics.
I showed up and went to look at it. There was a couple commenting about it having a gas tank on it, so I just went back in and tried to pay first lol.
The guy came out and told me to check it out, I told him I was pretty sure the ring went with it, then I saw a second Rotti ring. He tossed those in as they didnt look like they would work on the vision grill they had there. Then he found me a couple pair of the skewers, and one motor. But we couldnt find either of the spots anywhere. I probably should have dug around more, because you would think that they were there somewhere.
Also got an extra grate when I was looking got the charcoal baskets! The charcoal grate is shot, but I have a brand new one already.
I started tearing it apart today, its missing the radius cut stainless panel, but I've already harrased another member who I felt was the performer expert here, and I belive I have secured one! And some other parts!
I grabbed a gen 2 blue sight unseen for 30, I was hoping to get there and find it with a good kettle, but it is one of the most rusty things I've ever seen. But came from a grillfella with some old wsms, and my birth year kettle, and a ww that I swore looked kinda green lol. He said he was a member here, but not very active. I need to hunt down his screen name.
Good news was I think I can use the burner tube, and maybe the lid bale.
Here are a couple bad pics. I only hit the porcelain with the grinder once. My back yard is a mess right now.

Cool story, can't wait for all the r's to be done, you nailed the rescue and respect !!!
-
I won't say I'm respecting it until I clean the garage up and make room for it. Its got that really caked on gunk that's a pain to scrape out, I am ready to get the dust off, so I can see the mist part of the lid.
-
Decided it needed to come off the frame to get cleaned properly. Gonna replace the hardware with stainless.
How does the flip up table come off? I might as well touch up these couple rust spots on the frame.
-
That is coming along nicely!
-
Pull the rod away from the panel to release the tension. Grab one end of the rod and pull it out of the frame. Should take you no more than 10 seconds.
-
Nice! Thanks for the info, didnt want to break it if there was something I wasnt seeing.
@Mike in Roseville this thing is so dirty! It has a ring of carbon baked on the outside of the lip on the lid, and its about impossible to scrape off. I think it might be because there is some crazing around there. The bowl has a lot of crazing too, but otherwise its in really good shape.
Oh and if these are stainless, they really took a beating. This is the bowl from the gen 2 I grabbed.
-
Any advise on a few small spots of rust on the frame? Can you use that evaporust stuff on a q-tip or something? Then should I spray paint the whole frame or just touch up the rust spots?
-
Naval jelly for the small spots

Nice thats what I happened to grab at Wal-Mart.
-
Broke a bolt off in one of the bottom crossbars, cause it was turned a little. Now I gotta figure out how to drill it out or something. Was hoping to get this frame painted today
-
Can you buy these Maltese cross pieces?
-
After some research on the site I found out that a bike shop sells these things called star nuts, they were 4 bucks a piece. They are the 1-1/8" size. The 1" ones were too small.
I squared them up a little with the grinder because I had read that someone had put a bulge in their pipe with one. They went in pretty easy, and I just tapped from the side to straighten it out as it went in. Gonna try to do something about this rust and get it painted and put back together.
-
coming along nicely
-
Thanks! I can't wait to get it done. I'm not gonna want to cook on it afterwards! Might put it in the living room lol
-
Sandblasting didn't go as well as I had it planned out in my head. My buddy had a harbor freight sand blaster, and it didn't really eat through the paint like I thought it would. Plus he didnt have much light. I did get the welds and other rusty spots cleaned up, but it looks like I missed a little rust on this one cross piece. Guess I'm about to break out the sand paper this morning and try to get it finished up.
-
Idk who's belly button they get this stuff from, but it better work this time. I missed a ton of rust last night
-
I think pink would be a fabulous new color for that SSP frame. Call it the barbie edition like that one crazy scammer on facebook and e-bay lol.
All jokes aside, it is looking good man.
-
A pink frame with a black kettle would look good. I have a can of pink spray paint from my daughters softball helmet. So I had already thought about it lol.
Bought a sand blaster for 12.50 at an estate sale. So my next project will probably get a better blasting.
They had a couple pk grills, the wheels were rusted off of one, its 20. And a decent red one for 37.50
Should I go get them? To resell? Seems pretty expensive already
-
So I think I got the majority of the rust off, but I'm tired of sanding. Started putting paint on. Maybe I will re-do it if I figure out the sand blaster. It definitely needs to go to bare metal and get powder coated or something.
-
The coatings are much tougher on the gen1/gen2 than gen3/gen4. That's just too much work sanding the powder coat to get to bare metal.
And yeah sorry for the long delay but i finally got the panel boxed up. Should be out tomorrow.
-
Definately no need to apologize! I really appreciate it. The high heat paint said it was not recommended to use a primer, so the finish ended up pretty rough. But I think I got most if not all of the rust, there were some spots with a little pitting.
-
Dropped of the tank yesterday, picked it up full and recertified today for 13 and some change. They even slapped this fancy sticker on it!. I kinda want to paint it, I might just try to sew up one of those cover things for it though.
I took steel wool to the vent for hours yesterday, ended up using the corner of a razor to scape around the letters, still didn't get it all off, but it looks decent.
Forgot to take the hardware for the gas assist and lid bale to get stainless, have to make another trip to ace.
Painted my white walls, now they are bulged out. And I did the peanut butter polish on some wheels I got from @Mike in Roseville. Thanks brethren!
Oh and I robbed the casters off of my genesis platinum, one was brand new from ace.
-
Looking good, I have a spare room and 3 or 4 ssp's come on down to Doraville
-
Coming together nicely!
-
Not as nice as I was shooting for, but I will have no problem cooking on it now. I might wait till next year though, and bring it in the living room for the winter lol
-
Oh and here are pics of the plastic that the squirrel had chewed on. The frame even had some of the powder coat missing where they chewed on that end cap lol
-
I hate squirrels. We have so many because my neighbor likes to feed them. Luckily they haven’t chewed my grills like that! But the fence post are all chewed up.

We have a ton here, but plenty of pecans and walnuts for them to chew on I guess.
-
Got some more parts today! Bought wooden spools from Michael's, aluminum and stainless steel washer, and @Jules V. sent the panel I was afraid I wouldnt be able to find too! Will post some pics tomorrow. Gonna get some pics on the WSM thread too, so if your into that type of thing check it out tomorrow lol. I will give you a hint, Goldilocks...
-
You got Jules helping you out, you know it’s gonna be good. I’m always so envious of his builds.

Me too! He is quite the grillfella.
I got the gas assist hooked up. I need a better saw, broke 2 of these wooden spools trying to make lid bale rollers.
-
Great work!
-
Thanks! Its a lot of work really, but I'm excited to finally have a performer. I need to get rid of some of these other kettles before my wife starts hating these things
-
Goodbye red mist...
Thanks to @ReanimatedRobot for being a hardcore enabler!
I do wish it was one with the ssp/mastertouch thermometer, but this will do for now. They wouldnt haggle when I got there, so I went way over my cheap budget.
One ding in the lid, I will get pics in a little bit
Oh and I robbed a 2015 lid bale off of a flip up table performer the other day too. I will get this thing done one of these days
-
Does this mean you finally got the C & B green you’ve been wanting?

Yeah I guess there is a crate and barrel up in Leawood, so maybe an older one will eventually pop up too. I really want the other style of handle. I am gonna have to visit C&B also sometime.
