Title: Found a yellow Weber at a yard sale - any idea on value
Post by: CABarrow on June 10, 2013, 06:52:25 PM
Hi - my husband wanted  a charcoal grill and I found one at a yard sale - a yellow Weber, wooden handle - in pretty good condition - the grates have some rust but it was only $15 with a bag of charcoal and a brand new charcoal starter so I figured it was worth the fifteen bucks.  Anyway - now my husband thinks it might be worth something - is it?

Got pics?  If its in nice shape with minimal chips and rust, it could be worth a lot more than 15.  Its something you might want to hold onto for yourself.  They don't come up very often, especially in good condition!

Do you have any pictures of it? It's hard to say without knowing the condition and age. Yellows are pretty rare and people around here (WKC) would probably value them more than many other colors. Overall, a weber kettle probably isn't really going to be worth that much unless its very old (50's probably), an almost extinct model (Westerner, the One that looks like the well, etc.) or new in the box. Regardless, a yellow in any condition for $15 is a great deal! Clean it up and enjoy it for years! And they turn to an orangish color when they get hot!

Definitely show some pictures. There are few owned by members and cherished. By pictures we can be close in age and size.

I'll take some photos and post - chances are I'll keep it - once I clean up the grates it'll be a great grill and you can't buy a junky one for $15!!  I'm trying to figure out where to put the photos  :)

Yellow kettles are some of the rarest. People on this forum (and eBay) have spent $100 or more on just the bowl & lid in pretty poor condition. If yours is in really good shape it is easily worth $100 or more. If it is really nice I could see it going for $200 or so. Of course, they only way to find the true value is to try to sell it. You'd have a pretty good customer pool here.  ;) Most of us will tell you to keep and treasure it though.

Like others have said, please post photos of it. If you're not sure how to do that you can private message me and I will give you my personal email address. You can email the photos to me and I will post them in this thread for you.

Yes, it works, and yes, that is a very nice one. I know it has some rough spots, but all things considered that's really nice. Should easily be worth $150 to the right buyer. Do you plan to keep or sell it?

Great! They clean up really nice with a little TLC. And like someone else mentioned, they change colors like a sunset when they're hot! Let us know if you need any help with the cleanup!

The raised weber letters and no date stamp indicate its a late 70's I think...

Are you able to see the photos on photobucket?  Is there a way to post here on the site?

Place img tags around the full image's full URL. If you paste that address into your post and then highlight it there's a shortcut button right under the Bold button that will add the tags for you.

Hit the "quote" button as if to reply to this reply and you'll see the raw text I mean that pulls the image into this thread. The image's full URL is just that, starts with http:// and ends with .jpg

YEP !!!!

It does work.....you can click on the  { IMG } link for each photo, it will flash "copied", then drop in your posting box here ( right click: paste ) & they will show up in living color......

That one looks really, really nice, actually......the one handle is dinged, but other than that there's not many chips & the color is still real vibrant, not weathered or faded very much......nice !!!!!

I'll pull one over for you so these munchkins can get a straight away look at it ....... 8)

I did this one with 0000 steel wool, powdered Barkeepers Friend & a little warm water. That should be a great start. Replacement grates are easily found at most hardware and home improvement stores. Please stick with weber replacement grates if the existing can't be salvaged. The knockoffs don't belong anywhere near that big ball of sunshine.  ;D

PS:
We'll get you sorted out on what cleaners are good to use without doing damage....just check in when you'd like to get started & people will direct you to the proper methods ( almost always with pictures to see how it works)

Here's a recent posting with quite a bit about old rusty grates....

And Brian (Zavod44) from here makes gorgeous replacement wood handles, even for those older double rivet ones......see the main site page  on the right hand side......

EDIT:

Sorry, it's up at the top of the page, about the handles..................
This goes direct ~~~>

Welcome to WKC! You got yourself a steal of a deal! Congratulations! Looks like late 70s.... More than likely 1978 given the lid vent markings. Just out of curiosity is there a letter stamped on the lid vent? I'm thinking there isnt but I'm curious.

That's in very good shape. I have a 18 and a recently acquired 22. The 22 is rough and I paid $25 for it. The 18 cost me $35. I would have a real hard time selling because well I'm the creepy guy down the street with all the webers. If I did it would have to be to some one here bc I know they would appreciate it like I do. On the other hand I can see why some one would get what they can for it. Hey this is America!  Land of great freedoms.

Here's a few pics of mine.

This is the 18 hot!  Like the sun setting.

Enjoy your sunshine. It is a joy to cook on and watch.

Very nice yellow 22 and thanks for sharing your great find. We look forward to seeing it cook up some great food. By the way, that original grate will clean up. They don't make them like that anymore. Please don't throw it away!

Absolutely ridiculous.  Pay 15 at a yard sale, ask people on this forum what it's worth, then advertise it for sale at 10x the purchase price???

While I appreciate that she offered it for sale here, supposedly first, that is the kind of sh*t reserved for the "other" site.

she asked what it was worth.
we gave her high numbers.
she offered it to us.
that's not ridiculous.

Now if she were already a member, and she found the grill and posted about it and the price she paid THEN offered it for 10x what she paid - then I would consider it ridiculous.
The harsh attitude is the kind of shit reserved for the "other" site.

I understand your effort and stance on defending the community. I appreciate that - thank you. :)

Looking back through the thread though, I think she seems genuine.
Being a skeptic is fine. It's natural and human nature.

Presenting skepticism of another's intent without making assumptions and being rude is challenging. In situations like this, I'd rather err on the side of innocence.

I see both sides of the story and made this comment a day or 3 ago.

~~~  She came here asking for info about the grill, which she was supplied with, and well after the fact decided to sell it.  That's not the same as coming in trying to sell a kettle right out of the gate.  Actually, I think she did the perfect thing.  Posted up a semi-rare grill, provided pics, and even followed up with the desire to sell.  As Troy (?) said not too long ago, he'd rather see it posted here than ~not~ here.
~~~

I haven't seen it listed at the 'other' site, so I'm assuming it was only posted here.  I love the quality & quantity of pics Carrie Ann provided in her listing.  She did pay $15 and listed it for $150 OBO.  Yeah, it's a healthy mark-up/asking price, but she said OBO.  Golly tossed her a hunnert and she accepted.  That's 66% of her asking price.  Like we'd do anything different if we stumbled upon something worth more than we paid and had zero emotional attachment.  I'm just glad she offered it here and someone here got it.  I'd rather see it in my back yard, but this is second best.  :D
