Title: 1956 weber bros metal works bar b que. restore or let stand?
Post by: zorknards2 on June 06, 2013, 10:14:07 PM
I purchased this weber from an elderly man at a yard sale for 10 dollars everything is there, heavy duty grates triangle ash catcher steel legs welded handles etc. on this grill paint is in pretty good shape does show age though hower the slot where the legs conect to the base has a hole through the weld spots causing one of them to be loose, the rubber wheels one of them has a half inch crack and there is a dent at the openi g on both the lid and base causing the lid to only fit one way. should I see about restoring this or should I leave it alone.

It is an opinion thing really.  It is not like restoring it will make it more valuable on the widely traded weber antiquities market.

Also, pictures.

Anyway, If it was me, i would not restore it in the sense that i would not replace anything on it that did not come from the same year...which is to say .. You will find nothing from that year to replace on it.

I would clean it carefully and marvel at it.  I would also cook on it one time, then clean it carefully again and marvel at it. No more cooking.

WOW!! Nice score! Can you share some pics with us? A couple of us on here have been discussing doing some custom 50s style kettles and to see one would be awesome! What size is it?

Oh and welcome to the WKC!  :D

You will need to add them to photobucket or imageshack etc and then use the url tags icon( the mona lisa painting) to point to the image files that you uploaded to the image hosting server.

This kettle is WOW!! Love it!! A 1956! This is how we are here, we get excited by these kinds of things.... Congratulations on a phenomenal score and at a steal of a deal!

This is one step closer to a '52 original. Theres one out there begging to be rescued.

Cooker or a looker? This would be fun to try some vintage 50s recipes on. :D

Welcome Zorknards2,

That's an extremely nice score. I am looking forward to seeing it in the daylight. If we can get a good look at it I am sure we can also help in the light restore.

Thanks again for posting and joining.

What a great find! This grill is exactly what this web site is for, this place has the most concentrated collection of Weber information and enthusiasts in the world. There are people here who can guide you through a resto step by step and plenty others like me who may not have the specific info you need but will encourage you to see it through. That's a great piece of Americana you've got there, I'm really looking forward to seeing more of it.

New members are obligated to offer their first posted kettle to a club member of the same age as the kettle posted. That would be me. All kidding aside, I would love to find a '56 someday. We all know they're out there. This just happens to be the most recent evidence. I need to get a better photo of the vent once you clean everything up. I'm collecting photos of as many vents as I can, and would love a Chicago IL vent in high res. PM me for instructions when you can.

Thanks. I need one at least 1200 x 1200 pixels of the entire vent, with at least a half inch of space around it. Use the macro setting if you can, and try to avoid direct sunlight or shadows. Whatever you can do that's close is much appreciated.

Yeah - I know the feeling, but use a little windex those bi-focals and get busy. There's at least 100 of us that NEED to see this grill returned to it's rightful duties. You CANNOT take too many pictures of this one.

Explain that tab Duke.  It looks adhered to the vent instead of portruding from the edge like in Zorks picture and like the typical vent tab we know.

sorry guys havnt responded in a couple days doing that thing that pays the bills. I am going to take some bar keepers friend and 00 steel wool to the ash catcher and legs and see if I can get some shine back into them I will clean the outside with some dawn and a scotch brite pad and I don't know about the wheels they look as they were red in color but I don't know how to get the color back out will research cleaners I guess any idea?

It would not surprise me if those wheels are/were red. Seems before 1958, the wheels had either red or white rims. The 0000 steel wool always works like a charm on the porcelain and the pan and legs. Also Mothers Mag polish really cleans up the legs and the pans. The legs look like they are steel.  :)

Wood bleach and linseed oil bring the original paint back on rusted metal. Would be your best bet on the wheels.
