Title: Restoring a kettle... Best method for cleaning?
Post by: hawgheaven on September 04, 2018, 10:47:42 AM
I have a project ahead, and I have bought 4/0 steel wool to tackle the bowl and lid. What do you folks use with the steel wool. Any special cleaner? Dawn? I know the razor blade is your friend for the initial crud removal, but getting that shine back... ?

Thanks for any help here...  :)

Are you gonna cook on it?

If i'm using it as a cooker I don't
try an get the inside back to a mirror
shine.
Scrape out the crud, free up the vents
take the 4 aught to the outside and get cooking.
ymmv.

Yup, it's a cooker, and a part time looker. No detergent of any kind to the outside surface? Thanks for the response!

@hawgheaven , i use Dawn or Bar Keepers Friend and the 0000# steel wool on the outside after getting the "big" stuff off with a razor blade... I just cleaned the inside of a kettle bowl and lid for a buddy, I wasn't going for the new look but I used 0000# wool and Simple Green, with little work, it came out amazing.

Pick up the soap!! :o

Sorry, Left out the soap!

Straight Simple Green or Dawn and the steel wool.
Kinda making your own scratch free SOS.
Always keep whatever you're scrubbing wet.

This!

Otherwise it’s hot water and blue Dawn for me.

I usually razor scrape the inside of the bowl and lid first.  After that, I set the kettle on a metal table over my lawn and scrub the inside and outside of the lid with a SOS pad and some additional Dawn blue soap.  Once the lid and bowl are dry, I then buff the exterior of the lid and bowl with the #0000 steel wool.  That's when it really shines.

An amazing de-greaser is Spray Nine

Then use 0000 steel wool, and a garden hose to rinse. It will sparkle.

For baked on soot like the crap inside the lid
I tried Rutland wood stove glass cleaner.

The smoke residue just runs off.

One was “scrapped “ earlier this year (yeah in the bath tub, that was me...” last weekend I used an eighth of a bottle of dish detergent on the inside, left the lid off and let the rain (downpour followed by steady rain for an hour) clean the inside of it for me... then made dinner in it later that same day...

Maintenance wash really...
