Title: Okay who is really interested one one of these?
Post by: zavod44 on May 24, 2013, 07:09:20 PM
We made this at work.  This will replace the old style ash catcher bar.   This is strictly a replacement, for the old one.  So before we start making these who is really interested in one of these?

Interested..  What's your pricing on these?
Title: Re: Okay who is really interested one one of these?

Yes this just replaces the original part that would have come on the grill.  The H style is from the newer style Performers and whatever else they are now put on.....If you have the older grill with the older ash catcher you will need this part....

We are gonna bolt one of these on an old SS performer this weekend as an experiment to see if it is gonna work.  I'm thinking $25 total shipped.  That depends how many people want them, I might be able to shave a few bucks....

You have to have a good old style one touch or grab a few at some hardware sotres before they are gone.
Weber Discontinued the 7409 one touch. All they are going to sell is the H clip style.
I might need a couple.. 8)

 did you use aluminium?

Just wondering, cause the non-rust factor was disscussed.....

Could probably use two, inany case.....

OSH near my house has a few of the old style ash sweeps. I'm interested to see how the part fits. The central hole was the nomial dimension from mine so the decreased tolerance should make it fit better. I'll want one for my ss project! Thanks for bringing this to life, Brian!

As far as ash sweeper #7409 running out, I'm working on a part that will allow #7444 to work with the old style ash catcher setup so don't worry. You will still need this ashbar though.

If were gonna one off something, I'd rather have the best. I'd like a SS one that worked with the stainless H sweepers that are the future and built to last.

Troy or Brian could do a crowdtilt funding project to get this thing going also. For this I'd like to see it around $30-50 range

I'm interested as well .

Ok, so here's my take on this. Are we wanting restoration parts or mod parts?
If it could be the best of both worlds, that would be cool.  Oh yeah, it needs to be affordable.
At $50, its not. At $20, I think it is. I'm not counting shipping costs, just the part itself.

Facts:
The old sweepers will be gone and only old stockpiles will be available.
Old MT's and any old Performer grills could benefit from this part.
Retrofitting to the newer style ash bucket is always an option.
Installing the newer ash bucket on and old bowl requires a mod of some sort.
Hose clamps is one. Thats the easy method, but I for one don't care for the look.
There are other options, cut a groove in the leg socket or use self tapping screws to hold the ring to the socket.
Both of those options permanently damage the bowl and therefore can possibly reduce the collectible value. Are we wanting function over originality?
So, what is the best option?  A consensus would help the guy who is willing to take the time to build them, he is the one risking his time and energy and most of all money.

I like the origianl part. I also like the idea of having it work with the newer H style OT.
It doesn't need to be SS. Aluminum should work as long is it can support the weight.
Steel is still an option. Users would just need to do maintenance on that part. Clean, protect with high heat bbq paint. It will last a long time.
The trick to the H drive is the thickness of the material that they use for the washer. Its thinner than the old style washer.
Conclusion:
Can this cross bar be reproduced that would work with the H drive?
My opinion is that its probably not worth it. At least not for most people who do restorations.
I would just stock up on the older OT assemblies or look to convert to the newer ash buckets.
So is there enough interest in this part being reproduced?  I would say its a limited market.

So Brain, you got your work cut out for you.
Without your efforts, we wouldn't have the most amazing wood handles for our grills.
I think that without them, the hobby would not be what it is today.
How easily can you take an old beat up grill and make it pop back to life?

Now if we can get someone to make old style wheels and ash pans for 3 wheelers? Anyone?
Thanks again Brian! And Gummi too for all the effort he put into this as well. 8)

You can't just cut an H into the ashbar. Long story short, the ashbar doesnt rotate with the sweeper handle but the H washer does. I have a part drawn up that will secure the H handle to the sweep but allows the bar to rotate. Im waiting for the parts to come in from Mikeinctown to finalize tolerances. See my DIY thread for more info.

Post by: zavod44 on May 25, 2013, 10:05:03 AM
I'm just trying to provide a part to those who need it.  If someone gets the older style ash sweepers they can put this part right on. It's just as easy as that.... If someone wants to make some mods we can discuss that at some point.  Right now if your bucket is hanging off, you can put it back.  If you replace everything now with new parts it will take ten years to go bad anyhow......I'm just trying to gauge if this is worth it for us to even fool with these....We can make 10 if people are interested and go from there....

Brian,  I would be in for one at the price you quoted.  Since I can't seem to find an original ash pan for my old 26er, thiis would be the best solution.

Will aluminum hold the weight of the ring, bucket, and a bucket full of ash?

How about a bucket of ash + water? (i know it's bad, but mistakes happen :))

I for one am excited about this. People here are willing to take the time to research, design and fabricate replacement parts that are no longer available to maintain vintage kettles in their original configuration, from handles to ash pans and other components....I'd love to learn to make vintage ash catchers and ash triangles, with the right tools and determination, it can be done. I just need to practice. This is what makes this hobby even more exciting. We can restore kettles to original configuration or make a nice custom cooker.

If there is demand I can make the sheet metal pattern for the old style ashcatcher collar. It wouldn't be too much work to draw it out but actually making them them may be.  :)

Success!  Works perfectly, feels strong, the bends must also add strength hence the weird shape.  The guy at  work mounted it and his SS performer is back in action, Gummi your drawings are dead on.....I'll try to do a test on a grill I have at the house, but for now it is a perfect replacement part.  It may or not be tonight, the Hawks are in Game & so I will not be thinking grills that's for sure. The Hawks just need to trounce the Dead Wings....I'm calling 5-0 Hawks in a rout, sending the Wings off to the eastern conference once and for all......

The very outside tab rusted due to the differences int he metals.  Where the aluminum met the steel, it corroded, and rotted away.  At least aluminum on aluminum won't have that effect....

Brian, those are beautiful.

And damn my timing, because I just a couple of days ago got my package from Weber to update my latest project to the modern ash can ring and H-style OT sweep.  Now I've gotta decide which way to go.

Really nice to have a choice, though.  Thanks for all of your hard work.

Same story with mine but it didn't snap off. The annoying part is that it corroded the One touch collar and makes it look ugly.

Brian looks great! How we can we adapt or make a new male "H" clip? If the legs on the male end were just a tad longer, we could all convert. I am now watching Amazon for the old sweep, they are getting fewer and far between... :( They are priced like gold and fewer are showing up. My SS just took the dumps on the sweep.

Just joined, to let you know you can get the old style one touch cleaning system here, link below, $16.99 plus shipping. I ordered covers for my SS Performers here also, good quality and shipped fast.
The new style ash ring will fit just on top of the leg holders, there is enough of a gap for the tabs to fit in, no need to cut a slit in the leg holders. I did this on my 1993 red head SS Performer.

I would really be happy to buy one of these ash catcher support bars. I broke mine on my 1996 performer when trying to remove the cleaning blades. Weber wants me to replace my kettle.....what?!?!  $25 sounds great.

I don't need, but I am glad that someone is making them - seems like an easy fab and so vital to some folks.  Good on you Z  8)

Hello, I just found  the ss weber performer abandon in friends back yard  and the ash sweeper and support bracket are shot.  I wondering if you help with these parts.

If I recall this is what hold the ring that supports the ash pot/bucket's handle, correct?

For me it was the ring that went bad so I replaced it with one of the newer rings and except for finagling to get to all three mounting points I prefer the newer ones of the original which just wobbled around too much.

The newer ones have three tabs that mount to slots where the leg protrusions are. The problem is the older performers (SS tables) don't have the slots!

Fortunately all you have to do is bend the 3 tabs so they align with the leg protrusions and use a stainless steel hose clamp/band clamp around each tab and leg.

I considered cutting slits in the newer ring to match the bar (like the ones you're making) but the three point mounting makes a much more stable ring.
