Title: Updated 5/23: My 1st Weber Gasser, help with ID - Finished Pics added
Post by: Rub on May 03, 2018, 11:54:39 AM
Through the help of a long-time grillfella here I was pointed in the direction of this beauty. He said with the wide wooden slats it was likely a first generation from Weber. Anybody have any insight? I'll probably get it this weekend and see how she looks. Hopefully the innards are in good shape.

Edit: Lol looking at the pic I put up I guess it's a Genesis II? Is the difference between a II and III the size? Any idea on the year? TIA.

Good looking gasser, I like the wide slats on those models

Nice! Yes, wide slabs = first gen. Also, the way the white walls come right out to the edge, the black controls, etc.

I'm guessing II vs III is whether or not it came with a side burner? Your frame has the space ... in subsequent generations they did not include a longer frame for models that did not come with the side burner.

On the other hand, I'm only guessing about all of that.

Based on the wheels alone, it should be early to mid 80s. Those are the best looking Weber wheels IMO... love the wide white wall!

Cool thanks for the info guys. I know zero about Weber gassers but I'm ready to learn.
So a first generation Genesis II maybe since no side burner, from early to mid '80s. Got it thanks.

Looks like the Genesis debuted in ‘85. Give this a read.... https://www.weber.com/US/en/blog/behind-the-grill/class-of85-the-creators-of-the-genesis/weber-30515.html

@SixZeroFour @LightningBoldtz  - can either of you help us out pinpointing the age of this Genesis?

Does that manual in the plastic have the serial # printed at the top right corner?    It will give you the age via the Age guide.  Should be able to enter the number at Weber and get the model.

Or, there should be a label/badge that you can see once you lift off the control panel cover.  Hopefully it's still there and the print is legible.

Nice gasser.
The castings for the sides of the lid may have stamps inside with the year. Also cookbox may have a number casted along side where the drip rail slides are.

And those wheels are the nicest. I have a set of those on my Gen2 Performer.

It does. As soon as I get it from my agent I'll post up the serial #. Thanks.

@Rub

Based on the schematics, it looks like the Genny3 had a side burner, the Genny2 did not.  Otherwise, they are the same.

https://www.weber.com/US/en/help/schematics/browse.aspx?model=431001

https://www.weber.com/US/en/help/schematics/browse.aspx?model=471001

Did she make it to you yet ?  If not, did you get the SN from your agent ?

Also, best I can pin the year down to is between 85 and 92.  85 being the launch year of the Genny and I know that the Genny 1000 was definitely available in 93 (not sure about earlier).

Rub, that is definitely a Genesis II and a very early production model at that.
The wide slats that run lengthwise on the lower frame are the same as mine. The frame itself is all welded; no sections held together with threaded inserts.
Mine had a serial number from 1985.

I am biased, but I think that 13 bar gennys are the best gassers ever.
I put SS bars from RCPlanebuyer in mine and it is great!

Got it! He forgot to bring the owner’s manual and cookbook but I’ll get them later. This thing is pretty slick! Built like a tank, heavy, and nice features. Has like a weight scale to estimate how much propane is left. Also a meat temp guide that refers to “rare” as 140 lol. Lava rocks and charcoal on a grate over the flavorizer bars. Is it even supposed to have a grate there? Once I get her cleaned up I can see it being one of my go-tos. Is there a cover that will fit it? Here’s some pics before I clean.

Holy smokes!  She's beautiful!     As ATS said, lose the charcoal, grate and lava rock and then decide where to go from there.   Check the burner tubes and see if they are solid.  Hook up a propane tank and fire it up.  This will help check the regulator, valves and tubes.  If the crossover tube happens to be shot, try lighting the other tubes manually.

Got it cleaned up, scrubbed out and fired up. Everything works as it should. Flavorizer bars need to be replaced. I put it back together and grilled a pair of Mother's Day prime ribeyes. Tomorrow I'll do some touchup painting and see about refinishing the redwood. I'm loving this Genny. I tried to use the Weber site and add this grill to my grills and learn the year but the prefix isn't listed. Any insight? L3 - 048690

I'd give Weber a call and let them try to register it.    Clean up looks nice.   Not sure what you did the cookbox with, but it looks pretty good.  If you want to get it really nice and shiny, hit it with an angle grinder and a cup wire brush.  and watch it shine.

When touching up, be careful on the end caps and the outside of the cookbox.  it's a textured surface that no one I know has found a way to replicate.  You have to remove the flaking paint of course, but do so with a very light touch.   Then hit with some High Heat Ultra from Rustoleum.  it's semi glossy and has a nice look.

To retouch the Weber Logo plate, it's easiest if you can take it off, but it's not absolutely necessary.    Spray the whole front of it with the same Rusto then put it face down on some ultra fine grit sandpaper and move it back and forth.   The paint on the highest layer will get removed and leave the Logo looking stunning.

JC yours looks fantastic! Do you remember what you did to the redwood? I want to refinish mine then do something to it to keep it from getting water stains etc.

Thanks very much @demosthenes9 I appreciate it. I appreciate your tips too. I don't really notice a texture on the cook box though. It looks easy enough to take the cast parts off to clean and spray paint. And the logo plate idea is awesome. I'm afraid if I take it off I'll never get it back on as snug as it is now, so I'll probably do it where it is.

I emailed Weber with the serial number and they had a fairly generic response. Pretty sure you guys knew more than this cat.
"Hello Rub, Thanks for reaching out to us. Based on the photo and serial number, you have a Genesis 2 LP, model # 431001, made between 1985 and 1992."

Thanks for the help you guys.

Thanks for the help you guys.

You're welcome Rub..  It's possible that I'm mistaken about texture.  Perhaps it's just on the end caps or maybe it's all smooth. On Gennys I've dealt with, it feels like there's a little sand or something mixed in with the paint.  It definitely doesn't feel the same as the smooth aluminum inside the cook box.

Ill see if I can dig up some photos showing what I'm talking about. Pee than a few of them have been posted over at TVWBB.

For the logo plate, you can do it where it is, just be very careful when sanding.  I'd reend a sandpaper block quite a bit larger than the logo plate so that you can be sure to sand flat and level. I screwed one of these up as well. And the logo surface was noticeably uneven.

Lastly, on the age of the grill.  Unfortunately, Weber didn't tie date info into the serial numbers on this Gen.  That came later.

Chris Allingham, over at TVWBB has done some research on I and wrote about it here....

They usually have a ring compression clip or whatever it's called.  Basically, same thing that locks the wheels on the axle, but without the plastic.

Correct. Easy to break them if you take off the badge, but they can be found at a well-stocked hardware store. I've done it a few times. I have occasional had a bear of a time getting the bolts on the end panels to break free. The early ones used actual solid nuts which can freeze up, and it's tough to keep the heads from spinning in the end panel. later models used a stamped nut thing that comes off much easier.

Rub, these are pictures of the date stamps from my Genesis jr. The first one is from the sides of the lid and the second one is from the bottom of the cookbox right in the front by where the drip pan slides out. The Genesis 1 that I restored was from 86, it had the dates casted in it also. I hope this helps.

Thanks guys. I got the end panels off easily yesterday and got a coat of HHU on the outside. Looks like they’ll benefit from another coat.

I also found the date stamp, thanks @Kneab . I was a little disappointed to see it was an ‘87. I was hoping for ‘85. But regardless I’m enjoying this grill a lot and the resto. New ss bars come in tomorrow. I bought some Olympic stain and sealer in one for the woodwork and I’ll get on that this weekend. I guess I’ll sand and repaint the frame while I’m at it. Thanks again everyone for the tips and help!

Can't wait to see the finished results.   Sure, 85 would have been great, but this one is still very nice.  One of the oldest ones I have seen.  Don't know if it's in the plans, but you might want to replace the nuts and bolts with SS ones.

It's been raining every day here for 2 weeks straight, making any resto efforts a challenge. But I think I'm done, for now anyway. First of all thanks to everyone here and at TVWBB for the info and tips. They saved me countless hours of work and research. I am no restoration guru by any stretch of the imagination, so it was all very helpful. And I'm really happy with the way it turned out.

I started by taking all of the wood off and numbering each piece. Then it all got a light sanding and a coat of Olympic Maximum Stain and Sealant in One. I wanted something that would be somewhat weatherproof so my cold beer wouldn't leave a ring. This fits the bill and I really like the color.
(http://pics.weberkettleclub.com/images/2018/05/20/IMG_1279.md.jpg) (http://pics.weberkettleclub.com/image/fOM)

(http://pics.weberkettleclub.com/images/2018/05/20/IMG_1313.md.jpg) (http://pics.weberkettleclub.com/image/fOb)
The metal brackets that hold the wood all had some rust bubbles under the paint, so I took a razor scrapper to them and exposed everything. I put these parts in some EvapoRust overnight and it dod a pretty good job. I the endcaps off the hood and lightly sanded them with 400 grit, and removed and cleaned the thermometer.
(http://pics.weberkettleclub.com/images/2018/05/20/IMG_1231.md.jpg) (http://pics.weberkettleclub.com/image/fOQ)

(http://pics.weberkettleclub.com/images/2018/05/20/IMG_1227.md.jpg) (http://pics.weberkettleclub.com/image/fOA)

(http://pics.weberkettleclub.com/images/2018/05/20/IMG_1330.md.jpg) (http://pics.weberkettleclub.com/image/fOX)
I kept taking parts off the frame until it was completely stripped. I hadn't noticed all of the subterranean rust bubbles under the paint before on the frame, so that added an extra hour or so exposing and scrapping those parts. In hindsight I wish I would have sanded and feathered the good paint to bare metal edges better as they show up some after the repaint. I hit the exposed parts with a Rustoleum product that neutralizes rust, then sprayed the entire cart with their HH Ultra, which was the same thing I used on the end caps. Everything got 2-3 coats.

For the fire box I was going to use Rustoleum HH (1200*) flat, but then I saw they have a 2000* flat with a 'no peel' guarantee. Sounded perfect so I gave it a try. So far so good.
(http://pics.weberkettleclub.com/images/2018/05/20/IMG_1341.md.jpg) (http://pics.weberkettleclub.com/image/fOd)

I cleaned up some rust spots on the control panel and hit them with the neutralizer paint, then 0000'd the overspray off. I put everything back together and was damn happy to not have any leftover screws! Oh yeah, I painted all of the hardware too.
(http://pics.weberkettleclub.com/images/2018/05/20/IMG_1309.md.jpg) (http://pics.weberkettleclub.com/image/fOj)

Once I had it all together I hooked the tank back up, hit the ignitor, and nothing. Damn, it worked before. I guess it's going to be stick lighters for a while. At least the burners still work.
(http://pics.weberkettleclub.com/images/2018/05/20/IMG_1392.md.jpg) (http://pics.weberkettleclub.com/image/fO4)

I'm really happy with the way it turned out. I was originally going to paint the fire box HHU too, but I like the contrast I get with the flat. I've bought and put in the recommended SS flavorizer bars. Forgot a pic but you know what they look like. All that's left is to probably improve the cook grates with something different, and find a decent cover.

I upgraded my phone/camera recently so I went a little crazy playing with the portrait setting. Here's the finished pics. It's still raining but it let up for 10 minutes and I took some quickly. So here is my 1987 Weber Genesis II, bought for $75 at the estate sale of the deceased former mayor of Winter Garden, FL.

Thanks very much guys. I'm finding a quality gasser can be a nice distraction from charcoal every now and then. I grilled up a couple  of cap-on sirloins last night for dinner. It was a first time for these for me and I learned a big lesson - you need to remove a lot of the fat cap before grilling or you'll have a fire. I won't make that mistake again, I killed one of my temp probes lol.

Redhead gassers have the same color change as kettles.

Nice cook.  Good gassers really do rock, I don't care what the "purists" say.  No muss, no fuss.   Open the tank valve, crank the knobs, fire the ignitor and in less than 10 minutes (probably 5), you're cooking.

It does get pretty hot. This was after about 7 minutes. I'm guessing 650+ degrees.

Yeah I can leave mine on high for 20 minutes and the hottest it gets is 550. The second I start opening the lid and using it, it cooks around the 400-450 range.  Not bad but not nearly as hot as I would like. It’s hard to get a good sear.

Update
The High Heat Ultra Rust-Oleum black paint I did the end caps with is failing. It’s getting tacky and transferring onto the inside of the grill cover, then getting onto the lid. I’ve never covered it hot. Anyone see this before? Disappointed in it.

Does it look like this I also had an issue with that paint but it is hard to trace down.  So what happened with my 1000 was it ended up having a nat gas manifold they just  stuck a regulator on it fired it up thing went past 700 and pretty much the lid sides were toasted.  Ended up getting a propane manifold from another member on the other gasser forum.

However could have been other issues with that paint and it was in the prep, had done what I thought was a good job using simple green to degrease it and took care to rinse it but I did not wipe it down when I was done with acetone or denatured alcohol and I think this was an issue.  Thru some searching I did recently I came across on a painting metal site that simple green can leave a slight film so it needs to be wiped down with a solvent before painting.

Because I was so unhappy just took the lid apart I have a performer also so was not without a grill.  I took my wire cup brush and just took it down to pure metal as you know there is a texture on those lids and nobody has been able to replicate it.  Then the usual used simple green and rinsed off then wiped it down with acetone.  What I would tell you as I originally thought was the simple green and a good rinse was enough for prep it was not when I wiped it down with the acetone it still was picking up the  remnants of that black paint I had wire brushed off.

I just sprayed them last week putting it back together use 900 degree caliper paint high gloss it is and a pain since like any gloss paints its multiple coats to get it to look a uniform gloss.  I did not get them perfect but pretty good and it is grilling season so need to get her done.  I can update the results in a few months if anyone is interested and I will take a picture of the way they turned out.

They have been using the rust ultra for many a restore over there personally I was not happy with it could be me being a lousy spray painter.  But Jon has recently been trying the Krylon Paint which is more difficult to find but here is a link https://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/00264853.

I wanted to try it myself I knew about it but my local HD and Lowes did not carry it.

Mine looked fine until the cover laid on it. That's when the problem became evident. I will try contacting Rust-oleum and see what they say.

I had something similar happen when I refinished an original Weber wood handle.  I gave all three handles two coats of Helmsman spar varnish.  Let them dry for two days and then put them back on the kettle and covered it with a Weber cover.  Couple of days later I uncovered it and found the lid handle had the fabric impression in the varnish. The varnish did not turn sticky though. Maybe something to do with the sun heating the cover and somehow softening the paint?  Chemical reaction?

Yep that's exactly how it looks and went Jim. But this is supposed to be 800-1200 degree paint. I don't think it gets much hotter than 500 here in central FL in the summer lol. I have a feeling I'll be stripping it down to bare metal again.

Rub I still think it was an adhesion problem.  However you are in FL humidity is an issue both the Krylon and the Rustoleum if you try to spray it with more than 85% humidity its an issue as both recommend you don't do that so not sure that was the case when you sprayed it.

The ultra is good for 648 continuous yes it can take a spike to 1200 the Krylon is 600 take a spike to 1200 that is not an issue with the 1000's they generally get to 550 and change.  Its a can of worms when you take them down to bare metal which I just did by the way with the cup brush need to rub it down with acetone after using simple green or whatever to degrease it and you need to use more paint.  I have not used the Krylon before which I had seen it because that paint can be re-coated at anytime unlike the ultra.

I am new here you just stated that yours looked like Cells how do you view pictures in these threads I can rarely see them.

Rub, I just looked over my Jr that I had also refinished with the high heat ultra and found the same thing happening. But not where the cover would be touching it. I don't remember how hot or humid it was when I repainted it. Maybe the paint doesn't like to stick to smooth cast aluminum very well.

Yes that rust-o-lem branded high heat paint is no good... as you guys have found out it never truly hardens so every time it gets up to temp it becomes slightly tacky again.

Here at Home Depot in Canada they sell this one:

https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.high-heat-rust-paint---gloss-black-340g-aerosol.1000406051.html (https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.high-heat-rust-paint---gloss-black-340g-aerosol.1000406051.html)

oddly enough rust-o-lem also manufactures TREMCLAD, but I've had much better success with this one. Might be worth a try if you can find some down your way.

I finally got the Owner's Manual/Recipe book yesterday. It includes directions on assembly from the bottom up. I can see how that would have turned a lot of people off. I like this fold out picture of the grill. The wood they show is much lighter than I expected, I like the darker look better.
