Title: Heat deflector for CGA
Post by: Foster Dahlet on March 09, 2018, 03:50:06 AM
Has anyone here tried one of these?  What were the results?

I just ordered one on Amazon here (http://amzn.to/2FAbjwI)

Seems like a total game changer for the CGA

The video from Bestem USA / BBQube Inc. sold me.  Can't wait to try it out.  The video is more for the automated temp control system but the deflector is used.  I'll do a couple video reviews once it comes.

Jealous of the Aussies.  The risers seem like they would make the CGA a lot more versatile.  Surprised no one in the US manufactures them for sale.  Only thing I can think of is that the CGA seems to be more loved in Australia.  Much smaller following here in the US

Has anyone tried using a deflector from a gas GA and lining it with foil?

I considered doing this, but I worried about eroding the porcelain on the outer edges of my GGA flavorizer, speeding up its demise (they do not make them anymore).  Plus, the shape of flavorizer it is not the same as the deflector, and I wondered if that would mess with the heat distribution, as the charcoal is spread out across the bottom on the CGA, and the GGA has one burner tube, dead center.

Thanks to PBE Gummi Bear for the 20% off eBay alert, I picked up these CGA Craycorts for ~$44 with free shipping, and thanks again to Chiku for the CGA heat shield.  Will put them both to use tonight...

Let us know how the BBQube deflector works. I’m interested in one.

@Mr.CPHo

looks like a great way to enlarge the indirect grilling capability. Can't wait to hear the report!

I cooked 8 pieces of kettle fried chicken with the heat deflector.....chicken was directly on the grate (not in foil pan).

It definitely gives more real estate to the CGA.  Took 45 minutes to cook the chicken.  I ran the vents 1/2 open on the top and bottom for the entire cook.  If I had to do it over again, I'd run the grill a little hotter, because the chicken, while very tasty, needed to be a little crisper.  But, I am still learning my way around on the CGA and overall, I am pleased.  By the time my summer trip arrives, I will be improved.

@FTTH , actually, it improved the heat distribution, making it more even.....a big plus in that department.  I have struggled in past cooks with hot spots and had no issues tonight.

I liked it.

I won’t lie, it feels kind of flimsy, but generally works well as a heat deflector.  I really like the sloping sides into a drip pan, and because the heat deflector is sitting practicality on top of the charcoal, the drippings get that “flavorizer bar” sizzle action.  There is still some direct heat coming from below, but as Foster Dahlet mentioned, it’s more evenly distributed.

I made pork shoulder pieces and then chicken wings.

For $20 shipped can't really expect 3mm stainless. I wonder if it would make sense to cover in foil to aid in cleanup.

Mine is supposed to be delivered today. I plan to smoke a 4 lb corned beef brisket. They're super cheap and delicious.

What Grate temps are you guys getting with all vents half open? If I was looking to cook between 250-275 how would you set the vents and how many lit coals would you start with?

Not sure.  I didn't run a thermometer on that KFC cook.  I ran vents 1/2 open all the way around....

But I would run one bottom vent completely closed and the other bottom vent open for your cook.....same with the top....or both vents 1/2 open up top. And dial in your temps from there.  I'd probably start with about 5 lit briquettes or so and let it burn starting from the side opposite of the drip opening....as you saw in that video.

I'll tell you what....the thing is a charcoal miser....I had a remarkable amount of charcoal left after the KFC cook, having used nothing more than the little chimney of fully lit charcoal in there.
