I'm starting this thread to document what will be a fun project I'll be working on little by little over time.
I found this battered and beat kettle earlier this spring and I'm gonna start getting into it this offseason.
Stay tuned for updates and specific details about the condition as the rehab moves along to get this one back into the lineup.

Awesome find, Jeff! This tells me that there has to be dozens more of these yellows hiding under black paint. You have to wonder, was it embarrassing to own a yellow grill at one time?

Because a can of black BBQ paint is cheaper than a new grill. And the only high temp color that used to be available from a rattle can was black.

So a few more details to show before I get started.
As you can see, the lid has a pretty good sized chip in the lid.
Next, all the bottom vent dampers are gone, so what the former owners did was drill a hole in the bottom of the bowl, install the hardware for a One Touch sweeper system (without the sweeps), place the original ash pan inside the base of the bowl, drill a hole in the center to pass the One Touch hardware through to secure the pan, and lastly...drill holes through the pan - through the original vent holes to allow it to breath. Genius! Now there is a hole in the base of the bowl, and holes in the original ash pan.
I've also notice some chipping and crazing in areas of the bowl. Lastly, the former owner sprayed the legs black to match the kettle...naturally!!
Half of the top handle remains...but that's not a big deal of course.
My goal is to get this kettle to a grill fella, and back into the cooking fleet.

Ok, so put a little time in today. This black paint is on pretty good. Steel wool was painfully slow, paint thinner didn't cut it, but I was slow and very careful with a razor. Followed that up with steel wool and Dawn to finish small spots and shine it. Not too bad so far...but there are bad areas missing porcelain coming on the other half. Too be continued...

@kettlebb. Notice the big chip on the other side of the lid that will be coming to light soon. Sad. It looks OK aside from that.

Oh my god! That vent/ash pan system is genius!
I've been trying to figure out a system for converting three wheelers to one touch for a while, this is great.
It doesn't seem like it would handle the ash, which is really the biggest glory of the one touch system, but damn, the original owner was really on to something.
This is gonna be a great thread!

That one touch ash pan idea is very creative. Yellow looks nice so far. Are you going to use yellow paint on the large chip?

@hoosierkettle. I don't think I'm going to do anything with the chips. Clean them up best I can, maybe hit me with be some high temp black. We'll see. If I painted it with yellow, it wouldn't hold up to the heat over time, and the yellow touched areas wouldn't match with the color change either. The chipped areas will be for the grill's new owner to decide! :)

Its gota be alot of work scraping all that paint off.
Have you considered using paint stripper or lacquer thinner to soften it, but not necessarily remove the paint?

Tried paint thinner...that didn't do much. Is lacquer thinner more effective? Paint stripper can be sloppy...I'm patient to take my time with other methods if need be. Gonna be putting a little time into it the next couple days

Lacquer thinner is very stong...gloves, glasses and lots of fresh air strong.
Try wetting a rag with it and let it sit on the paint for a few. If it evaporates too quick cover the rag with plastic wrap.

I'll take a look in my basement. I think I still have some stuff I used to easily strip off some spray paint from where someone painted over one of those old porcelain black on yellow Chicago street signs.
It came in a trigger spray bottle for easy application and the paint came off VERY easily & didn't have nasty fumes. It might work for your high heat paint on porcelain . If I don't still have a bottle, I'm pretty certain I have a bottle of something else by the same manufacturer, so I can figure it out. I think I got it at Menards, but have seen it elsewhere too. In a worse case scenario, I'll peruse Menard's website and can probably figure it out from there.
When I sprayed it on, I basically put a cloth or maybe paper towels over it & let that get damp too to hold the dampness onto the paint for a bit. It basically bubbled up & I used a plastic scraper to get it off very easily.

I'm pretty certain I've seen it at either Lowes or Home Depot too.
It also comes in a smaller container for less than $5 at Menards.
As I said, I don't know if it works as good for high heat paint, but it stripped off spray paint over porcelain VERY, VERY, VERY easily and wasn't nasty smelling like some other things.
I might also have a suggestion to EASILY clean the aluminum legs (some stuff I bought at NAPA, also in a spray bottle) after trying to figure out how to clean a nasty looking 10 ft aluminum ladder I got for a song. (Let me know if you want the name of the stuff. I'll probably try it out on an aluminum leg I have here & then post the results in another thread).

For what it is worth, it didn't harm the nice shiny finish on the porcelain 1950's street sign that I used it on.

So I took a little time off working on this kettle for the Thanksgiving weekend. I got back into it tonight for a little bit.
@potsieweber. Hey Hal, tried that graffiti remover. It didn't do as well as I hoped. This black paint is really stubborn and has many layers. Someone really hated the yellow!! It helped to take off each layer of black paint, but not the immediate one underneath. As I got down into the last layers of black, the orange peel texture was another issue. All the black paint wanted to stay in the "low spots". This is when I used the graffiti remover, along with steel wool to remove the final remnants of the black.
@hellfiregrill. I think I'm gonna give your idea of lacquer thinner a try on the bowl. The lid took longer than I wanted.
I put another hour into the second half of the lid for a total of 2 hours. It's too bad about the large porcelain chip in the lid, but overall it's not too bad. There will be a different handle in this lids future.
Also removed was the ridiculous One Touch contraption along with the ruined original ash pan inside the bowl that was drilled out so the kettle could breathe. I ordered some replacement bowl dampers to replace all 3 that were missing. Cost of dampers...14.00.

Personally I like the Rust, Rot & Retrofit but that paints gotta go....

Wow Jeff, that thing is looking amazing. I'm not totally surprised, but I would like to know what paint the previous owner used to make it black. We all tell people "DO NOT PAINT YOUR KETTLE, IT WILL NOT LAST", but it looks like someone out there figured it out! I can't wait to see what it looks like when it's done!

Don't know what paint it was. It's a flat black with many layers. If you look at the original photo before I started l, it was thin in spots around the top of the lid. Also, the orange peel texture is holding the paint pretty good too. It's not completely smooth

I wonder if the paint is Stove Paint. It's usually flat black. My dad painted some rust spots on my old redhead a long time ago and that stuff was a PITA to get off.

Great job! My yellow (my first colored grill and the one that started it all for me) was found at the curb on trash night - painted black. I initially grabbed it because of the 3 daisy wheels on the bowl - my only other experience with Webers at the time was my WSM. I knew if I could control temps with the three wheels on the WSM, I could do the same on a kettle. I noticed a little yellow underneath the black but didn’t know what I had until probably a year later when @Bob BQ saw it and tried trading me a couple of grills for it. Been a little while since I updated this and had time to work on it.
So after spending about an hour and a half on the bowl, I uncovered what I knew what be some fairly significant heat damage. It was more than I could see under the black paint. This bowl is probably one of the more extreme examples of overheating and overall abuse. One of the main positive things is that the leg sockets are very strong.
I did try lacquer thinner...and it was helpful with removing the paint, but the fumes were too strong and in my garage and with a natural gas heater in there, I didn't want to risk any type of ignition. With all the chips and crazing, the cleanup is extremely challenging. Here are some pics of today's progress.

Wonder if the wheels are original... they're in way too nice shape compared to the grill.

Total hours into the grill are 3.5. Wheels appear to be original. This is mostly likely one of the last years of the yellow kettles produced with this style wheel.
They white walls were fairly dirty, but after clean-up, turned out like new. Very little dry rot if any on the white walls

Advisory...for those that are squeemish or easily horrified, please turn away and do not scroll down.
For the rest of you...don't worry. I haven't "detailed" the bowl yet. It'll all buff out...

Hey guys, another update. Another 1.5 hours into it. Cleaned the inside of the bowl, along with some additional hardcore cleaning on the rust on the bowl exterior. I'm starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel. I've showing some before and after pics...hopefully you can see a little difference on the exterior.

That’s coming along nicely! Jeff was it you that mentioned sometime back to use Ceramabrite to reduce/eliminate the rust/craze marks on the bowl? I did that with my lime 22 and it cleaned up the craze marks beautifully. Looking forward to the finished product.

I think it was worth the effort. But, I was only watching the thread. That said, seeing how it looks in the end (compared to the beginning) is part of the fun, so the effort isn't wasted.

ok guys...time for an update. Been about 2 weeks since the last.
When I left off...I had finished cleaning up the rust stains as good as I could by using Cerama Bryte and steel wool. I did make the bowl appear cleaner.
So here is where I was at then. I wanted to make this grill visually better, but not do a complete touchup with yellow paint. My goals isn't to make this grill something it really isn't. Let's face it. This grill was "beat'. What I wanted to was make the chips on the bowl less horrifying...but still protect the bare areas from getting worse. I chose to spray all the chipped areas with a 2000 degree header primer. Sort of a gray color. I think the result is visually...easier to look at, and less eye catching than the black chips against the yellow finish, and hopefully protected.
Next...plug the hole from the homemade, home drilled OT hardware addition. I used some stainless hardware and washers, along with a stainless acorn nut. Fancy? No, but functional and problem solved.
Next...add 3 daisy wheels from my parts stash. Looking better yet.
Add polished legs, power washed original wheels, and economy triangle (more parts stash). The original triangle was too far gone and rusted to justify the time and effort for what the end result would be. For those of you that have really got into a bad triangle...you know all about this.
2 more hours time invested for a total of 9.0

Last one guys.
First...full disclosure. The grill had some rim rash that was typical of a grill that had been abused. I hit the chips with the same 2000 degree primer. I followed that up with a high temp yellow. The match was pretty good. As I said, I didn't want to hide what this grill really is, so the rim is the only "touched up" area with yellow. I figured the worst that can happen is eventually the original chips start to show back up. But time will tell.
Finished by cleaning up the top vent, and adding one of Brian's awesome handles. I think the grill has come a along way, and turned out a little better than I thought.

This needs to be a front page story when you have time @Jeff I applaud your vision, patience and elbow grease. Not sure I've seen a more thorough description of a Restore than this. Not all museum pieces are NIB. This beauty belongs in the same lineup as any of the amazing kettles in your collection.

Be careful with leaving it in primer. I'm far from a painter, but my understanding is that primer will absorb moister (hence making paint adhere) and could cause additional rust. If it's going to live inside you're probable fine, but it might be problematic for an outdoor grill.
