Title: Friday evening suds
Post by: robs2 on November 03, 2017, 02:15:04 PM
Me and my neighborhood buds often get accused of being the epicenter of Charlotte's IPA scene (drinking, not brewing). In the last week, our brews of choice have been:
Pliney Blind Pig
3 Floyds Zombie Dust (3 days old)
The Alchemist Skadoosh & Heady Topper
A couple Surley's
Westbrook Citrus Redacted
Brew Gentlemen's General Braddock
.... and now I'm having NC's very best single IPA - Burial Hawkbill
(There's a ham on the grill back there somewhere)
... but this is a post about another "food".

For you guys that enjoy a fine brew, what are your favorites?  Secret Santa is coming up and this might be a good thread for ideas.

Its hard to go wrong with anything  3 Floyds - love some Zombie Dust and Gumbballhead. I also enjoy Bells, Founders, and Lagunitas. Never tried Alchemist or pliny the elder, but really want to.

Agreed @julweidn. Pliney The Elder gets the nod on most "rankings" but a lot of the true IPA guys I know (self included) prefer the Pig.

Had a Laganitus Born Yesterday on Monday.  Love this fresh-hopped beers!

Ive never had a beer from Russian River - definitely on my list. I dont think you can get it in Indiana.

Had 2015 Dark Lord last year, it was incredible. Im usually not a fan of that style.

RR is only available in CA, OR, CO and (oddly) PA. Hard to find even in those states.

Hey, long time Beer Advocate member and IPA fan here.

@Robs2...Even better than Sip of Sunshine is Double Sunshine. Lawson’s makes great stuff! However, sounds like you’re drinking some primo beers already!

As for Russian River...I’m not really a fan of Blind Pig. I mean...it’s ok, but every time I go to RR, I always grab a pint or two of Row 2 Hill 56 (I enjoy it more than a Pliny).

Currently enjoying the Sierra Nevada Fresh Hop 12 pack this weekend. Highly recommend it.

Cheers!

@mike - noted... expect the double to be primo and will place it above the Sip on my list!

Was in Temecula a few weeks ago and had a Row 2 Hill 56 for the first time ( love the simplicity of the story behind the name).  Great beer. But I prefer the [emoji200]!

Today, I went to a recently opened Brewery here in Charlotte opened by Chris Tropeano - former Russian River brewer- and it was really good. Looking forward to seeing him develop. Definitely not perfect yet but I believe he has the foundation for what could become great.... the scene is amazing.

Some really great east coast stuff here in NC that is as good as anything I've had. Have several CA beers I'm interested in. Would love to get into some trades!

@TheKevman how'd you like this past year's Hopslam?  I thought it was mediocre at best. That beer used to be really good but I think in this day of superior Brewing, they have been passed up. You agree?

If there's any of you guys that are serious about your IPAs and would like to sample some goodies from NC - one of the best craft scenes on the right coast -  let me know and I'll get some good stuff in your hands!

Nothing like a perfect brew when doing a cook on a classic kettle!

I too prefer Pig over Pliny (always have). Unfortunately we don't get Pig bottles in San Diego anymore, but Toronado has it on draft regularly.
@jason & I are both huge Ponto fans, from Pizza Port. Usually my go-to grilling can.
As I mentioned once before, I work for Rip Current Brewing in San Diego. We just tapped our Triple IPA "Caught in a Rip". It gives Pliny the Younger a run for its money, IMHO.

@selfservebrewer Have you been to Regal Beagle in SD?  My company is based in SoCal and the last 3 times I've been to SD, they've had the Pig on draft.

I'd love to try your IIIPA.

We are lucky to have to good options near me.  RAR and Burley Oak both make some great NEIPA type beers from the nano sector.  We have a couple good micro breweries as well such as Union and Flying Dog.  We also have the Veil down in Richmond which is amazeballs and to the North, we have Trillium and Treehouse, plus the VT options you've already seen in this thread.  Good IPAs abound nowadays which is great.  I've been lucky enough to keep my fridge full of limited release beers this year, but I'm always looking for a sleeper shelfie beer that's underrated and easy to get.  For those options, I always like Dale's, almost anything Lagunitas or even Long Trail Green Blaze is a great sleeper beer.  Currently, Born Yesterday (Lagunitas) is the best wide distro IPA you can get your hands on in my opinion.

BTW, I've had a few Burial beers.  Good brewery.  None of those I sampled knocked me silly, but they were all solid.

Also, Russian River Blind Pig is such a rare treat.  I think that one's crazy heavy on Amarillo and has a bit of an apricot aroma.  Amazing beer.

Today I had a Lazer Snake and a Half Acre DIPA (Deep Space?).

@robs2  have you tried any of the brews from Legal Remedy (Rock Hill) yet?    I'm more of a porter/stout guy but my IPA drinking friends enjoyed the Justice Juice from them.   And their World Court Mocha Blond Stout is a must try if you haven't had it yet.

I dink A LOT of craft beer, but not a fan of hoppy stuff. I'm local to Mothers, so i drink a lot of their stuff. Sipping an Oktoberfest, as we speak. I love stouts. Especially if they sit in a barrel for a while. Can get on board with sours, trippels, quads, barley wines... For the most part keep my IBU low and my ABV up, and I'm happy. So far my favorite of all is MILF by Mothers. It's an imperial stout aged in 4 different kinds of barrels, for almost and year and then blended. Holy complex Batman. I might be up for a trade, but I have expensive taste and shipping beer is already expensive. I would also have to shop blindly for you, since i can't stand hoppy beers.

Hey @schaefd2, will definitely add you on untapped. This is going to be tough, but I'm going to take a 45 day "breather".  Injured my shoulder swinging a fungo bat and suspected a cuff tear.... doc called me today and confirmed that's the case so I'm going to have to have it repaired. Will take some "high health" time to prep for surgery (no drinking) but I'll be back!

Columbus Brewing Co IPA
Brew Kettle White Raja
Head Hunter Hop Stalker (if there in the fall fresh hop season)
Head Hunter Hop Juju (if there in the spring for this seasonal)
Head Hunter IPA if there any other time

And last...and MOST

Any juice bomb by Hoof Hearted. My personal favorite was the Musk of the Minotaur batch they did in Feb '17, but they have several beers rated higher than that (Konkey Dong, Roller Blabe, South of Eleven DIPA).

If you ever get to OH and haven't tried any of these, seek them out.

I went there when they first opened several years ago. I haven't been to their new location yet.

Rumor has it a few breweries looked at the old blind pig location, but it was in such terrible shape they all passed.

Owner of oaken barrel also bought that entire strip, so it will be cool to see what he dies with it.

I second @robs2  opinion. I live in Columbus (Delaware to be exact but whatevs). All these are fantastic beers! I highly suggest adding fresh Mystic Mama from Jackie-Os to this list. Also, (and I don’t know how it has been missed) but you NEED to pick up some fresh Bodhi from Columbus Brewing. If you like all those beers you listed, you’re missing out if you haven’t had Bodhi. Widely regarded as Columbus’s best and it is always in the conversation of Ohio’s best beer. Not best IPA (it’s a DIPA) but Best Overall beer.

My brother lives in Columbus.  Every trip there includes at least:

Two terrible misses on my part not calling out the Jackie O's or the Bodhi. I generally try to stay away from the imperials as much as I can (unless it's a Hoof Hearted), thus the Bodhi oversight. From Athens, I like the Mystic Mama ok but I really like the Mandala series. Very piney... love it. I'm definitely a hophead, but I do like a good stout and man.... Jackie O's kills the stouts!!

@robs2 Glad to know you’ve had both of them! I usually skip on the imperials as well (too big) but Bodhi is an exception. I love Dark Apparition and Oil of Aphrodite (and their Bourbon barrel versions). Sounds like you’d be a great drinking buddy hahaha but damn Mandalas are expensive. Only reason I haven’t tried them.

Pick up some Good Vibes from Voodoo. They’re from Meadville Pa (where my in laws are from) and they just started distributing to Cbus. If you can find it, try some.

LOL I’d welcome it! Because outside of Good Vibes, and a couple others from Voodoo, I have had nothing but mediocre beer from Northwest PA. if there’s something I’m missing out there, please let me know. I’m headed to Clarion to Friday.

My 2 favorite PA breweries are Brew Gentlemen in Pittsburgh and Tired Hands near Philly (Ardmore maybe?). Brew Gents General Braddock is my favorite. My "other brother", also a hophead with a proper pallet, thinks Tired Hands Alien Church is about the best beer he's ever had (He rated it higher than a fresh Younger he had in Santa Rosa in fact... for what that's worth).  I'm not sure you'll find Brew Gents outside of Pittsburgh but I know Tired Hands is available in NYC so I would think you might find it in NW PA.

Maybe the ones who beer trade and ship beer across the nation. I used to be that way. Now, I just walk in to the store and pick from what’s available. It’s much more enjoyable that way. [emoji23]

When I moved to a small town this year my choices became very limited. I can actually get very good IPAs and a few others here, but they are the same beers all the time.

I figured I was "doing it wrong," because I was never as contented as the joe six-packs who were happy with their same choice eery week. I wanted to try everything within my reach. I traveled. I spent. And now I'm spent.

I often felt as if I was buying the label, and worse, that I *should* be drinking a nice beer when I didn't necessarily want it. Time to stop, not just slow down. It's not that I don't appreciate better beer, trust me I do, but as a hobby I couldn't sustain it on several levels. I learned I'd rather go without than drink something that was merely very good but not great. Pathetic, I know!

I got the flu or something similar a little over a month ago and wanted no booze. Haven't had, nor wanted, any beer since. I had been looking for a way out. I still drink everything else, but it's refreshing to not treat booze like water. For ME.

But if you draw my name from a hat, heck yeah send me something good!

Northwest PA beers!  Voodoo has the classic Winona's Big Brown Ale as well.  There is a place in Venango (near Meadville) Called Sprague's Farm and Brewworks.  Great beer, but as far as I know they don't bottle.  There is also North Country Brewing in Slippery Rock. They do can, but it don't like it as much as the draft.

Im right there with ya @addicted-to-smoke! Except I’m in Columbus where I have near infinite choices - and I STILL shipped beer to get the famous or rare stuff. I couldn’t walk into a beer store without dropping $50. It was getting bad. I hit a wall one day (that’s another story) and thank God I hit that wall because drinking beer was enjoyable after that. I took a break from crafty stuff and only drank my namesake beer (Schaefer Beer 30 pack for $17!) Thanks to my wife’s encouragement, I learned to just pick from whatever is available when I go. To consider a craft beer as a treat and be thankful for what i have to choose from.
Turns out there are so many great beers out there that you’ll miss if you spend hours researching it!

I just remembered another good Cbus Brewery... Seventh Son I think?  I didn't think they were nearly as good as HH overall, but they had an IPA that was money. Will have to ask my brother what it was called.

Seventh Son won best of Cbus a couple years ago. You may be thinking of their two flagship beers, Strong Ale (red tall boy can) and Humulus Nimbus Super Pale (blue tall boy). Maybe Proliferous? That’s a great one too. They have several though.

I’ve had a few from Hoof Hearted (South of Eleven and Musk of Minotaur) and I’ve been underwhelmed to be honest. However, I like very hop forward beers. And I think HH balances theirs with malt very well, which ends up disappointing me. Maybe my palate isn’t refined enough. I want to try Konkey Dong though, but mostly for their label lol I Love Donkey Kong.

@robs2 Sorry I can be chatty lol what part of town if your bro located? You guys need to check out Barley Hopsters in Delaware. That’s my favorite place. They have a wall of coolers to make your own sixers, but they let you set up a tab and drink them in store and they’re only $2-4 each!! You can even bring your dog in for a drink! It’s an awesome place. Thurman’s is right next door too.

Just checked with my bro and got clarification. Every Thursday, they now get a large quantity ("boxes and boxes stacked on top of each other").  Said he's been there 6-7 times on Thursdays over the last 3-4 mos and it's been like that every single time. I'm sure they sell out before the next week and maybe even after a few days, but they get a lot and if you go on a Thursday, they'll have it.

Sorry... should have clarified that before my "100% of the time" post.
