Title: Mod Month!
Post by: 56MPG on October 01, 2017, 02:10:21 AM
I declare Mod Month has begun! If we were still doing it, it would start today and run through Halloween. Perfect time to finish up all those mods you've been meaning to complete before Winter. 2017 was a great year for mods. My only real mod this year (he says while muttering the Mod Month Motto: "Wait 'till next year")  was this:

With over 7,000 views to date, it's proof that even small mods can inspire many more.

Let's see what you've been up to!

Best thing about your bigger better basket is its quick, easy, free if you have baskets and hardware, and very useful. I use it at least a couple times a week. Fantastic for searing and cooking. Also is great to put under a griddle. Just a handy accessory.

Thanks Marty, great poster this year.

Wrapping up unfinished projects this month would be a great way to celebrate the anniversary of Mod Month.
Although we aren't actually doing Mod Month, I do have a few special handles available. I'll give a special WKC handle to my 3 favorite mods.

All mods posted in 2017 are elgible. I'll pick winners Nov 1.
Halloween Costume mods are TOTALLY INCLUDED.

I have had an idea that I haven't seen yet. Maybe the deadline will be the inspiration I need to see it through.

EVERYTHING qualifies! A mod can be a complete frankenstein or a simple fix to a nagging issue. Even incomplete ideas are welcome - everything you do can inspire others to take it further. Share your fails. Share your successes. Dig deep in your boneyard and ask yourself: "I wonder if I could use this for...?"

Remember, it's not a competition - it's a lifestyle.

Since March 2016 I have been using my 22in.  3 wheeler on top of my 18.5 as a smoker. It shows in the image beneath my name and was previously described in the thread here. http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/stacked-kettles-excellent-smoker/msg314316/#msg314316
Others have written about the same idea but apparently my first use pre-dates those others according to our member Greenweb.

I think the idea is worth of consideration because: 1) it works great 2) it costs nothing if you already own two kettles of the designated size 3) It does not result in permanent modification; both kettles can easily be re-used in original configuration as originally intended 4) it uses 100% all Weber parts. 5) demonstrates the versatility of kettle cooking, ranging from direct heat grilling, to indirect heat grilling, to true smoking all with the same kettle(s)

I’m not much of a crazy off the deep end mod freak so this might be my only mod, so here we go.
Fasten you seat belts low and slow and don’t stand up in the ride until it comes to a complete stop.
As some of you may have seen before I have a new style JJ that I use quite a lot and because I’m selling my house and down sizing I wanted to do everything I can do with my Smoke Gray MT on my JJ.
I also wanted to use mostly Weber items to mod it.

Matt I don't recall reading how or what you made the rotisserie ring from? I also want to know what size food service/water pan that is and if you needed anything special to trim it. And is that cover actually made the JJ or another grill?

P.S. Show that GBS grate around here just one more time and some of us will launch a revolt.

The lid on the grill is a late model 18” Euro Premium with the factory thermometer. I did not want to cut the lid to place the thermometer, and I added the vent handle to the vent first and then drilled the rivet out of the premium lid to swap vents. To keep my serial #
The roti ring I got in my last buy..

another 18” premium that some one used a Weber 22” rotisserie kit with. The old owner just cut the ring down the weld seam and over lapped the ends and shot some screws in it. It was ugly and did not fit good so I cut the over lap off and re-engineered it to fit better. I then made a new spit rod out of 5/16 SS and ground the 2 notches in it in the correct places.
The drip pan is a 1/3 size at 65mm deep. Trimmed (small grinder) the corners and then took about 1/8 off the long back to give it a little wiggle room.

There’s no separate thread for this grill. We’re not quite finished with handles/wheels etc. yet. I raised a 26, my second such endeavor. Total increase is maybe 4-5 inches.

Goals additionally included:

1) Some (very) minor strengthening of the front leg so that it wouldn’t so quickly get loose in the socket and cause a forward tilt … as 26ers like to do.

2) Bent front leg with wheel, for foot clearance while walking around the grill and easy shuttling on the porch.

I bought some of these shower rods, https://www.homedepot.com/p/Glacier-Bay-60-in-Aluminum-Builders-Shower-Rod-in-Chrome-HD14016/205699635?MERCH=REC-_-rv_nav_plp_rr-_-NA-_-205699635-_-N and begun cutting the rears. I want to say the rear legs are 25” and of course you just smash the ends with a hammer where the (new) axle goes through.

I crudely bent the front leg around a burn barrel with the help of a C-clamp. I partially filled it with Great Stuff but still managed to kink it. "Thanks, Internet!" Those of you with the proper tools and/or patience to fill with sand or whatever could SELL bent tubes to this forum, just sayin’!

I bought 1” furniture/caster sockets from Ace just like these: https://www.amazon.com/Shepherd-Hardware-9073-Plastic-Furniture/dp/B000XZI1W6 After tapping the sockets in, and the caster wheel, I began cutting the bent leg to fit so that when assembled, the kettle would be level.

The triangle was initially a mystery. I settled on a location that made sense to meet the front leg and then matched that up at the rear. The rear of the triangle doesn’t go all the way through the legs, but of course you could do it for more strength.

The front of the triangle has an almost “full loop” to the end, which isn’t seen when installed on a stock 26er’s front leg (because of the angle of the leg.) I took advantage of that by drilling two small holes, only large enough to let the wire pass through, thereby supporting the triangle there with two tight holes (oh my!) in the hopes that the hole(s) wouldn’t so quickly get rounded out over time (I hate when that happens.) Less wiggle here also means less wiggle at the socket end, I hope.

It's a mild but usable lift. This first image doesn't adequately reveal that it's now higher than the Performers behind it.

The strongest way to stabilize a 26 is to physically lock the front leg to the rears with another tube, located horizontally. The legs should never develop a wobble. I did that for the one I made for chuck_s with the help of two leftover star nuts from a SSP fix. You can also see I made his a lot taller!
