Title: Do you cover your grill?
Post by: Josh G on August 15, 2017, 05:55:02 AM
I have heard both sides.  So do you cover or just leave it out?

uncovered.  I found that when the cover starts to deteriorate and moisture starts to get through it  the cover then acts like a sponge that just holds the moisture against the kettle for a longer time. At least that is true for covers that I received

Usually the performer and another kettle uncovered on a covered patio
The rest are stored in the basement uncovered when not in use

For 8 years my primary cooker (18" OT) sat outside covered with Weber gray cover, now that I have my MT it sits warm and cozy under a Weber black cover safely in the garage. And my JJ & SJ sit also in the garage on top of the refrigerator .
Maybe I'm paranoid in my old age but I don't trust anyone anymore to leave a grill outside.

Most times I forget to cover my main cooker, the OTG.
My WSM stays covered outside but will be moving into the garage soon, thinking I am going to get the Cajun Bandit wheel kit so it will be really easy to move it in and out. It's not used very often.
My genesis never gets covered. No real reason.
All of my other grills are in the garage uncovered.

How are you supposed to build that beautiful patina babying it with covers and putting them indoors?  I have had several 22.5 AllBlacks and never put them in any cover.  But then again, I like things lookin a little ugly or rough. [emoji817]

I don't know if the thieves were very opportunistic or if they were watching his cook, but he was almost done and had gone back inside to get his pans.  My dad(a policeman) heard him in the yard cussing, grabbed his service pistol and went outside...the thieves had stolen the grate and all of the meat, which was 3-4 slabs of ribs.

Most of my grills have zav wood on them. None are standard oak replicas. Gotta keep the sun off of them, so I cover. The exceptions are my Target copper and Wood Dale 26". I stuck with the exclusive handles on the copper, and he can't do anything to the Woody.

I keep them in garage at this point as we don't have a fenced in yard yet due to a  new subdivision. Once I build another outdoor kitchen I will then keep them outside and likely covered. I also always clear coat the kettle triangle racks and bottom racks on my performer to help prevent rust from appearing where the grates are welded.

Used to cover meticously...
Im over it and all get a nice suntan all year round.

All hardware.on all kettles and wsms are upgraded with 316 ss and ss grates. (Except for 14 wsm grates...anyone have a link for 14 wsm ss grates?)

The ss cb bandit roti ring sits on a performer....the reason to buy the cb ring rather than weber ring.

Every thing I own is kept covered when not in use.  Got tired if the cheap covers you buy.  Purchased some Weathermax 80 fabric and made one for everything.  10 year fabric warranty and does not shrink.

I remember reading good things here about this cover so I pulled the trigger and it came today. Seems heavy duty and I like the drawstring and clips at the bottom. Do they make one of these that fits an 18?

Here in Eugene I usually keep my girls covered, on my open deck, year round.  During the non-rainy days, I allow my Perf to catch the sun along with my support kettle (which ever that one is for the day/week/month).

@MacEggs   Several of your photos should be submitted to the calendar photo search.  I especially like the snowball raspberry :)

Uncovered for over 15 years, outside on the deck, no roof, nada. I lived in the Chicagoland area and currently live in central IL.  I have a Genny with the side burner, an SSP with gas assist (gas assist not currently working) and a 18 WSM.  Other than some rust through the base of the WSM they're all in good shape.  Oh and the rails that hold the drip pan on the Genny rusted through and we had to drill out the screws and replace them. Mine are cookers, not lookers but this year for the first time I dragged them out to the lawn and gave them a bit of a scrub. These were my ex's grills and he never covered them. I've done a bit of spiffing and replacing parts this year so I'm thinking of covering them this winter, although I do grill year round.

Frankly, it's s testament to how well these pups are made that the only rust through has been in the WSM  (bottom bowl from accumulated water siting in it) and I recently fixed that with a touch of high heat silicone. I've replaced parts here and there but nothing too extreme.

Everything outside is covered. The wood handles on the fire pit split lengthwise over this past winter/spring, so I make sure to let all the wood handled stuff breathe occasionally. I need more covers for the stuff in the garage because they get real dusty/dirty if left naked. Most are covered by tarps now.

I've been fortunate enough to have either a covered gazebo or a covered deck and consider that ideal for working grills.

-- My grills are old and do not shut down the charcoal very well. They stay warm, or even hot, for quite a while. Don't want to melt a cover. I'm assuming those of you without gazebos or covered decks or carports or garage space wait until the next day before placing covers back on?

-- Anything with a wood handle that you care about, or paid good money for, needs to be covered in my opinion. It will get destroyed by rain, if not sun.

Uncovered, garage kept. If I could keep them outside, I would, but I live in Chicago where a neighbor once had the meat stolen off his grill....as it was cooking!
What?! Who does that?! If  the thief was that hungry, I bet any grillfella woulda shared a meal with him once it finished cooking! Geez!

Negative. Those covers always flew off anyway. I do store them in my shed though, but my regular grill just sits out year round.
That's nice to have a shed. I'll have one hopefully one day. I think the new Weber covers have a strap that prevents them from flying away though.
Yes, it is nice to have a shed, butt unfortunately, my kettles are outside of it. The shed is occupied with tools and other things. Yes, the new covers do have straps to keep them in place.
My old neighbor had a cover with a strap, and, in our experience, those were worse. The wind would pick up not just the cover, but knock over the grill as well! Fun times!!

thought of that. In my experience, the covers turned into parachutes and knocked the grills over.
