I just picked up a copy of a 1956 Better Homes & Garden Barbecue Book. It has many photos of non covered grills. The only picture I found of a Weber Kettle was this one. it's a Chestnut Coppertone with the bottom solid triangle pan.
So they do exist.

I have some pictures of George Stephen doing some cooks on a Chestnut Copper tone very similar to this from the 1950s I have also done a couple of full meal cooks on the kettle it's a lot of fun to do definitely have to manage the timing very very tightly but I'll dig around and see if I can find the pictures I used to have of me doing for meals on the kettle
