I have a 1991 that's more of a silver color. I know that did make a true grey that's older than mine

Your welcome. I really like the grays. I wish they would make gray or at least a gray green or blue.
-
Yeah, that's a fade black.....
this is a close up of "Bob" my main smoker ~~~~>

His top is evenly faded all across like this....I think it's kinda neat........metal side handle, just like yours........
-
Do you have picture of it ? Please
I'll try and get a picture of it. It's still sitting in a box, in my shed.....I really have no space. :(

I rehabbed a 'G' and an 'N' last year for two friends. Here is a photo of the 'G' (I modded that ash can on there, and later put some Brian O'Neal (Zavod) handles on it to replace these horrible painted ones).

It's a 2006 SJG.

That '85 G looks sharp with that silver can blending with the grey fade. 8) Good fit!
-
I've got the kettle that came with my Seville/cart. Unfortunately, it's completely rusted out, and I had to replace it with a black OTS.

Thanks for the picture , it's as I suspected what threw me off was the whole thing is that color , I would have thought that only the top would fade . Maybe someone used some chemical to clean it that ruined the finish or built a camp fire in it . Oh well it's still a B and I'm happy
-
Thanks, Craig! Yeah, I was sad to see that one go. But my friend loves it and cooks on it all of the time. Rehabbing kettles for friends is a nice way to feed the addiction without filling up the yard. ;-)
And Hawk, the gray vs. faded black debate is one that comes up regularly around here. I decided this kettle was a true gray because it had the same color consistently all over the lid and bowl, and even under the rim of the bowl. But there are a lot of blacks that look quite gray. In any case, a B is a nice catch, and your whole collection is gorgeous. Congrats.

I have two greys, one from the early 60's and the other is an 80's? i think? I will try to post pictures when i get home.

I thought my 77' 18 was grey. Duke and/or others have said it is a faded black. If it is faded, I would think the lid and bowl would not match since the bowl is somewhat shaded. I guess if it was on a conrete patio, the sun would reflect on the bowl and also fade it .
-
Golly your grill looks baby blue so did the other one the perry posted ? Am I seeing wrong or am I going blind lol
-
Who is it that's got that beautiful old grey fade, the Plainsman or something like that, can't rember the name of that color.

Heres the link to the gorgeous late 50s-early 60s Wood Dale era grey fade owned by member With A K

The picture does make it look like it has a blue tint but its pretty much just light grey in person.

Ethel, is really nice...A fade black, but very nice....

My recollection is that this one was black when I got it.

I have a faded black like Ethel, but even more faded. It does have those white spots. What amazes me is how uniform the fade is. I will post once it is cleaned. Damned winter will not go away...

This black kettle was incredibly faded gray, then I sprayed it down with armor all...and it turned the original jet black color..

Here is the original bowl close up to see the speckle look...

Maybe we should start calling them "Silvers". I think that's what weber called Grandpa's original color. Besides they might appreciate it more than faded black. These are their silver years. :)

Amen, I'm living the silver years in age, but no in heart...

Three questions :
WTF ? Did that armor All trick last for more than 10 minutes ?
Is that a router on Mesa Azul?
-
Technically you only asked two questions.....Not sure if WTF? passes for a question.....So question one.. yes still black today....worked awesome.....I might have sprayed pam as well.
Question two..Router where? From left to right on top of Mesa Azul as follows; one charcoal starter full of charcoal in #3, small speaker, Motorola Razr Maxx on a charger base, one thick rubber glove, one pitt mitt, and the Pizza oven on #2. On the bottom left to right, two sets of wire baskets stacked up, Propane bottle attached to igniter on #2, stack of four fire bricks, and my metal box full of gloves and wood chunks......
Did you guys notice the blue fade on my performer? Very slight but a fade for sure.....

Damn, bet that grill has some stories to tell! I like it.
-
Actually Grandpa is a silver from 62'. He was at least when he was a young buck and thought he could take on the world. Now he's looking gray and patina in his old age. :)
-
I love the patina on this grill, Brian. I also like how shiny the vent is. Nice contrast with the rest of the Kettle.

I polished up the vent, it was crusted and black, and I really wanted to see the Wood Dale real clear so I had to shine it up....
-
Funny thing, anyone who sees Grandpa who is just a regular civilian not a Weber maniac always says "Wow, what is that one, it looks so cool" Grandpa has become quite a celebrity....
-
Thats because he's the MAN!
-
I think what one of the things that makes Grandpa so interesting is that he has the look of an old Bouy with the rust like the first kettle.

Grandpa is the Kettle that I always picture standing in the center with a bunch of newer kettles surrounding him and he's just taking them to school on how its done, oh and also chastising the millennial kettles once in a while "You kids with your new fangled plastic handles, lid bales and gas assist" "In my day my first owner had to build pyramids of charcoal and stick matches in the bottom and that's the way it was and we liked it!" "In my day we didn't have chimneys, if you wanted a rapid start you got out a FIRE BLOWER!"
Grandpa is a Badass! 8)

Kirk-welcome to the site. Whats the story with the avocado grill in your photobucket?? that looks like a true rescue.
Well about 2 months ago i help my buddy move into his new house in the Mtns just outside Santa Cruz CA...in Boulder Creek actually. When we pulled up it was on the curb, i claimed that so fast. The 10 or so people all thought i was nuts it was it worse shape than those photos. Mold mildew rust everywhere. This thing looks like it fell about 10 feet off their back deck into the creek on more than one occasion. I still cant identify it yet truly as im still learning. The battle scars are fierce with this one. Cooker not a looker is how its gonna roll....even with its peg leg wheel missing.
-
Oh yeah seriously...how did you get that top vent damper so clean and shiny? I used 0000 wool but do you do more than that? Any polish or has anyone taken a buffer to the kettles?
-
Looks like an old school avacado from the photos....still some life in it yet and definately a good resto project. Theres a lot of good information on this site to assist. As for the dampers, a mag/aluminum cleaner like Mothers Mag or similar works very well and can bring a mirror-like shine to those vents and legs.
