So I have been stalking this Avocado near my house, and today I finally had the chance to stop by and see if it may be for sale...Here is a picture I took a while ago
(http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z276/zavod112/IMG_20121229_093426_496_zps9ed41cef.jpg)
I drove by to see if it was still out there and sure enough it was. So I pulled in the driveway. I got out and approached the door, even before I was able to knock the door opened and I was met by a scraggly bearded man, who may or may not have had less than ten teeth. I said hello and I had a strange question to ask....He gave me a strange look, I told him I was a collector of old Webers and asked if he might be willing to sell or trade the old grill out behind the garage. He didn't even take two seconds and he told me no, he really liked his grill and he uses it a lot. I said okay I can respect someone who is attached to their Weber. I asked if I could at least look at it. He said sure and he actually had another "red one" out behind the shed. So we went to look. The Avocado was in pretty decent shape, minimal chips, the handle was totally shot, but otherwise very nice. It had the skinny whitewall plastic wheels. The redhead out behind the shed was decent as well, and to literally top it off, it had a Corn N Tater rack sitting on top...I asked if he would part with it but he said no... So I told him I would give him some handles to replace the ones he had that were rotted. He was happy...I was just trying to spread a little Weber Karma around.....I told him thanks for letting me look at his grills, and we shook hands. He said his name was Don. He told me he and his buddy have cook outs all the time and they love their grills. His friend has five black Webers. So even though there was no score I at least I tried, and because of an old Weber grill, I met a nice guy.

too bad on the cado Brian, but still pretty cool that he would yap at ya. Love the respect.
-
I'm totally into the Karma deal Brian. Good for you to pass some aliong to the guy. It will come back to you in some unexpected way soon.
-
Cool visit!
You made sure it was not abandoned. Can you blame him for not wanting to get rid of it?
-
He was into the old grills, it was pretty cool...I figure if he's still excited and cooking for a bunch of people like Buckie does then the least I could do is give him some fresh handles to keep them in the fight for a while longer.....he said he needed the tater rack, he said he uses it all the time...

I shed a tear over that story.. Did you give him your card, just in case he may want to sell it isomeday? Or are you going to stop by every couple months and share a few war stories?
You know how it starts, a handle here, a hanlde there and before you no it, you get em hooked on a monthly diet of fresh handles for there old kettles..
Thats how it started for me.
Hello Everyone, my name is AJ, and I am addicted to Webers.. 8)

When I go back, I'll give him my number, either way it's all good...

"and before you no it, you get em hooked on a monthly diet of fresh handles for there old kettles.....Thats how it started for me."
^^^^^ You do know what that is, don't you?
that is a good story Brian.....it will come back around & the other thing I was thinking about is that there's WAY MORE guys like that who just grill away as a part of "The Silent BBQ Majority", than there is off the deepend types like us...... I paid particular attention to the fact he had a 'grillin' buddy' & that they get together & cook ( on Webers, of course !!! )
-
I drove by his buddies house....I saw five older Webers on his driveway....

Great story Brian and another great reply from AJ. ;D Would it be possible for you to get a picture of him with his installed handles next to his cado?
-
Great story! Good of ya to pass along new handles for the older grills. Hopefully Don looks at them every time he opens the lid.
-
Great read, Brian! Your kettle karma just went up today for sure. Sounds like these guys are pretty passionate about their Webers and their cooking. Did you tell him about WKC?
-
nice story. when you go back to put the handle on, get a better picture of it!
i spotted an 18" two tone redhead the other day in the ghetto. no freaking way i'm knocking on that door.
-
That is a cool story Brian, if you could get a picture of both, i love Redheads ;D
-
Great story Brian! Win some, loose some, but meat a person that respects Kettles, that is a win situation.
-
That's whats it's all about man! I'm glad you made a new grill buddy. You just never know, that old guy might be some kids grandpa making the kind of Weber memories that we all know and love :'(
Thanks for sharing Brian

You should have offered to buy him a new Weber kettle in exchange? He might have gone for that?
-
I tried, I asked him point blank if he would sell them or trade for a new one....he said no he liked his old ones....

Okay so I stopped back at the (Don's) house today. I was on the way to meet Terry and Troy for some grill trading. I figured I would stop by and drop off a couple of the old two rivet style handles for his old grill. I wanted to spread some good cheer around especially after this week of bullshit in the news that has sickened me. I thought it would be nice to help the guy out by setting him up with some new handles and it would be a nice surprise.
As I pulled into his driveway and before I even got to the door he was there and opening it up. Last time he had a irritated look , this time he had a smile. I told him I had just dropped by to give him some handles (because last time I said I would). He said I didn't need to do that and he was very happy....I felt good, as I said after this week, and today being the anniversary of the Columbine Massacre I needed some good mojo.
Now listen to this.....Last time I stopped by and talked with Don everyone said I had some good grill karma heading my way. Well a week later I had two grill deals going good and then both fell through....one of them I was being strung along by some jag off, and apparently he got off on fucking with me and making me drive all around with no intention of selling me the grill....So I started thinking geeze I thought I had some good karma coming my way and now I keep getting jerked around. The guy who was messing with me, he was selling a 18 bud light grill, who I was actually trying to get as a surprise for my wife's cousin. When I thought I had the deal closed I told him and he got all excited. Well as the deal went south over the course of a week, I could tell he was bummed. Then I felt bad because I shouldn't even have told him and it wouldn't have been a big deal. Well I then turned to the WKC and I posted to see if anyone here had a Bud Light 18 and low and behold the WKC came through. Multiple people had leads, I had one on standby in Phoenix, but Terry right here in Chicago had one and we did a trade and it all worked out! The good karma was telling me the other grill was not for me....that wasn't the right one. The asshole had bad karma and he didn't deserve anything. The good karma led me back here and to help other fellow members. I was also able to help Troy because he was in need of some handles as well....SOOOOO the moral of the story is spread around some good feelings...it seems to bay itself back exponentially....
-
Great story with a happy ending Brian! :)
-
You are a Saint sir
I must admit when I saw this thread bumped, I thought that Don might of changed his mind on a trade,
Good things happen to good people
-
Glad I could help out Brian...love the handles!
-
My wife's cousin was so excited, he came right over and I let him pick any handle he wanted...almost....He was happy with the grill....Thanks so much Terry, it was great to meet you. Hope you can make it to the June meet up...
-
Almost any handle, lol...glad he enjoyed the grill! Good finally meeting you too Brian. Looking forward to June.
-
Nice story Brian. I would have liked to see pics of the old guy with the new handles on his avacado and red! What was his reaction when you put them on? Or did you just hand the handles to him?
-
Pretty nice Brian! It's nice to read a good story with a truly happy ending.
-
I just handed them to him...I didn't want to bother the guy too much since I just dropped in on him.....was trying to walk the line between nice guy and creeper
-
Great follow up to the original story. Karma will be on your side.

Well, you were still there to save me ...ANNNNNNNNDDDDD you, for some reason had a battery in your car, just waiting to use on my car...If that isn't Karma what is?
-
Too funny, I remember seeing the battery in Troy's car...all part of his plan for you to stay at the mall much too long!
