Title: 14.5 Bandwagon
Post by: fedex on August 28, 2016, 10:23:03 PM
OK, I jumped on the bandwagon this morning.  Went to Lowes this morning to pick up ten bags of Stubbs and Wallyworld is right next door.  One left on clearance for $79.  Although I didn't needed it cuz I have an 1880 E code

I couldn't resist.  Breaking it in right now with a 6# butt.  Not using the water pan I use a foiled 12" pizza pan.  Two positive observations,. Right out of the box this little guy is cruising at 228.  Top vent wide open and two bottoms closed and the third at half.  The dome therm is just 5 deg higher then the Maverick.  I'll post pics when it's done.

That 6.5lb pork butt finally have up after 10 hours.

Wow! Nice cook. I'd have a hard time explaining that one. "Hey babe, I'm getting some charcoal on sale, be back in a few." Comes home with Stubb's and another Weber. "Um.....about that.....never mind that little guy"

Nice pickup, Bob. How about a side-by-side shot of the 1880 and new one?

I just did my first overnight smoke on my 14.5 Saturday night/Sunday.  Started at 8pm, Was up to temp (225) at 9, I checked at 3am, it was at 220, woke up at 6 and it was at 190...no big deal, added a bit more charcoal, and I pulled it at 10am.  It was a 9lb pork butt.  Put it in a cooler with towels, went on a hike with the kids and was back home by 1:30 to eat a late lunch.

I like that it doesn't use as much charcoal as my 18 incher did, but I will say it is too small to effectively do a rack of ribs.  On the other hand, it's perfect for pork butt, which is still my favorite.

Thanks for posting your comparative thoughts between your 14" and 18" WSM's.  I'm always on the fence about picking up a 14" to keep my 18" company, especially now that summer sales are getting lower.

Sweet little cooker and GREAT first cook!  I picked one up at Walmart for $99 the other day but have yet to cook on it.  Maybe this weekend?
