Title: Before and After - Show off your Restore!
Post by: 56MPG on August 16, 2016, 03:34:40 PM: So many great restores, but they get buried in various individual threads. Let's keep them in one place here regardless whether they have already been posted elsewhere. We all love seeing how new life can be breathed into the most derelict, neglected and unloved kettles. Let's leave it to one shot before and one after in this thread, but link to the full thread if you have one so we can relive the Restore journey with you again and again.

Post by: fedex on August 16, 2016, 04:54:10 PM: OK, not a kettle but just finished these wheels today. 00 steel wool, CLR, Vinegar, Baking Soda and lots of masking tape. Not the greatest but definitely better then before.

Thanks! I look at it as a protection barrier. Not easy taking it off though, especially around lid vent area. Took my time as I did not want to scratch the vent or the Green porcelain finish.

I've only done a few clean ups/restores so I'm pretty much a novice at this point.
My favorite is a 84 22" Craigslist ad. 2nd owner.
The original owners used to take it out on their house boat; dock and grill turkeys for their clan. I had to follow suit and grill one myself on the first cook. Not too bad.

Anyway, an hour or two with 0000 steel wool and Barkeepers Friend:

Bought one new food grate and one new charcoal grate locally. Shimmed the legs on the OTG with beer-can trimmings. Cooked on both all week. Ribs, shrimp, chicken, corn, burgers, brats.
Note to self: Bring steel wool, BKF, razor scraper, magic eraser and a clean grate on every vacation.

Overall it came out pretty good. The lid has a few places where the porcelain did not fade due to long dribbles of something.. nothing I can do about that.. but it's ready for more cooking!

Although, not as pristine as my Red Mastertouch I got earlier, inside and outside was clean enough that all I did was burn-in and started using right away. Same as before. No cleaning required.

He even helped me load it up. A little while later my father seen it in the garage and started asking about it. I decided to surprise him for Father's Day. I'm thinking the green is the after picture. All mildewed and moldy to begin with, a good cleaning and it's a high gloss black.

Razor blade and lots of scrubbing. ;D ;D ;D

I do love black kettles but the Green little more. Not your typical restore but still a restore as I had to change out the sweeper assy. and clean all the parts to like new condition. :)

99% of these are the original Weber porcelain finish.....some folks will touch up chipped & rusted areas, but that's usually not the case.....

A gentle scrub down with Dawn dish soap & 0000 steel wool (very EXTRA fine stuff) is what produces the exquisite shine on these gems....

....or, like it says in my signature lines.....

"If you want it fancy there is BBQ spray paint at home depot for that. "

I used a stain called Gunstock . And then a couple coats of polyurethane.

Followed by colour coding the badge and gas tank to it. Still awaiting the table handle from Brian to finish it off.

Hey All!

This is a one-owner 73 that has been in our family from the beginning. I posted a few months ago about digging into a resto and I finally found time to get it done! Using the tips and tricks from WKC, I brought him back to life and I am quite happy. I even got the gorgeous handle from the link here and it is the crowning piece to the project!

Legs, ash pan, bowl, lid and wheels where all worked on.

Tex lives on and will be in the cook rotation now.

I just got a brand spanking new blue lid, and it was ever so slightly out of round, so I squeezed it just a little bit and got it perfectly round. Unfortunately it cracked just like the lines on the top picture here! I’m so mad at myself for doing that, I didn’t realize the colored ones crack like that. Can anything be done about it? Were you able to fix that too?
