Only light green ones show up on Google Earth.........................
It's obviously discarded !
-
You gonna grab it Smooth? Let me know if you need help pulling off that caper. 8)
This could also be titled "Lime Green stalking duece" West Coast!
-
Get it already
Get on that shit
Won't take no for an answer
I'm feelin fruity
-
I plan on getting it, just need to figure out how. This is in Santa Cruz, although near me, not close. I just happened to be taking my tourist family members to the boardwalk yesterday and spotted it. It's metal handled, and appeared to be a 22. The hard part about getting it is it looks like it's in an abandoned lot. Their are houses behind and on both sides. It must be the yellow house/duplex junk yard. If I can't manage to get it, I know Duke can. 8)
-
And yes I felt totally awkward taking that pic and then having to explain it to these people that I spotted something great in what looks like a trash pile. :o
-
If you can't get it I will give it a shot when I am there in a couple weeks. The roblem is some of those older homes have neighbors that are always watching and stay up all night doing who knows what? That's the problem I encountered with that old SJ. I don't want some tweaked neighbor letting his pit lose on me. Although it would make great video footage. ;D

The Prime Directive has been spoken..... 8)
Abandoned lot...all the better.....
-
I just don't think I can pull off these kinds of jobs here in Texas. Luckily there aren't near as many temptations either.

This may seem a little harsh, but if we give you the Prime Directive, you'll have to git 'er done....
Prime Directive:

:o :o :o...ohh boy here we go again!!! ;D ;D ;D

OK Dule, just say the word and we can "Ride".. I can film it like the punks who do sideshows in OTown.. 8)

Will do! That would be hilarious. Maybe we could grab that old sj as well.
-
Best time to do shit like this is in broad daylight
Just put on a fluro shirt and act like a tradie / workman
Even say g'day to the neighbors
Relax and go about it in a calm manner
-
All I'm saying is that this is Texas, a grill heist could turn into Resevoir Dogs real quick
-
Duke, we need a couple Weber Employee work shirts. Your name tag can say Jeff, and mine can say Brian. Oh yeah, and a couple of those Blues Brothers sunglasses. Cause were on a mission from God!

These abandoned limes are popping up like easter eggs. Go get that grill!
-
I cant believe you guys found another one...google stalking, hmmm. If I was closer, I'd be all over it yesterday. You guys are slipping. If it WAS me, Ed, or Brian, we'd already have the cleaned up pics posted on here.
-
I don't even know the address. ??? As soon as Smooth gives the go ahead wer'e on it.
-
Did you even knock on door? I tried yesterday on a metal handled gray and denied. But they still lived there. Wish the husband would
have been home... Lady was scared sh!tless...
-
I'll probably let Duke get dibs on this one. It's a few blocks away from the yacht harbor.
Here is a screen shot from Google Earth, possibly been out there for a few years or more.

Perfect! It looks a lot safer than the last one I was after. Thanks Smooth! BTW, can anyone tell if it's an 18 or 22? It looks like a 22, but the handle looks square?

I think I recall seeing a squared side handle, maybe it is an 18.

Looked at many times, looks 18, would be easier to if smoothsmoke would have moved some garbage...

I have it on good authority that one of the "Goodfellas" has pulled the caper and has it safely in his possesion. He's so confident, he is on his way to check out another possible "Job"
I can't name any names, but it rhymes with "Luke" Oh yeah, its an old 18, missing one wheel.
Another salvage job for the team! Woohoo! 8)
-
Another mission complete. Nice going on dat job Duke!
-
I said Luke, not Duke.. 8)
-
Another saved and free...Looking forward to some pic's.
-
Well done Griillfellas...... I'll sleep better tonight knowing another grill has been saved from the scrapyard 8)

The Tale of Sigmund the Sealime Kettle................
So I started to walk into the yard. I won't lie to you boys, I
was terrified! :o But I pressed on and as I made my way passed the
plants a strange calm came over me. I don't know if it was divine
intervention or the kinship of all living things but I tell you guys
at that moment I was a Grillfella! 8)
(http://img809.imageshack.us/img809/1719/sealime.jpg) (http://img809.imageshack.us/i/sealime.jpg/)
The sea at the harbor was angry that day my friends, like an old man trying to
return soup at a deli! ???
(http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/174/002vs.jpg) (http://img577.imageshack.us/i/002vs.jpg/)
I got about fifty-feet out and then suddenly the great beast
appeared before me. I tell ya he was ten stories high if he was a
foot. As if sensing my presence he gave out a big bellow. I said,
"Easy little fella!" And then as I watched him struggling I realized
something was obstructing his leg. From where I was standing
I could see directly into the eye of the great 18.5 Sealime kettle!
Then from out of nowhere a huge tidal wave lifted, tossed like a cork and I found myself on top of it face to face with the vent holes. I could barely see from all of the waves crashing down on top of me but I knew something was there so I reached my hand and pulled the leg out of the seaweed only sacrificing it's wheel! :D

-
LOL! You got the one SJ you kicked on the porch! Nice! Double bonus trip. What was in the cooler?
-
8) What can I say, it's gone! and theres nothing we could do about it! 8)
IT IS A GLORIOUS TIME! Nice job! Can't wait to see it after being given the grillfella treatment. I'm gonna take a wild guess, but is it an engraved WEBER vent logo? Mid '70s?
-
It could ONLY be titled this:
The Tale of Sigmund the Sealime Kettle................
Nice double- whammy !!!!!
The lime's cook grate looks new
( or is that Joe's? ) & the kettle ain't chipped very much at all...the rim of the lid is what I look for 1st.....
I see you have one of those quick draw truck bed covers....

haha! Seeing that lime covered in twigs and leaves does remind me of some of the "bush" disguises worn by Col. John Hannibal Smith. ;D
-
Attention everyone!! Secure your kettle and keep your lawn mowed. If you yard looks a little overgrown and neglected your kettle might just grow legs and walk away on you someday!! ::)
-
I just live a few blocks from the harbor. They are clearing out that empty lot for a custom home. I saw it, but never got a chance to grab it. My paddle partner lives across the street. It was headed for the dumpster in the street any day. I'm so glad someone here rescued it. Please let me know what the date for the WKC West Coast Chapter get together at the beach will be. I will be there. Bring it and we will cook on it and take a few snaps with it. You da man Duke! ;)
-
Careful Casey, you don't want to give Duke a big head, he already has a big ego! 8)
-
(http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/739/006era.jpg) (http://img823.imageshack.us/i/006era.jpg/)
Stranger yells out to you...: "HEY WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING!?" Grillfella: "Taking this burning bush home to my yard We're um doing some landscaping" Stranger: "Hey we don;t have any burning bushes around here" Grillfella: "I know! That's why I'm taking this one! They're rare! Yeah, thats the ticket! They're rare!" Stranger: oh, ok well, good luck with your "burning bush!" ;D
-
I guess no one likes these lime colored grills.....
-
Looks like another rescued....was that smokey in the pile too?
-
Attention everyone!! Secure your kettle and keep your lawn mowed. If you yard looks a little overgrown and neglected your kettle might just grow legs and walk away on you someday!! ::)
Mark, is that sarcasm or do you think that saving these old grills that are abviously left out to die a slow death of neglect is the wrong thing to do?
Does anyone think that were going too far? Just curious..
-
I guess no one likes these lime colored grills.....
Based on some of the civillian articles written about Weber history, the 'Cados, Yellows, and Limeys get a bad wrap. Oh well, more for us collectors, I say!
-
Does anyone think that were going too far? Just curious..
Nah, these are rescues by fellow collectors when they are abandoned. If they were someone's grill on their patio and someone just made off with it, then yes, thats out of line. Rescue, Reuse, Restore, Respect! 8) I know that's not exactly whats on the WKC shirt logo, but it's everything we're about.
-
If I saw a cool grill on someone porch I would go say hello, not jack it. If it is clearly in a junk pile, then go rescue it...A guy who live real close to me has a burgundy...I talked to him. He was a nice guy. I told him if he wanted to get rid of it to let me know......
-
Thanks for all of the great comments everyone! Some of the parts are really rusty from the salt air. It was in a trash pile and on it's way out. I'm just glad it was saved and will be reconditioned to grill another day. Good eye Smoothsmoke! Like Craig said, Rescue, Reuse, Restore, Respect! :)
Nobody got this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0u8KUgUqprw&feature=player_detailpage

Man, I love these search and rescue threads. I can't wait to find one myself what a riot! I can just imagine how Duke's heart was pounding during the rescue.

THAT was an awesome read. All doubts have been erased - I'm at home here!
-
Nobody's gonna make a joke about a California kettle surrounded by weeds? ;D
-
That's Brian's Job! But he likes Duke more than me.. If it was my rescue, the fan would be spewing! 8)

Hey, they got a doctor's note for it.

I prefer, "A Script".. But in Colorado, it purely for enjoyment. You just can't take any back home when the vacation is over! 8)

We do? You went to the beach wihout me.. :(
-
HOLE IN ONE!!!! Nice job duke!
"All they got from Duke was protection from other guys looking to toss them out. That's what it's all about. That's what the other site's can never understand - that what Duke and the organization offer is protection from the kinds of guys who toss great old grills. They're like the police department for Grillfella's"
I'm proud to be a member. It brings a tear to my eye :'(

We should start rating the search and rescue missions on a scale of Black 22 to Lime 18 with Lime being the hardest. We could do pins or WWII style kill stickers for each mission accomplished.
-
I think we need to reserve the highest rating for the '52; the ultimate rescue. It's only a matter of time. Now that's gonna be a story for the ages!

Is that your 20 year pin?
-
No, I am not a direct employee, just a rep. Plus I have only been around 12 years. I got that off a blog, forgot which one.
-
Great story, and great score.
I think swiping someone's junk is acceptable - as long as a solid effort had been made into contacting the potential owner and assuring that the grill is indeed abandoned.

Is thus still in rebuild?

Yes, almost there. ;)

Nice! Looking forward to the pictures.
-
Or "upgrade", don't forget about that option. Most would take a newer/cleaner grill for their old junked out lime/cado/warrior/red grill. Of corse that excludes any of the fellas around here.
-
Nice! Looking forward to the pictures.
I will also be sharing the full story with it. 8)

What tha
and where do we get one of these
And don't tell me it's like the bottle opener ::)

Golly, I saw that on line, some blog about work or picnics or benefits. It looks like a service pin they would give actual employees for time spent in "Mecca".

Mark, is that sarcasm or do you think that saving these old grills that are abviously left out to die a slow death of neglect is the wrong thing to do?

Sorry, I've been away from the computer and net for almost a week.
My post was a little of both, I suppose. It was sarcasm in the sense that I'm assuming that every effort to make sure the claimed grills were truly abandoned was made. The cloak and dagger nature of these adventures is funny to follow.
I think it might be going too far in the sense that private property is private property. And, who's to say what abandoned is? Think of it like this goofy over the top scenario :o :o:
You have a crazy old uncle with a yellow ranger, a sequoia, and a prototype for the first Weber kettle in his yard. He's nuts, everyone knows it. You ask for the Weber stuff and he says, "You can have it when I'm dead, but if you come get it before then I'll shoot 'ya!" So you wait, he croaks, but when you go to pick up the stuff someone has made off with it because his yard was overgrown and he was too nuts to ever answer his door.
So, was that stuff abandoned, or did it belong to a crazy old fart who was going to give it to his nephew with a Weber problem when he finally kicked off? I always like to err on the side of, "If I didn't pay for it or I wasn't given direct permission then it ain't mine to take."
Okay, buzzkill mode switched off. ;)
-
So...you have a crazy old uncle do ya? I'll take his prototype...I've got the other two! JK!!
As far as my opinion, if every effort is made to try and contact the owner with no luck, then try again, leave a note, a replacement grill, speak to a neighbor, or something. Plus...if you know the history of the site like it hasn't been lived in for years, its overgrown with weeds and trees...then go for it. At that point, nobody obviously cares about the place or the property.
-
Maybe you missed this Mark. No worries.
I just live a few blocks from the harbor. They are clearing out that empty lot for a custom home. I saw it, but never got a chance to grab it. My paddle partner lives across the street. It was headed for the dumpster in the street any day. I'm so glad someone here rescued it.

If I had that crazy old uncle I'd be waiting in his driveway. I might even make loud noises to try and speed the process along!!
I don't think I'd have a problem with the scenario you mentioned, Jeff. It looks like efforts were made to chase down that info by the guys here.
-

Yeah, I saw that, Casey. I was just answering HeyJude. He had asked me a question a last week and I was away from the net. I'm glad it was rescued too. That sounds like a justifiable procurement to me. Yeah, I know I'm contradicting myself in some ways. The property was owned by someone, but if it was going to be trashed, and obviously so, I'd have grabbed it too.
8)
-
Yeah, they are always tearing old houses down in these neighborhoods and replacing them with custom homes. The buliders usually don't care since they just trash everything. I'm surprised it lasted that long with all of the scrap metal collectors around here. I will be watching a little more closely now. The flea market out here is also a good place to find old webers. That's where I got my red one.
-
Hey mark,
How does one actually fall off the "Net" as you say.. I try, but its all aorund me.
My comment wasn't directed at just you, Aas you can see by the responses.)
I apprecaite you getting back to me as well.
I wanted to see what the collective group thoght about the issue. Morals, etc..
Clearly we feel that if efforts are made, we are doing a "Rescue".
Someday I'll find my own to rescue, but not too many weed overgrown houses where I live..
Speaking of Uncles, did ya read my post in the "of topic " section. Check it out, it still amazes me! AJ 8)

I had my eye on that Lime for almost a year. It never moved, and no one was there. That being said, (and I think it was gone over before) I rally was torn. I didn't just want to steal someones stuff even though it was clearly abandoned. The satellite pictures showed it hadn't moved in almost two years. I would never have taken that grill without exhausting every option. Honestly If Rielly hadn't thought of leaving a brand new grill I prob wouldn't have had the guts to take it...I feel like we for sure upgraded the homeless man that may or may not have been using that. For me it was a really tough decision even though we all know the next step was tossing it in the dumpster when they cleared the property. I don't think anyone here would take something off someones property who clearly lived there...That place in California was clearly abandoned . If we don't get them , then this is usually the outcome....

I remember that pic. Makes you want to reach out and grab it!

My buddy took this, if I had seen this I would have stopped him...did you notice, this is another lime!

Limes seem to be the "ugly duckling" of kettles.....to the pedestrian grilling population that is.
-
My buddy took this, if I had seen this I would have stopped him...did you notice, this is another lime!
Damn those limes always throwing their lives away! Get off that junk! You limes hear me! >:( ................almost as bad as those reds and thier bad attitudes. You hear me out there reds? Stop starting trouble! >:(

So Limes are neurotic and have suicidal tendencies and redheads are bitchy? ??? So does this mean that browns are just poopy? ;D
-
Maybe Brown are the warriors, in the rear with the gear. Just quietily getting the work done. Blues are royal, standing aloof and hard to get. Greens are in hidding in plain sight, like camo kettle ninja's. Black classic kettles are readily recognizable backyard symbols that can be found anywhere.
-
Avocado's are the Bride to the Lime's Bridesmaid. Yellows are happy, yet unattainable. I would agree with you about the Browns and modern black kettles, however as time passes, classic black (metal handled) ones are IMO becoming more stealth like. Grey-Fade kettles, are the "sage" or "wise" black ones. The Ben Kenobi of kettles.

It's nice to see them all calm & relaxed at home after reading the story of what they've been thru.................
-
Okay, you get that seven back. Seven posts. :)

I just thought it gives it that early seventies white shoe look. 8)

You did good. I don't care what anyone says, that grill looks a lot better after it has been cleaned up and fed. It just would not be right leave that stray on the side of the road half naked and starving to death. You've got a no kill kettle kennel going on there. Rescue, restore, oh I forgot the others. Troy, where are the shirts.
-
Nice work duke
No wonder kettle gasser hasn't seen any love yet

Finally. Wow that looks great considering how you acquired it. It was acquired with the five finger discount. Correct ??

I love the walnut/dark handle against the lime. The white "shoes" are a nice touch too! Kind of like Clark Griswold's

I was thinking of George in that purple shirt with the yellow 22 where he's grilling in patton leather white shoes, and the rest of the regulars are wearing them too. Classic! I'm looking for a pair. :D

That too! Its fun to look through those old catalogs and watch George go from a military crew cut and his early 60s pastel duds to mustache and longer hair with 70s stripes to the purple shirt of '73. He (and everyone else) are sporting the white shoes in the '72 one as well. The idea of a throwback cookout with pics sound better and better all the time. A "Dress in the decade your kettle was made" cookout. Gotta be 70s! ;D

The shoes could also match the shirt. 8)

I liked your first caption better! I almost quoted it. ;D Did you make those ash triangles? Those are sweet! That Lime 22 there makes me think of Happy Days in that it's from the 70s but it's reliving the 50s. I Love it! 8)
-
I wasn't sure if anyone would get it. Yes, I made the triangle. It needs work though.
-
Great restore Duke. I cant wait for spring so I can start on my projects!

Ok whats the story on this green 1950's Weber ??
-
It's just an older one I spiffed up.
-
Duke lets his secets out in pieces.
-
Duke, you might be on to something with replica triangle ash pans. They'd make a great accessory for a classic '50s kettle style.
-
Here's another one for the folks that have joined us recently........
""So, was that stuff abandoned, or did it belong to a crazy old fart who was going to give it to his nephew with a Weber problem when he finally kicked off? I always like to err on the side of, "If I didn't pay for it or I wasn't given direct permission then it ain't mine to take.""
