Title: My Blue SS performer w/ mods
Post by: mrgoodbar67 on November 04, 2015, 02:59:19 PM
Earlier in the year, i found this red 98 SS performer on CL.  It had belonged to the sellers friend who had passed away approx 10 years ago.  Thinking they'd use it, they kept it only be stored away for that long.  They finally decided to let it go on CL and I was the lucky one enough to be there first.

(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/ss2_zps8sz8titw.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/ss2_zps8sz8titw.jpg.html)

I already had a black OTS with slide aside that I was using with two side table but had always wanted a Performer since i saw them on WKC.  When i bough the SS, the OTS was sold on CL as well.

(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/bbq1_zpsbgfrgjlg.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/bbq1_zpsbgfrgjlg.jpg.html)

But the red bowl and lid didn't appeal too much to me so I reached out to @zavod44 and proposed a trade worthy enough to take place on draft day in the NFL.
In exchange for a blue bowl and lid off one of his performers, he received my red bowl and lid along with one first round draft pick for 2017, a player to be named later and cash considerations.  Just like that, the deal was done.

Once I received the blue SS bowl/ lid I installed it on my SS cart and was very happy.

Since I had been researching WKC and other forums, i started to plan diff mods that I would perform on the....performer.

I ordered wooden handles for the lid, vent and bin door from @zavod44 as well and then upgraded the propane tank, hose and regulator to accept the small disposable tanks. When I bought the SS on CL, the hose was torn (rats?) and the propane tank was empty an no longer refillable.

Along with that, I moved the igniter to the front panel and now and have access to it and the regulator on/off knob without having to lift the bin door.  To do this, i used the old propane tank bracket that was used to hold the old 10 lb tank to the SS frame.  Instead I used it as the bracket to mount the regulator and disposable propane tank.  I had it welded to the rear of the front panel and rigged it to accept the new regulator and tank.  Works great.

I also really liked the lid bale but didn't like the way the lid didn't allow me access to the entire grill. Seeing that the lid hook was not factory on the performer lids, I researched again and found some posts by @Winz, @JosephJ, @DirectDrive and @ClubChapin that helped me do the lid hook mod.  I also have to credit another forum (TVWBB) for some ideas and tips for both lid hook and propane tank upgrade mods.

The holes leftover from removing the lid bale were plugged using hole plugs and fiber washers at the recommendation of  @ClubChapin. They are tight and have no air leaks.

Mods I still want to do-

Add the wood panels to the bottom wire rack. just like @Idahawk did to his green SS "the Idaho".
May install the 2015 lid bale like @ClubChapin and ask @zavod44 for wooden lid bale rollers
Extension mod that @Winz did on his copper SS "the Bisbee"
Lift kit that @Bman did

Thanks to all of you for posting advice, tips and pics to help me out with my SS. @zavod44  Thanks for helping with pic posting

If possible, Ill post a vid of it in action and as well as some cook pics.

Nice score, trade, mods, and pictures!  You're leg mounts and ash catcher aren't lined up the same as my SS Performer....anyone know what thats all about?

The blue bowl is from the new Gen Perfromer, 2005+ i believe. That could be it.

Notice how my original red ss bowl from 98 and your red bowl have the leg sockets in the same position.  Since the leg sockets are in different positions, that will effect how the ash catcher bowl is mounted because it attaches to the leg sockets.

You ash catcher looks like the newer ones. correct?  No twist needed, just a squeeze and a tilt?

@mrgoodbar67 - Correct.  I got the new model ash catcher.  Had to break of the hanging tabs that would go into the legs and then I drilled and rived the catcher ring in place.

Nice job! Good to see someone else using an SJ bowl as a charcoal ring!

Its not the SJ bowl....its something i made from a heating vent piece i bought at HD and added wire mesh to.

Man great mods there on that performer! All the wood on there looks great, especially on the vent, that's sharp!

But one thing in your post confused me, you got a new grill and then sold your old one? That doesn't make sense 😀

The lid vent wood is credited to Brian. He's good at what he does.  Too bad his Cubs couldn't be as good. I was rooting for them because my almanac said they'd win

As far as the selling of the  ots...... Well, I couldn't see myself keeping someone from the fun I had with my ots.  Way I figure, someone was itching for a hit of the weber kettle drug and I supplied them

She's a bute for sure! Soon as Brian mentioned a wood vent tab, I HAD to have one. Once I knew he was making it for me, the plastic one was glaring to me. Really ties the room together.

I think I'd keep the lid hook over the lid bale but that's just personal preference. I like the lid out of the way and I don't find lifting it into place a chore.

Really nice mods you've made!

See I have never had a problem with the lid bale but a lot of folks prefer the hook. Like you said personal preference!

Nice job! I have a blue SS performer and love it!

So, i finally did this mod that @Idahawk inspired me to do.  As he stated in his post, the wire rack that the SSP has is not big enough for items and sits too far under the grill.

I used Tung oil and Spar varnish along with a stain that I already had in the garage that happened to match the handles Brian sent.

What you guys think?

(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/shelf4_zpsz9zz4u5p.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/shelf4_zpsz9zz4u5p.jpg.html)

Here is the raw wood cut to size.  I placed the boards to see how they would look and checked how much spacing I would need between the boards.  I noticed the end boards would need notches cut out on the corners to allow flush fitting with the frame.

(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/shelf1_zpsq0flr6xi.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/shelf1_zpsq0flr6xi.jpg.html)

Here I have begun to apply oils, before stain, stain again and seal several times.

Here, i assembled the boards and then screwed them to the guide boards that will fit between the bottom frame rails. The two guide boards keep the shelf from sliding and fit tight

I now have the wire rack that I no longer need.  Anyone want it?

Next mods...lift...wooden rollers, etc and the extension to the table

fun project!

So did ClubChapin tell you about his electric start mod??

http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/electric-start-on-performer-ss-conversion/

This might also work as an alternative, Weber #80453. It's the red button and igniter for a Q120/220/320. I used that to convert my Q300 to electric start. You'd have plenty of space for it on your Performer, but given your black/blue setup might want to use Weber's gray button instead.

That mod was on my radar for a while but i figured Id leave the ignitor the way it is.  No batteries needed and will last FOREVER.

So after seeing @Idahawk 's grill again and seeing what @firedude5015 did to his, i decided to finish my mods up and added the front panel wood too.

used pine again and stained it to match the bottom wood rack i had made, wood handles, rollers and vent tab that @zavod44 provided.

It was a bit difficult because I modded the igniter button and propane regulator.  Since the regulator knob wasnt sticking out enough through the wood panel after install, I added a kitchen stove knob just to be able and turn the propane on.  IT IS NOT PERMANENT and will be removed.

It came out great, I think.

Another Blue SSP owner here.  Love mine.

Nice mods.  I like the bale, but agree it's nice to get the lid out of the way.  So I will be adding the new bale that allows the lid to open wider.

Weber used to have a little storage cubby that went there on the non-gas assist SSPs.  Not sure where to find one.  That could be another option to fill where the control panel was with usable storage.

This is what it looks like.  @Cuda Dan owns this grill - a red non assist SS performer:

I was showing a picture of the "cubby" which is located at the bottom half of the picture I posted.  It is a metal shelf that sits next to the charcoal bin.

Here is a picture of the full grill sitting next to "Donna", a red M/T that I built.  Cuda Dan owns both of these grills:

looks like part 39 isnt available for purchase.  If i woulda known of it back when i did my reg and igniter mod...the mod would have been much easier.

It shouldn't be too hard to fabricate something similar to fill the void left by the control panel.

I would like to change the bale on mine too.  Anyone have a parts breakdown on what you all need?

I think the new bale includes all of the parts. I don't remember buying or needing anything in addition to the new part number.

ive thought about the 2015 lid bale mod but then the bale would stick out too much and the Weber SSP cover wont fit.

Unfortunately, that is true.  Have not found a cover that fits a SSP with the new Bale.

So, after looking at 2 of @Winz 's recent mods, I decided to add them to my blue ss.

first, I moved the regulator to under the flip-up charcoal bin lid and side mounted the propane tank.  Now its hidden and out of view.  No pic of the tank mounted, but it looks just like in Winzs pic
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/regmod1_zpscjptajpm.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/regmod1_zpscjptajpm.jpg.html)

Because I did this, I needed to replace the wooden panel so that it would no longer have the holes.  I also moved the weber plate to the right and moved the tool hooks to the left.
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/panel_zpss3tthbib.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/panel_zpss3tthbib.jpg.html)

Then i began to work on the Slide-Lid mod
I think I followed the same steps as Winz, however, I flipped the lid as suggested by @Troy so that little handle would be on the right and afford me more surface area to work with.
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/top3_zpsazvjkihv.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/top3_zpsazvjkihv.jpg.html)
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/front1_zpst7xxcdmy.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/front1_zpst7xxcdmy.jpg.html)
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/front2_zpsw0e3lxvj.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/front2_zpsw0e3lxvj.jpg.html)

Since I flipped the lid and wanted it to slide open, the side edges of the lid did not allow it to sit and slide flush with the fame bc of the cross member.  So....i dremmeled a groove into to each side of the cross member so that the lid edges had a "track" to slide on and allow the lid to sit/slide flush.
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/track1_zpsqeyq6ngd.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/track1_zpsqeyq6ngd.jpg.html)
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/track3_zpsim6tnqt0.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/track3_zpsim6tnqt0.jpg.html)

In order to install the drawer slides and keep the lid flush, i had to place 1/4 inch shims bw the slide and the grill frame
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/shim1_zpszoh3hzvj.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/shim1_zpszoh3hzvj.jpg.html)

Then I had to glue shims to the underside of the lid so that the track would attach to it and allow a flush slide
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/lidunder1_zpseazfjgit.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/lidunder1_zpseazfjgit.jpg.html)

Since the lid has a lip that hangs on the side w/out the handle, i had to dremmel a few holes to allow clearance for the reg knob and ignitor button so that the lid wouldnt hit them as its sliding.
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/dcd84d82-e094-4658-9aa6-a172bf786b95_zpsrle9dr0d.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/dcd84d82-e094-4658-9aa6-a172bf786b95_zpsrle9dr0d.jpg.html)

Finally I was done with the slide aside mod
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/top1_zpsho1eh8vc.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/top1_zpsho1eh8vc.jpg.html)

I already ordered a wire basket to replace the charcoal bin.  Due to the drawer slide install, the charcoal bin no longer fits.  I never really liked it anyway.

Im going to buy a wooden milk crate, paint it to match the wood on my grill and place it on the wooden rack.  It it will hold my charcoal, wood chunks and stuff.  Well see...

Thanks @Winz

Finished the "milk crate" mod today.  I think it looks pretty good.

The large panel on the front facing side of the crate looks too...bare.  I will be looking for something to place there.  Maybe another Weber Logo plate? i dunno, well see.
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/grillfront_zps3je6qazk.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/grillfront_zps3je6qazk.jpg.html)
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/sidecrate_zpsr94ci6b5.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/sidecrate_zpsr94ci6b5.jpg.html)
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/crate5_zpsl5s1aris.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/crate5_zpsl5s1aris.jpg.html)

I bought the crate at an arts and crafts store and painted it to match my wood pieces.
I had to line the interior of the crate with a black heavy duty plastic bag so that charcoal & its dust wouldn't fall out.
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/crate3_zpsvalx06iq.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/crate3_zpsvalx06iq.jpg.html)

Then, I placed the crate under the opening allowed by sliding lid.  At the moment, its easy to scoop up charcoal after sliding the lid, but once I place the basket there, I may have to slide the crate out a bit to get at the charcoal or i can remove the basket when needed. Either way its really easy an better than having to take things off the lid so that I can flip it up and grab charcoal.
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/slidelid_zpssesln1pl.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/slidelid_zpssesln1pl.jpg.html)

Im not worried about the charcoal getting wet since I have the heavy duty Weber SSP cover on my Grill all the time that goes down to the floor.

Now I have a charcoal bin and lid hinge rod for laying around...anyone want it???

@mrgoodbar67 Excellent looking SS Performer!  Lots of great mods to make it a unique kettle that I am sure you will enjoy for many years to come.  Really love the contrast of the blue and the light wood colors.  Glad you could incorporate the hidden gas and sliding table mods.  Really like your charcoal holder - great idea.

here i go again..

I decided to add a feature inspired by the newer performers.

Tilting charcoal crate!!
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/bin3_zpsppzjn0bb.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/bin3_zpsppzjn0bb.jpg.html)

just bought some cable, screwed it onto the charcoal crate and anchored it to the grill
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad97/RickyRowdy/bin5_zpsrozj8hib.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/RickyRowdy/media/bin5_zpsrozj8hib.jpg.html)

Now i can pull out the crate far enough to scoop up charcoal without neeading to take the entire thing out or worrying about it falling out.

While working on my Jumbo Joe smoker I decided to address some issues I was having with my SSP.

I used expanded aluminum grill toppers from Walmart ($3.99 for 3) as a bottom for the grate to allow me to shake all the ash out and keep any small usable charcoal or small lump after burns.

All i did was cut and shape to fit.  Theres my dog Brando, wondering WTF im up to again.

Also added some handles to the grate so that I can easily pick up the grate and shake out all small unusable charcoal and ash
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170223/a8b478e3179620f732385dbcd0bc26a1.jpg)

Not much but these mods will make it easier for me to get things done.

I received these awesome Oak end caps for the SSP today. They look great!  Phenomenal work @zavod44

Also, the winter months is usually when I get to working on projects.  This year was no diff.  Finished my JJ smoker and added this to my SSP

Bought I sliding hang basket from target cut off a few pieces that didn't allow it to sit flush under the ss frame, Screwed it on and done.

I had it replace the previous basket I had.  This one is able to slide out and is deeper.  Allowing for more room for storage.  No longer need a charcoal only basket

You can see that I bought the 2nd gen Performer plate and installed on the front panel.  Gives me extra place to hang stuff and the grills name is now front and "center"?

Anyone interested in buying the old basket from me? PM me.
