Title: Brian goes Hawaiian
Post by: MartyG on January 27, 2013, 11:44:15 AM
The top handle in this photo might have fallen off a red MT somewhere near Chicago. Probably not. More likely from your average black curb-side throw-out. Whatever the case, the bottom handle serves as a good reminder that the B-man has mad skills in the woodshop, and might have scored some more of that Koa. Like Brian, whenever I'm packin' Koa, I just have to whip it out.

My performer will need a grass skirt cover now:

And here's something I made for my wife (a barrette) from a particularly interesting cut-off from Kauai to prove I'm no slouch in the shop either:

Marty, those are some great Pic's! Where is the one with Troy speeding away?
It would be awesome to get your hands one of the commercial ones they are cooking on..
Brian your handles are a piece of art.

One more shot of the Koa handle. I need to make a side table out of this stuff!

Very sharp!  I'd love a table out of that.

Very nice.  When my grills grow up I want them to look like that.

Hey marty, do you have a Koa connection? I am going to check the store near me, but they are pricey. I would love some exotic handles made from it.

Check with Brian, I think he scored a box of cutoffs recently. I am running low on my own stash, and won't get back to the islands for a while.

By the way, you're right Duke - Koa is not cheap. It shows up on ebay from time to time. Here's a current listing for example:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/CURLY-KOA-BOARD-LOT-13-1-2-X-3-X-1-002-/261159003642?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cce4a25fa

I can't say if Brian's box had any Koa, might have been a random collection of other "curly" woods. Not sure if any of the scraps were big enough for handles.

I have a box of Koa on the way, it wasn't real cheap.  I'll have to cut it to see what the pattern is like.  Am I starting a list of people who are in need of koa?  I know Duke is in line.  I'll keep everyone posted, I'll let you know when it arrives....

Thanks Marty and Zav, it would be understandable if you charged a little more for exotic woods.
