Title: Squirrel. Anybody eat that?
Post by: DTrainMike on June 11, 2015, 11:55:20 AM
So I got a squirrel problem. They be trashing my bird feeders. My slingshot arrives from Amazon tomorrow. If I actually hit and kill one of those little bastards, I figure I should do it some dignity and make a meal of'em.

Anybody got some info for me?

Tree Rat?

High heat to kill any bugs........2-zone, throw some nice wood chunks in there......

Tractor forum's usually got good stuff on things like this......marinate.......

http://www.mytractorforum.com/153-cookin-grillin-recipes-forum/286121-barbecue-squirrel-marinate.html

another approach.....

http://www.backwoodsbound.com/zsquir14.html

Are they big ones?

Try this:

If you want to try different approaches.......check "Squirrels Unlimited"..........

.......or, make them do the work.......

A Poem.....

Little Squirrel in the snow,

Fell from the tree and broke his toe,

I brought him inside to take off the chill,

And then I threw him on the grill

Wife is not keen on any of this. She actually looked mad when I mentioned it!  There are great big turkeys frequenting the yard. Can I sling shot one down if I say it was attacking the kids?

Any South Park fans out there?  As long as you yell "It's coming right for me!" before you shoot, your good to go.  (if you don't watch South Park, never mind)

You would have to hit it directly in the head . Wild Turkeys have been known to withstand blasts from 12 gauge shotguns at distance.

used to eat squirrel as a kid. My dad and I would go hunting and we'd eat our score for dinner.

I remember it being quite delicious, and easy to clean too.

I don't think your slingshot is going to kill a squirrel though.

Actually, yes. I'm a city boy at heart, but a friend talked me into floating a few years back (changed my life). An adjacent camp site was a bunch of Cajuns. They had been hunting all weekend long. A few stayed back during the float to make gumbo. After a day drinking beer on the river, delicious.

I don't know. Lots of folks seem to like to show off their kills online!  One guy got a rabbit.

I got a Trumark. I plan to make clay shot. Cause I'm cheap and i don't want to litter the yard will steel shot or marbles

Sorry I couldn't resist the Brick Tamelyn meme. I forgot to mention that I have had squirrel and it's not bad. My uncle did an "Ozark" themed Christmas dinner one year and we had that and rabbit and pheasant. Tasty Pheasants, Christmas presents.... I was 12. It was a great year.

I guess now I'm a bit nervous about getting one with some kind of disease. Is that a reasonable worry?

If it acts healthy and running normal take it and eat it, if its not leave it for another predator.

Why dont you shoot the birds instead? If you setup the feeders just right you can get a dozen with one 12ga.

That wrist rocket will do some damage...

I rolled my own clay shot. I had a shoot out yesterday with a greedy little bastard. Took about a dozen shots from 50 ft. He kept jumping up the branch and back down to the feeder when I reloaded. Finally tagged him. He fell out of the tree and ran into the bush!  The rush of combat!!!

My Grandpa and my Uncle were hunters. They'd bring home all kinds of game, including squirrel. My Grandma was a great cook, and always did their haul up right. I liked squirrel... haven't had it in years.

Mix cayenne pepper with your birdseed. The birds don't care but the squirrels hate it,

I see this is an old thread, but it's squirrel season right now!
I've only pan fried squirrel with basic seasonings. Never tried on the grill.

I live in Michigan.  Personally I have not had squirrel and probably never will.  I did have a neighbor years ago tell me that the city squirrels (Grand Rapids, MI) did not taste as good as the squirrels up in northern Michigan.

That's funny. Hope I never find out which is better.

+1 for country squirrels.  City squirrels are basically tree rats.  Dutch oven and some sauce maybe best way to grill.

I've had fried squirrel with milk gravy, and it was decent.

On a side note, a friend of mine once noted that if squirrels didn't have fluffy tails, they'd have been eradicated by now. A squirrel with a non-fluffy tail = an oversized rat.
