Title: Kettle Griddle
Post by: BBcue-Z on March 20, 2015, 01:44:26 PM
Has anyone seen or used this griddle on a Weber Kettle?
http://www.amazon.com/Stok-SIS7010-Grills-Griddle-Grilling/dp/B00COA76UG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426886693&sr=8-1&keywords=stok+mega+griddle
(http://i59.tinypic.com/301zdro.jpg)
The griddle itself is 19 inch in diameter and it sits on a wire rack
(http://i58.tinypic.com/107pfkp.jpg)
It’s made for Stok grills, but the description states that it fits most 22.5 Kettle style grills.
The material is Cast Iron, which is very promising and it weighs 23lbs, so it must be thick and heavy-duty.
I went ahead and ordered one anyway and will see how well it’ll work. I like the size of it and I figured worse case scenario, I can use it as a pizza stone. I like using cast iron in place of pizza stones that often crack and break. And the size is perfect for X-Large pizza :)

That looks nicer than the Manturion from Weber SA.

I don't think the Weber is CI and that is a nice piece if CI.

Wonder if it fits on the tabs, without a grid underneath.

I want one.

That looks like it would fit. As long as the outer frame is 21.5 it will fit like a glove

Just ordered one of these.

A little cheaper here, although I bought it from Amazon with free shipping.

They also have a pizza stone that appears to fit the same wire frame:

Congrats ClubChapin !!!
I can’t wait until I get mine and test it :)
I think they refer to this area for the Inset 10” pancake guide
(http://i59.tinypic.com/2ywua37.jpg)
The Pizza stone looks real nice and thick, but I think the CI griddle would double nicely as pizza stone.

The Griddle finally arrived!!
The grate fits perfectly on the kettle :)
I can already think of one additional use for the wire grate :) Kabob Skewers!!
Here is the flat side. It has a couple of rough spots, but a good seasoning should take care of that.
And the other side
(http://i58.tinypic.com/23h6dzd.jpg)
I like that I’ll be able to place the lid on during heating, which would lessen the initial heating time. This is a heavy and thick cast iron griddle and will require time to come up to temp. I also think it’ll make an excellent pizza stone replacement.
Can’t wait to season it and test it :)

I'm curious to hear your feedback on this. I actually found two of these at a Target store a few months ago. They had a sale on all the Stok products and I picked up the grates and some of the inserts. The large grill looked promising at first but the finish seemed really rough and the casting differences between the two examples was very obvious. Both were rough but the grille ridges on one of them were really wavy. I don't wanna crap on Stok products but I had to pop open multiples of everything I purchased that day to make sure the examples I got were usable.

Interesting.  I've been using a Lodge pizza pan:  http://www.amazon.com/Lodge-Pro-Logic-P14P3-Pizza-14-inch/dp/B0000E2V3X

The extra real estate would be nice, but my previous experience with Stok cast iron leaves me skeptical.

Seasoned the griddle yesterday and it took on the seasoning very well.
I first washed well, then coated lightly with vegetable oil. I then placed it in cold oven and turned up the temp to 475 degrees. Left it there for about 1.5 hours and turned off the oven and left it there until it was totally cool to touch, which took several hours.
I ended up very nice and slick coating and dark color. No cracking or any issues so far and all that left is an actual cooking session to see how it holds up…

Ready to go :)

It's porcelain coated, why would it benefit from seasoning?

It's not porcelain coated, just pain cast iron.

Ah, OK thanks. I assumed it was made like their regular grate system.

I received my griddle last week.  It is a nice hefty piece of iron.  The casting is crap.  It makes Lodge look like Griswold.  Lots of flaws.

I decided to grand it down before seasoning and using it for the first time.  Hit it with an 80 grit flap wheel on my angle grinder.  I suspect an 80 grit on an orbital sander may have worked too, maybe better.  120 on my palm sander did not work.

At any rate, grinding it down really helped smooth it out.

I then seasoned it with Flax oil on the kettle, then cooked with peanut oil.  brushed off after cook and seasoned with flax again.  It worked well and was nonstick.

Will post the cook in a separate thread.

Man, yours was really rough!
I had a couple of rough spots on mine that didn't take much effort to correct. I heard many inconsistency in the quality on those. You had the right tools to fix it though :)
Great work on that, now you can enjoy it for many years to come :)

It was pretty bad.  it is much smoother now, smoother than my Lodge CI (which isn't very smooth...)

It is very fun to use.

I have read the Stok Mega cast iron grindle is no longer available from Stok, any ideas on where you still buy them?  Thx John T.

I have one new in box, also the mega pizza stone. Shipping would probably be cost prohibitive though. It's pretty heavy. Now looking at it, I should probably take it out and use it. Nice real estate to make smash burgers!

If anyone wants both, they can have them for $100 plus shipping.

Where are these cooks pics?  Let's post them in this thread as well.
I too see that it's now unavailable.  That's too bad.  I've been waiting on something like this to come along.

@ClubChapin thanks for those links.  Wow, I really hope this pan comes back.  It would be a fun accessory to have.

I also weekly, during the warm months, make pancakes on it every weekend.

It's nice, I wish it was a larger diameter.  Honestly, any piece of CI works fine, just sitting on a grate.

I've also got one of these:
http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/flat-kettle-griddle/msg227268/#msg227268 (http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/flat-kettle-griddle/msg227268/#msg227268)

The size and rim are nice.  It does not perform nearly as well as CI.

What is that Weber one made of?  I've been searching for one of the vintage Weber full griddles (as many of us are), but just figured that's highly unlikely.  I've been hoping a nice alternative comes along.  Let me know if you wanna unload that Weber one since it doesn't "perform Nearly as well"!  ;) ;)

No, not getting rid of the weber.  It's nice, I'll use it some more.  It is really prone to hot spotting and drops temp too quickly when adding food.

The weber seems to be porcelain coated steel, just like the kettle.

I think they are still available.
