Title: Calling all Weber Q owners
Post by: pbe gummi bear on September 20, 2014, 05:58:15 PM
I have a Q220 on a stand and it's a great grill. It's portable and big enough for quick cooks where charcoal isn't an option but without the bulk and parts of a genesis. Anyone else like theirs?

Lawrence,

I think my Q200 is the perfect gasser for charcoal guys, If I am roasting something it is going on the Kamado or kettle but for quick and easy grilling sessions it is perfect.  The portability and the awesome cast iron grates are the icing on the cake.

Q100 here.  Same deal, awesome little grill.  Picked it up for next to nothing on CL.  I have mine hooked up to a big gas bottle and use it maybe twice a week. I also like to yank the cast iron grate and drop it on one of my kettles when I want that really nice sear.

Q200 (I think:-[ ) here! We carried this in our camper for a few years. Got rid of the camper but kept the grill.

Q 200 has done everything I have asked of it. And if you want some smokiness, just chuck a lump of apple or plum on the grill.

I have two, a Q320 and a Q120.
The Q320 is connected to Natural Gas and is my go to for quick mid week cookups it's also the only Weber BBQ I have bought new and was also the start of my obsession with weber products
The Q120, I like to take camping or to the park/picnics
The Q is a very versatile grill and apart from low and slow cooking there's not much you can't do with it. Most cooks are easily adaptable from the kettle to the Q as far as setting up for indirect cooking
It's also been webers biggest seller in OZ since it's release about 10yrs ago and has  won many awards for it's design.
It has a lot of similarities to a kettle as in it's easy to clean, pull apart and replace parts
And like a kettle is pretty much indestructible with it's alloy body and plastic tables and stands
I like the fact that Weber OZ is still innovating new accessories for the Q and only wish they would do the same for the kettle like they did in the 80's
I think the price point for a Q has really helped with sales too
The Q120 retails for $285
      Q220 retails for $385
      Q320 retails for $699
That probably seems expensive for you Yanks but it's well priced for the Aussie market

We have a Q120 that's used for quick cooking such as burger's, chicken breasts and especially fish.  The Q is really good for fish.  We have it on a large tank with a stainless braided adapter hose as squirrels will gnaw through the rubber adapter hoses.  Sometimes getting a kettle going is just too much effort relative to how long the cooking is going to take.

i use an original Q for warming up left overs or cooking burgers on the fly.

when i lived in a "no charcoal allowed" condo it was my only means of grilling.

so it got me through the worst six years of my life essentially.

news titbid.

the RED "Q" grills are exclusive to ACE Hardware.  Similar to how the orange kettles were exclusive to home depot.

stopped by there this morning for some snax.

Wow....that's a great selection of Weber products. My local Ace only has about one 36" shelf wide and maybe 3 shelves high.......and usually no charcoal grills except maybe a Smokey Joe and possibly a OTS or two on the floor.

the red q's were sexay for sure.  bought a new 22.5 grate with fold up sides, some supersized drip pans, a new sweep to test out for one of the 22's, grill cleaner and steel wool.  i don't see how modding would be required but i haven't been home to shove the new sweep in one or checked the threads for the mod yet.  been lazy.

it's the best stocked weber store near me that i've found.  they did have another crimson on the shelf so kevin should be able to try to match his lid to a bottom.

Ooh I like the red ones!!
The new models were released here about a month ago.. No colour though
What do you all think of the new design?
They seem to of gotten rid of the tool holders on the end of the tables... Why would they do that???
You need somewhere to hang your tongs/spatula

We retired in 2005, sold our house, and bought a motor coach in which we have lived full-time ever since. The first couple years we hauled around a blue 22" kettle.

As you can imagine, the blue 22 got to be a bit unwieldy with this lifestyle so we bought a Q to take with us on the road. Here are a few pics of some of the fun cooks since then.

This might have been the first cook in the new Q.

A friend of mines daughter ran into his huge stainless gasser after her graduation party this spring.  His wife found a Q320 at a yard sale for $40.  He said it will get him by until next summer when he buys a new bigger gasser of some sort.  I told him I wanted first dibs on the Q320 and would give him the $40 he had in it despite him using it until next summer.  He agreed.  I'm a good friend.  8)

Don't have one, but this will probably be my next CL quest as it would be portable and small for times when the kettle isn't practical cooking for one or two people.  For you owners/enthusiast are there any Q  models that you would stay away from? Or are they all pretty reliable with the main difference being size.

Personally I like the models with the high lid, thermometer and electronic igniter and side tables
These tend to be the Q120,220 and 320 models
As opposed to the Q100,200 and 300 models that have lower lid height, no thermometer and piezo igniter

Post by: weirleigh on September 26, 2014, 04:16:40 PM
Thanks Hogsy, I knew some had the thermometer and some didn't I didn't even realize there was a lid hight difference.  Not in a hurry but if I see one close by for sale I'll look for a 20 in the model number.

I have a Q200 and yes the lid is lower but I strictly use it for grilling, no roasting so it fits my needs perfect.

I am now a Q owner as well, I found a Q120 on CL the other day, this is a 2006/2007 Q120 so the only real difference between it and a Q100 is the fold out table.  It also came with a stand/cart, cover, a hose adapter for the full size propane tanks and two full size propane tanks one full one empty for $50.
It cleaned up really easy some of the paint is peeling on the back of the lid but all in all it is in good condition.
I used it last night to grill some vegetables while my kettle was busy with with the meat and it works great, it will not replace my kettle but definitely give the ability to do a quick cook without much trouble. I can always put in a thermometer if I feel I need it later like GregS.  Was going to hold out for one with the taller lid but I don't really see having too much trouble with this as is.

The only thing that was missing (didn't realize until I got home) was the catch pan underneath I used a shifted bread pan last night that would sit in the grove as long as i didn't try to move the grill.  I'll order a replacement, unless someone knows of something else that would fit the groves right.

Saw this on the web as well, if I was going to buy new I would consider it since it is the same price as a regular q-2200 but I don't think I would recommend mounting it to the tractor and grilling while you bush hog I just like the color option, like Dale's green lid .

I picked up one of these this summer. My dad and I both have JD toys so I had to get one. Shortly after I got mine there were a bunch of them came out on eBay and on Craig's List because there was a promotion through John Deere involving a free one with the purchase of a new garden tractor. I really like the color. It's a much brighter green (official John Deere green) than my other Q, which I'd describe as something closer to a 'Forest' green.

I ended up grabbing a Q300 last fall for $40 to keep me grilling through the winter and on days where time is short. I'll still fire ip the WSMs and kettles during the winter, but the Q is great when I just need to get it done.

Used it tonight for some quick chicken sandwiches. My wife was going to slice avocados and tomatoes while I was grilling. I was back inside with cooked chicken before she was done. Not to mention I love how easy it is to get cross-hatched grill marks on the CI.

I have a red Q3200, it is the best gas grill that I have ever used. The only downside is that since it is a Q the side tables and warming rack are too small, but the grilling performance is excellent due to the design. Ace was advertising the red as a limited edition but I doubt Weber will ever stop making the red version, it is the same as the other Q3200's except for the color of the hood.

OK so webertitus apparently can flow over into gas grills as well  ::) Just to be honest way back on 9/20/14 when this thread started the only thing I had similar to a gas grill would be the skeletal remains of an old char-broil that has not been used in years.  I still prefer charcoal don't want to give the wrong impression on that, but it is already getting darker sooner and the thought of having a q for fast week night grills was appealing.
As I had posted earlier I found an older q 120 on craig's list and paid $50 for the grill the cart and 2 regular sized propane tank.  So that's that I cleaned it up, grilled some chicken it came out great I was happy and done with the gas grills.  Then I went to the goodwill outlet (a place for people like me that can't afford the regular goodwill) and I saw a very dirty go anywhere grill.  I didn't get it then but couldn't sleep feeling I had failed the WKC by leaving a Weber behind even if it wasn't a kettle.  So the next day I went back and paid $2.11 for the go anywhere, now I am done I have a portable and an ultra-portable what else would you need.  Then Sunday evening I went on craig's list again just to look around and saw an ad for a free weber beckoning me to click on it.  The picture looked like another older q 120 like mine something I could always scavenge for parts if needed.  Emailed the giver awayer and it was still available they said I could have it if I wanted, jumped in the truck and drove 70 miles on a Sunday night to find it was a q 200, a very dirty q 200 full of crud but in very good shape.  It also came with the cart and a propane tank, I asked the guy a couple of times are you sure you just want to give it away?  Yes, they were moving and just wanted it gone and out of their hair today.  After cleaning it up it is in even better shape than the one I paid for, I am calling it quits now on craig's list gasers for a while I didn't know the disease could spill over into non kettle grills.
I am happy with them, I really haven't tried cooking on the go anywhere yet  the flavorizer bar was very rusty  as were the grates on all three grills, I cleaned all the rust off with vinegar and seasoning the flavorizer bar the same way I do cast iron.  I don't look for that to last on the bar as it sits right on the gas line but it will prevent more rust this winter when not in use and I don’t feel like getting a new one for a $2 dollar grill.
I have tested both q’s out, for normal stuff I actually prefer the smaller one but can see some ways for the 200 to come in handy as well.  I added cheap thermometers to both qs I am not sure what good they will do cooking but it did come in handy as far as looking across the yard to see the small gas bottle I was using was empty (it was almost empty when I started just wanted to see what I could get out of it).  Also when I got the q120 I ordered  the q light for around $10 because of some store credit I had I believe they are normally around $20 and I really like how that fits to the handle and only comes on when the lid is opened.
Below are some pictures of my new gaser family, this ended up being a long post but needed to share and outside of the WKC you only get strange looks when you say you just acquired three more grills you didn't need in a week.

Redhead Q120

And the Q200

Late to the party here, but I will chime in as another very satisfied Q owner. I have the Ace Hardware Redhead Q3200. I went through a slough of gas grills in the 80s and 90s, burning one out every couple years and never liking them even when new. I got fed up with gas cooking, bought a Weber Kettle and then a couple years later a Big Green Egg. All these years later in life, some evenings I want to move things along a little quicker, and I liked the looks of the Q design. I couldn't be happier with it. It gets really hot really fast and holds temperature very consistently. I did an 18 pound turkey over the holidays. It was the best turkey I've ever cooked, inside or out. I think a Q is a perfect complement to a Kettle for an outdoor kitchen. It cooks very similarly.

I have a Q220 that's about 7 years old. I have the stand and 20lb propane tank adapter hose. It was my primary grill in college and I've kept it mostly unused for the past couple of years. It's great for a tailgate or camping, but I would like to get a Smokey Joe or Go Anywhere.... The Q220 is just a tad big when space is tight or cooking for just 2 people.

For the first time I tried ribs today on the Q3200.  I used the weber trivet and a heat shield.  I had the main burner on its lowest setting, the center burner off,  and used a chunk of hickory to prop up the lid a little and was able to sustain a temp of 250.  No pics here but they looked as good as if they came off the kettle and tasted great.  This grill is really an excellent product, as I have posted before this grill could make me forget the kettle. I would only say that on the lowest setting the temp drifts up so you have to keep the lid open a half inch or so.  As for the weber trivet and heat shield, I could probably find a roasting grate in the kitchen and use aluminum foil instead and get the same results.

Is what you're calling the heat shield possibly a convection tray? Not sure if either that or the trivet is available in the U.S.

These are on Amazon, and also on the Weber site:

Weber 6564 Original Q Roast Rack for Grilling, Large
Weber 6562 Original Q Roasting Shields for Grilling

Any roasting rack and aluminum foil will work just as well, sorry if I was not clear.

From what I have seen online I get the impression that Q's are huge in the land down under.  I love my Q, I would never use it to roast or bake though, I have kettles and a Kamado for that.

Jack...glad to hear your success with ribs on the Q. I am going to do my next rack on the Q, just to see how they come out.

A couple of Q stories to add to this thread.

Customer service...I called Weber to ask how to stop my porcelain from chipping on my grates. I just had a couple little chips, and wanted to know how to keep it from spreading. Three days later, I had a brand new set of grates on my front porch.

Q Roasting Shields and Q Roasting rack...The quality of materials and welding on the roasting rack makes it one of my favorite grill accessories...across all my favorite brands and grills. I don't know what is different about this stainless, but it seems like nothing sticks to it. And for the shields, I guess I am just too lazy to fiddle with making do with foil when for about a buck Weber gives me one that secures itself to the grill, drains just the way the engineers want it to and goes straight to the trash when I'm done.

Griddle...I absolutely love the griddle for my Q. I use it for breakfast. I also brown meat surfaces on it, then transfer them to the grate side. One of my favorite uses for it is to make home fries while I am cooking burgers or brats over the grate.

Pellet tube...I bought a 6 inch pellet tube to add smoke to the Q. It does a very nice job. I just light the pellets, let them get started, blow them out, then set it on the solid part of the grate at the far left. Gave me just the right amount of smoke flavor on a whole chicken.

Like others have said, the Q is a very unique gas grill that cooks much more like a charcoal grill than any other I've tried. It's versatile, well made and extremely well supported. I only wish Weber would sell all the accessories here that they export to Europe and Australia.

Sounds like I need to get a Q. However, I already have a Weber Spirit for those quick dinners. What makes the Q better than a Spirit or Gebesis?

Imo the only thing the q does better than the full size gassers is the portability and compactness. I don't think you'll gain anything if you get a q to use exclusively in the yard.
Title: Re: Calling all Weber Q owners
Post by: jeffinsgf on April 25, 2015, 04:48:55 PM
My experience with other gassers is limited, but I think the Q gets hotter and gets there faster than other gas grills. I know my 3200 will get to 600+ in 6 or 7 minutes. My BIL has a late 90s Genesis, and though I have never checked...I don't think you could get it that hot, ever. I also think the round dome does something with the convection that you don't get with a square box lid. I know that when things get hot in there, the smoke shoots out both sides with velocity. I've never seen that with my BILs Genesis.

The Q is great for a second grill in the yard. You would not want to get rid of your gas grill with a Rotisserie and side burner. If you can only have one grill for the yard it may not be the best one for you.  When you look at the price of the Q's you find the cost of the smaller Q's along with the cost of a 20lb tank adapter hose and cart can get expensive, and then the price of the Q3200 does not seem so bad as it is set up for the 20lb tank and has a nice cart. What I found is that the Q3200 does heat up fast and hits a high temp. With the low BTU's it is efficient on gas.  Maybe it is the design, but you will find that when you start cooking on it you really like the way it grills and you find yourself using it instead of the expensive gas grill with the heavy duty steel rods that you already have.

Hi, after going back and forth on another thread about getting a gasser, I think I've been sold on a Q. One thing I was wondering is what type of small canisters do they take. I assumed they were the short fat green ones used by a lot of portable grills, but looking on amazon I saw a comment that said you have to use the thing blue ones used for torches. Is this right?

The Q1xxx and Q2xxx lines take the small bottles, but you can also purchase a hose to hook to a larger tank,  I highly recommend it.

I wouldn't say this purchase ended the need for a larger grill with a side burner (I put in some emails on craigslist for a few older genesis models :)). But I would say this grill fills a need I didn't even know I had  :P. I go on a lot of camping and fishing trips and my smokey joes and Jumbo Joe have served me very well, but after a day in the water or hiking, long cooks are out of the question and usually all you want is something that cooks fast so the weber Q is great for that.

That being said I have a work table that I use for cutting boards and trays next to my kettles. I could see this taking up residence on the table and becoming the weeknight cooker I've been looking for.

As for the comparison between this and the genesis, I really liked the build quality and the fact that it's cast aluminum.

Thanks! I didn't take any pictures but I broker her in with some burgers and chicken breasts for fajitas and was really impressed with how evenly it heats and how quick it gets up to temp. I want to head back to the ACE and get a griddle some time this week.

One question I have for you is, what's your preferred way of cleaning the griddle. I'm a little afraid of using a wire brush as it might scrape the seasoning off (maybe not :-\).
Title: Re: Calling all Weber Q owners

A wire brush will be fine.  I occasionally use crumpled up tin foil and tongs also.  Both work just fine.
Title: Re: Calling all Weber Q owners
Post by: jeffinsgf on June 01, 2015, 09:58:51 AM
AJ,

I use the griddle a lot. I clean it the same way I clean the cooking grid. Heat it up.  Brush with a Weber triangle wire brush. Wipe with a wet cotton towel.

The porcelain makes it different than a regular cast iron griddle or skillet. It doesn't "season" in the same way. If you've ever seen or owned a porcelain coated cast iron Dutch Oven, you know what I mean.

On the Q 3200 I tried making pizza today.  I used a 15 inch pizza stone and rested the stone on top on my two Weber charcoal baskets.  It fit perfectly.  By raising the stone up a few inches it keeps the bottom from burning and it gets the pizza close enough to the lid so that the top of the pizza cooks properly. Did not get pics but I would recommend this technique it worked great at about 450 degrees for about 12 minutes. You have to check on it at intervals so that you get it off the grill before it burns and to keep the temp from rising. I used the fresh Pizza Buddy dough from Walmart at $.88 a pack.  This was super convenient and the results were perfect.

I'm a new(er) Q2000 owner, and it has re-lit my appreciation for Weber products.

My wife and I were debating the idea of replacing our 5 burner charmglow gasser this year.  It is about 7-8 years old, and was in need of its 3rd set of tubes and deflector plates.  The last time I replaced them, the full kit set me back almost the price of a new grill.  This year, I was able to find a decent replacement set for $40.  So my dream of a new Summit grill on my deck went out the window.  I can't complain, though, the rest of the charmglow has held up pretty well for a $400 SS grill.

But we also camp a lot, and our boys are involved in sports that require a lot of weekends spent at sports complexes.  Both of us were getting tired of packing sandwiches in coolers, and spending $50-$100/day on concessions/fast food was simply out of the question for us.  After doing a fair amount of research, I chose the Q2000.  It had the right blend of size and portability for what we need.  (Unfortunately, I didn't do enough research, otherwise I probably would have gone for a red Ace model!).  We've been using it almost daily since we bought it 2 months ago.  We are a grilling family, we use our grills 3-5 nights a week, even in cold weather.  It has been a blast getting to know the Q, and finding out how versatile it is.

We've become a huge hit among the other parents during the sports tournaments.  They've become huge fans of us whenever they see us pull out the grill around lunch time.

On our camping trips recently, I rigged a smoker setup with it and smoked/roasted 2 whole chickens with it.  I also roasted some jalapenos for poppers, onions and garlic for spreading on bread, as well as the traditional burgers and dogs.  We're planning to pick up the griddle plate once our electric griddle we use with the camper has died.  (It doesn't have too much longer, either.)

I credit the Q with steering me back towards a charcoal kettle.  We've been batting around the idea of getting a smoker for a couple of years, now I think we'll just get a kettle and have that for a while as a versatile tool.

Edit:  I bought the 2000 model, I decided to save the extra $50 on what I thought I was only an inaccurate thermometer.  I didn't realize the lid was a different height.  I don't know if that is still true with the new 2000/2200 series (I assume yes) but I can confirm that hasn't slowed down the versatility for me.  I was able to easily fit two whole chickens under the lid very easily in a roasting pan.  I will get back to you guys once I get the weber roasting racks and try some ribs, too.

Great cookers , sear better than any other gasser I've used.

Here's a smoker setup I tried not too long ago on a couple of chickens.  Worked really well, except I put the chickens on too soon for the smoker box (under the left grate).  I needed to give the chips a little more time to burn down to the blue smoke.  They got some early white smoke, so some of the flavor was a little bitter on the skin.  But overall it worked out really well for a quick (oxymoron with smoking, I know) roast with some smoke flavor at a campout.

LaTuFu,

I bought the 6 inch A-Maze-N smoking tube for smoking. You put pellets in it, light them and then put the tube on the cooking grate. The reason I like this better is that you aren't disturbing the heat flow like you do when you put a packet on the burner. I've used it several times over the last few months, and it has exceeded my expectations. Great smoke ring on ribs and perfect flavor on ribs and chicken.

Browning on your chicken looks great!

Thanks for that suggestion.....those tubes (& maze things ) they make are great.....

You can also use the along with charcoal, to cold smoke, or like Mossy Mo that stops by often with good looking eats where he slow smokes with the tube then fires the heat way up for a finish sear.....and you're right, the chicken does look good !!!

Had a Q100 for about 8 years.  Used it frequently and found it quite useful.  Unfortunately I did not clean out the bottom or the grease tray for awhile.  On day I lit it, walked inside to get the food, and went out to see it on fire!!! Yes, it was a blaze!  The debris below the grate caught on fire and fell into the grease tray below.  I had to use a fire extinguisher.  I may get another if the price is right.

Cochise, I was able to get a  free Q 1200 from my credit card reward points. Was surprised to see Weber in the catalog.

I really want a Q for my sailboat, but craigslist sellers just won't go for my low ball offers like they do on charcoal kettles. I must have made like 15 offers so far in the past couple of months and have not even come close to nailing one down. Its driving me nuts!

Why don't you pay what they are asking?  Are they asking too much?

If I feel something is a fair price and I really want it and seller will not accept what I offer, I pay what they are asking and get the product.

new "Q" owner....Happy Fathers day to me. $50 CL find, never been used...can't wait to see what all the hub bub is about.
Seems like another quality product from Weber and another greenie in the barn.  8)

I have 2  Baby Q's (renamed Q 100's) and a Q 120.  They are my wife's domain for grilling vegetables.  We are quite a team every night preparing our meals.  In winter time, I move the Baby Q up on the front porch for out of the rain cooking. I have a a Weber always at the ready under the covered RV structure.  Prior to retirement, I did most of my cooking on the Q's during the week and the kettle on the weekends.   Since my retirement in 2005, all my cooking is on the charcoal kettles.

I just got a Q for free last week and I love it. I will always charcoal it, but this is a great little gasser. I have so far cooked a grill cheese, a tuna melt, and some hot dogs. All really good.

Can you clean the outside of a Q the same way as the kettle using #0000 steel wool and soapy water?

No. Unlike the kettles baked on porcelain enamel, the Q's are painted.   It would be like using steel wool on the painted surface of your vehicle.  Won't end well. I use a blue scrub pad with either Simple Green or Dawn soap.

Thank you very much! I will give it a shot.

Been a charcoal griller since I left for college when I was 18.  Not too long, just 6 years, but 100% of my grilling years.  Only nice grill I could afford, Weber of course.  Reluctantly bought a Q1200 last week so my wife could make chicken for lunch without having to start charcoal.  Pleasantly surprised with the quality and cook.  Looking forward to using it (sparingly) in the future.

Fire ban days are a reality in Australia, which means no "solid fuel" therefore, it's important to have a reliable gasser

Have a Q220 that I purchased new in 2012 with the cart and hose for a larger tank.   It is big enough but only has one burner so it is easy on the gas.  One 20lb tank will last months.   Love the cast aluminum and cast iron grate only problem I've had is replacing the burner last year.  It will hold 2-3 spatchcocked chickens so I have quit smoking chickens and prefer the 1 hour cook on the Q220

Recently picked up a NIB Q1000 on CL for half the retail price.  It will be kept in the camper and serve as a more portable grill. It is noticeably lighter than the Q220. Here it is in action on our deck table.   Was being lazy with the kids wanted to sit and grill wile watching tv. I use the 1lb cylinders on this one but have devised a way to refill them.  Maybe I'll make a post about it later.

Picked up a 2006 model Q200 on CL for the parents who were tired of their electric.  Paid $40 and it had the cart.  Someone had removed the regulator and replaced it with your standard hoses with regulator at the tank.  Won't take the 1lb Coleman propane bottles but works  great, they love it, and have no idea it is 11 years old.
