Some have already been following along with the developments of today but I've finally got some mostly cleaned up pics to share! "The Chief" still needs some vent polishing etc but this is more or less the shape it was in when I picked it up! Unfortunately no super cool story behind the grill even though I tried to pry some info from the seller. It was the 85yo owners daughter who was selling it and he wasn't there.
It seems the wheels may not be correct? but the weird thing is that the rest of it is so mint it seems odd they would swap out the wheels? Either way they are quite nice and will absolutely do until I confirm if they are legit or can find some originals!
I also snagged the offset red - may be able to get pics up tonight but more likely in the am.
Still can't believe this one worked out! The couple dings at the vent are essentially the only damage on the grill!

Man, you are on a roll. That thing is in great shape. Are the handles Weber? They look funny- too blocky.

Indeed.
The offset red joe is one of my top grails!
-
Wow! Thanks for all the nice comments guys.
I tried to downplay/fly the comment about snagging the red under the radar but apparently that didn't work so well ;) lol
Don't think the handle is Weber but that will be taken care of. Hmm... I bet a Zebrawood handle would look amazing! ;)
It's been a crazy long day and I am exhausted, plus the camera battery died so pics are going to have to wait until morning. I did just get to spend about an hour tinkering and cleaning up the SJ and can assure you it will be worth the wait!
-
dude do you have brian making you zebrawood handles!?!?
#jealous
I was just talking with some coworkers today about the amazing eucalyptus handles Brian made for me.
Do you have access to more zebrawood? I might be down for some zebra handles :)

That is amazing, dude! Great condition for a 44+ year old beauty.
You've put on a lot of kms / miles this year, eh?! Well worth it, though. :) :D

Yea, in a way... I travel down into WA state regularly so most of the time I combine trips and snag a grill while I'm already there or driving through. Let's me expand the area of search a little bit anyways! The local market is decent for newer Weber stuff but there is next to nothing in terms of vintage or anything even older than say 1985.
This trip (4 hours), and the one trip to Portland (Eternity) however were strictly for kettles :) I'd drive to Portland again for a grail but now that I'm older and wiser it would take something pretty darn special :)
-
There we go... handle problem solved and top vent and kettle interior all cleaned up!

Bottom vents, triangle and wheels finally completed. Once again thanks for all the help from the WKC on the wheels etc!
