Title: Gas assist added to Mesa Azul
Post by: zavod44 on October 01, 2012, 07:21:37 PM
I added a gas assist set up to Mesa Azul.  I had the burner tube, I bought the regulator from Weber and I got the igniter from Ebay.  At that point all I needed to do is drill a hole in the kettle.  I used a step drill and a Dremel sanding drum to get the oval shape of the hole.  Once I got the hole in I inserted the tube and marked the holes for the screws to attach the tube.  At that point I had to create a bracket to hold the igniter.  I found an aluminum angle.  I had to use two angles to hold everything the right way.  I riveted the two angles back to back.  I used a Dremel wire wheel to give the bracket a decorative look.

Now it gives me a little more versatility.  It has been working great....

What instead of just getting a Performer bowl?  I didn't have one, they were all platinums!

I was referring to buying the parts from multiple sources.
Not sure how much a regulator for these costs.
You can also buy an adaptor hose to use a full size propane tank.
And for those looking for ideas of other mods, a Weber Go Anywhere regulator will ft on the end of the Performer tube.  The tube and bracket could easily be added to just about anything.

I got a bowl from AJ, I got the second bowl from you Troy, and then I came across another platinum.  Then I had enough to convert everything to blue....and Mesa Azul was born.

Mesa Azul is muy bien!  You should be very proud.

I was also wondering about the bottom shelf... what is it made out of?  In the photo, it looks like stone.

It is covered with that BBQ pad stuff.  It comes in round or kind of a rectangle.  It is meant to go under your grill.  I just cut it up so it fit under the table.  I figured it could take the heat.  I have seen it at Ace and Home Depot.

Are you the personality type that's gonna have to paint that propane cylinder blue now?

No. I'll be okay with the cylinders that come from the store.  I was however thinking of staining the table legs blue!.   The whole blue table started solely because I wanted something that was smooth and easy to wipe off.  I was just at Lowes looking at tile and I saw the blue tiles and figured I would go bold.  Then just to break up the pattern I got the yellow flowered tiles.  The table originally had black grill that I put brackets on to hold them in the table.  I wasn't thrilled with those brackets and I wanted to get grills with the brackets already attached from Weber, aka performer or platinum.  AJ and Troy had blues ones and the wheels started turning.  That's why it became Mesa Azul.  Just kind of worked out that way.....
