I thought this thread might be fun. Check in here if you currently own a Weber kettle with cooking grate larger than 27" diameter. ;D Please add your pics too. I won't add you until you reply in the thread, except for Brian and his old ranch since I feel he should be #1 on this list. :)

Ranch Fever at the WKC! Great thread idea L. Here's The Animal I just got from Brian. Without his help I doubt I ever would have found an old one like this. I love how it's been passed around and that it made history at the famous WKC meets especially the one held at Jeff's house. I can't find a picture of it all together so if anyone else knows of one please share it. I am also posting Obi Wan's as being the oldest known ranch.

me too. I absolutely have no place to put one, no where near the $$ for one and can't think of any cook I'd do that I'd need it, but all these threads recently have me wondering if I could somehow make it work.
Here is mine. I acquired this last spring off of CL, and it looked really rough even though it hadn't been used much.

Thanks Lawrence, I never get tired of seeing those old photos from the legendary meet. Golly, I also love seeing that incredible rotisserie you guys have out there. It's a real work of art and puts out some fine bbq I can tell.
Somewhere there is a rich guy buying my future ranch! He will show it off by cooking 90 bratwursts for all of his neighbors. He will utilize 25 lbs of Briqs to do this. Many fancy beers will be consumed. Then, in the revelry of the successful gathering he will be caught with the wife of the mayor in the basement.
The ensuing divorce will force the estate sale from which I will purchase the grand cooker.
Many PROPER cooks will follow; there will be rejoicing..... And pictures.

I second that case of RK envy. Baby steps. First a 26" (got one) . Later, The ranch. Nice RK's guys!

It's weird but the thing that stands out from this thread for me is just how big a 22.5" WSM is. ;D

Did anyone notice how many chimneys are needed to light up these beasts?
Not sure what others use, but I used a full SJ-sized chimney to start up a low-and-slow cook....

I was surprised how well it cleaned up. It almost looked new once I was done with the restore. I think this kettle was submerged under water during Irene, but now you would never know it.

Here is the full stable - actually two of them are unusable - the first two I bought back in 2009. Can't seem to throw them away. As others have mentioned, you can light it up in a similar fashion to a WSM for low and slow (minion). Only need about 1/2 - 2/3 full chimney to get them going. Charcoal usage isn't that bad. You do have take care, as this thing will breathe like a dragon if you don't watch the vent settings.

I could probably use one of these sooner or later.......95 pounds of pork butts......or 750 'Turds ?
Miller, you could probably cut up that burnt out one and make a nice charcoal ring for a SJ.

I found my Ranch after it was posted at the TVWBB about 2.5 years ago. It was put there almost immediately and I was wishy washy about buying it for about 10 min. I ended up getting it 20 min after the listing went up for $125 buy it now, in Chicago of all places. There weren't as many people in Chicago then as there are now. That certainly wouldn't have lasted that long nowadays. My wife and I had a funny interchange about whether to buy it or not at the time. It went from check out this steal of a deal, to maybe we should buy it, to are we actually seriously considering buying it, to oh no, what have we done?!?!? good times!
Excellent cooks Philly! I just have to ask, is that a blue tiled kamado I peek through the top vent holes? ???

Here's my Ranch. I restored it, painting it copper, which has held up well for almost a year now. It was in bad shape before I got it. Sadly, I've only used it three times, but every time I've used it for a crowd, it's a show stopper.

Damn! I got to get me a ranch!
Got one!
Picked it up today. Seller said he bought it "about 5 yrs ago". Sold it because it was hardly used. I figure that won't change with the new owner. :)
Pretty good shape overall but not without a little surface bowl rust and crazing.
I feel simultaneously giddy, yet humbled. :o

Welcome, from another newbie.
Picked up this Ranch Kettle last summer and finally got around to giving it a solid deep cleaning. This project took a lot longer than I expected, I have done my share of razor scraping 22's but this was a bitch. Started by totally disassembling, then scraping, scrubbing, touch-up painting, and finally reassembling with all new stainless steel hardware. It turned out great and looks practically brand new with the Zav wood and Uncle Al whitewalls.

@firedude5015 that is one badass RK. Congrats!
I got my RK in 2009 I believe, in a trade. Big Green Egg was a sponsor of KCBS and the FBA and had agreed to give away a large BGE and table to the Grand Champions of select BBQ contests across the country. I was very fortunate to win 3 or 4 of them. The first one I kept and cooked on, the next ones I sold. I wasn't impressed with the size to weight and fragility of the BGE. A fellow competitor had just bought a RK for his mother, and she wasn't happy with it. We talked about it and agreed to a straight up trade - my BGE and table for the RK - and I've been cooking on it ever since. It's probably my favorite to cook on. I love all the room and often cook for no more than 3 on it. I get to take it for demos and have used it for a Kingsford demo at the Daytona Firecracker 400 with then Kingsford driver Marcos Ambrose, Bass Pro for a KCBS demo, and borrowed one to do a Snake River Farms ribeye demo at the King of the Smoker in LaQuinta CA. Like someone said, they are show stoppers.

@crowderjd Yes, it is, and it's also quite impressive that someone from NV would have known that! Needless to say, it took the previous owner and I a couple of months to agree on it's "actual" value vs her
"Well, a new one is $1300" approach. :o

Qr,
I'd seriously advise doing a practice cook first before doing the festival. Working an RK is a bit different than a regular kettle.

Was in pretty excellent shape other than some scratches and minor surface rust to the frame in those few spots. The ash bowl also had a couple chips on the bottom with one having surface rust. A front wheel was also broken. All things were minor/cosmetic and it is relatively new shape. The seller said he used it half a dozen times and it shows. I think most of the wear/tear on it was just him having it in his shop or leaving it outside occasionally.
Anyone know of some good aftermarket casters?
Any good advice on touch up paint for the frame (brand/color/type)? Should I just use some extra fine steel whole to get the areas clear of rust and then touch up? I know the high heat paint is best for the kettle if needed, but the actual kettle is solid as can be.

As for front casters, I bought mine at OSH before they went out of business.. really any hardware store should have them. Just plain stemmed office chair casters. I took the whole frame to a local powder coated and had the whole thing done. Will probably do it with my second one too. Enjoy!

I'd just hit the frame with Rustoleym high heat ultra. It has a slight gloss sheen that matches pretty well. It's what I use to touch up Weber gasser frames

Has that been repainted? I don't think I have ever seen/heard of a white one. If the white is original you have something kind of unique.
It is one of 2 original, done by weber for a winery here in australia.

Dang that is pretty cool. Hopefully the lettering comes off easy unless it is kinda cool for you having the winery name.
The one i got was fading a little bit so i hit it with a razor scraper and it came of.

Nice. I am taking my frame to the father in law this weekend to make some welding improvements to mine. We are going to weld on caps on the tops of the framing and maybe add on some support for bigger tires and axle. After that I plan on test fitting everything and sending it off to be sand blasted and powder coated.
Going to stay original black with the frame or go with something different? Red or white seem like they would be pretty cool.
Sounds good. A different colour would make it look cool for sure. I just went with the original black again as its a white grill so its broken up.

To bbqmiller: Nice work. Well done!
To all: I'm a new Rancher and just loving the way this allows a person to do creative grilling, both direct and offset. It's so far superior to the small kettles I can't describe it. My first problem was getting a charcoal basket (or two) to allow for indirect cooking while maximizing my charcoal use. The ones I've found on-line were, I thought, prohibitively expensive especially after dropping $1,400 on the Rancher. So, found this gent's website on YouTube and recommend it highly. If the link doesn't make it onto the website just search for Ry's weld free charcoal basket:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4mxUUE9OjI
It's his own creation that he calls a "no weld charcoal basket". My cost for a sheet of expanded metal was about $17.00 and that was my only cost. I've made a large one (why I'm not sure) and two smaller ones for indirect cooks. I've only used the large basket so far and it's a dream. Just shake it out after it has cooled and you've got a ready supply of broken in briquettes to reuse. I love his idea. I'll try to include a photograph.
My question to the group is this: how do you clean the ashes out of your kettle? The stainless cooking grill is heavy enough that it's a little tricky to move about. Then you've got the charcoal grill underneath as well. They're not the most user friendly equipment to move around. Still, once you have removed those two grill layers you've got this round bottomed kettle where your ashes reside. What's a good method to collect and dispose of those ashes please? Clearly the three air vents are not intended to be used for ash removal. I'm sure there's a great system out there, I'd just appreciate hearing about it.
Loving my Rancher. HD
Sorry, I haven't yet figured out a way to attach photographs to a "reply" post. Also, can't seem to find a way to create a post on a new topic. Any of you old timers have advice? Thanks! HD
I hadn't thought of it that much really. One way would be to just remove both grates and brush it into the vent holes or over the side. Another way might be to use a shop vac without a filter. Just better be dang sure all the ashes aren't lit.

Looks good @Bluegrass Boiler. What is on the menu for the first big cook?
I just had my first big cook on the Ranch last Sunday. Did 60 burgers and 64 hotdogs. I used two heaping chimneys of charcoal and dumped it on the back half of the charcoal grate. Seared about 20 to 25 burgers on the direct side, would spin the grate around to indirect to flip or cook indirect. If a few looked a little not done I threw them back on direct. Hot dogs only took a few minutes and if you cook a lot of them putting them on the grates to where they roll easy works best. I had enough heat to do 3 runs of burgers and the hotdogs but you could always add coal ontop of lit to keep it going. I purchased two of these ash rakes that have hooks for grates to spin the grate. You could get by with just one if you don't have a heavy load on the grate.
BIGSUNNY Ash Rake for Grills,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NBTXYZQ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I moved my grill like you are going to do in the back of my truck. Some tips I would have for easy clean up would be to bring a metal bucket to throw still burning ash or spent ash into so the grill can cool down to clean out. It is really hard to do without pulling the grates. If they are still warm a good set of grill gloves or welding gloves is really helpful. If you want to make clean up easy you could try a pan or foil on the indirect side of the charcoal grate and also on the ash pan. It is crazy just how much uncooked fat accumulates. On the direct side it just burns off.
I recently got some wood handles for mine and can't wait to get them set up right with the modded metal straps.
Good luck with game day!

Got my RC last June. It's a complete love affair. I used a Big Green Egg for five years but never really grew to like it. I've been a Weber Kettle man since 1973. Been through a variety of models and had a love affair with each. This RC is the best of the best. It is so heavy and commercial feeling I can't imagine it ever having a problem. Speaking of heavy, I find that cleaning the ashes out is something of a chore. Both the cooking grill and the charcoal grill are heavy and somewhat unwieldy to remove. Does anyone have ideas on how to simplify this little chore?
I would recommend using foil or a pan on the non hot zone for cooking as it will keep a lot of the fat and grease from falling into the grill and being difficult to clean. Most everything over the charcoal side will just burn up on contact. As for the ash I will allow the coals to completely go out and then look to clean the ash. Unfortunately the top grate is really hard to clean around. I will usually flip up the side grates, pick it up by the center section and set it aside. After that you can either kind of broom the ash into the holes to fall below or take a shop vac to suck them out. If you use a shop vac do it OUTSIDE or you will be coughing up ash for a few days. You might be able to leave the charcoal grate in if you aren't super picky about your cleaning, but that is up to you.

Happy New Year to all.
2019 was good to me re: Weber kettle acquisitions. I managed to get my hands on another SSP, 26'er and Ranch.
No pics at the moment.
Once I clean her up I will post pics.
Anyone know if the older style cooking grate with the smaller hinged grate was stainless steel?
I believe some if the small hinge range grates were SS, but it depends on the year. If you want to know for sure then do the magnet test. If it is not magnetic or only slightly magnetic it is likely SS.

I smoked a 42lb pig on 12/31/20 with a WRC roti setup.
So this was a 19kg/40lbs dressed pig.
Only just fit with snout and butt and ears touching the lid of ranch.
Injected all thicker parts with a homemade apple juice, brown sugar, butter and maple syrup injection.
Didn't hit this one with any smoke as i wanted the super crispy skin.
Had full baskets either side of pig running 450f+ for first 1.5hrs to really set the skin crackle good.
Then split the side baskets in half again so majority of coals and heat were near the thicker parts of pig like head and butt.
Then wrapped belly section in foil to deflect the heat so not to over cook the ribs and belly section.
Kettle temp was round 300f for another 4hrs till internal temp of 180f was reached.
Taken off and rested for half-1hr and pulled. Was fantastic.
Will be doing another asap.
