Picked this up a few weeks back and finally got around to posting the clean-up story.

Secured and ready for the ride home. The bottom right shows part of the LP tank. Got it filled locally for something like $3.25

Polished the ash ring & pan. Just ol' fashioned techniques. 150 grit sandpaper up through 400 grit. Then 0000 steel wool followed by Mothers Mag polish. Took just over an hour, but I've done it before so I knew the steps/process.

I tossed the original grate as it was getting pretty rough. This was 3 cooks in and I'm in love with this Performer. (have 2 blueys also)

Wow that is absolutely stunning.
The only bummer was the lid handle was bolted on. Very little damage around the mounting points so it was a clean break. I just used SS hardware and put it back together. Oh well, shit happens. Just need a Zavod handle set on her now. :D
Looks Awesome! Excellent work!
VERY nice job! What's that finished entree on the grille?
So what are the "BMAN Polishing Service" rates these days? Nice work! 8)
Wow. I have to try the polishing technique. That is amazing!!!! Either that or as Aj said where do I send my stuff for the Bman polish? Nice work.
That came out fabulous. I am going to do your method on my ash cans and bowls........they sparkle
Wow that's a really nice specimen. Kudos!
My '98 Blue SS is where I first tried polishing the ash ring.

Beautiful! Nice work.

The Wonder Of Red!!!!
Wow Chad, that turned out Fing awesome!!! Nice job polishing the ash catcher and retainer! Did they get out of round at all from putting pressure on them during that step process?
Super work!
Man you made that look brand new and rejuvenated again! Nice restore!
Thanks fellas....
Jeff - I use a 1/4 sheet palm sander to do most of the sanding work. I hold the ash pan just over the edge of the work bench and rotate it as I 'sand' it. Doesn't take much pressure and the pan is pretty rigid. The ash ring is harder to hold the way, so I just hold it in my hands. Left hand inside the ring & right hand on the sander. Zero pressure applied to get it out of round.
The sander leaves swirl marks, but once you work through 400 grit sandpaper it's quite smooth. Still has (smooth) swirl marks, but that's where the 0000 steel wool comes in. Going in one direction, it only takes a few minutes with the steel wool to erase all the sander swirl marks and get this puppy shining.
Excellent! Gonna have to try that on mine. I have a random orbit sander that might help reduce swirl. I'll let you all know.
Incredible restore, Bman. That grill looks awesome.
Nice work B man 8)
Welcome to the red SS club ;D
Very nice, i have a sander so i will give this a try!
Wow that looks great. I have 4 or 5 of the ash cans/rings. Not sure I am up for that much work.
Great job, Bman, as always. Thanks for sharing your tips.
How did I miss this thread? Thta looks super Bman.
Did you ever tell us about the side dish you cooked? Is that tots?
Oh, so were using power tools now! Gonna try that for sure.. 8)
Wow! Nice work on the ash can and ring. Is it hard to keep it looking like that?

Shit, I missed Ken's question about the dish.
Pretty simple, but pretty awesome for a work-night-all-in-one meal w/ leftovers. :)
I start with a disposable Hefty Veggie pan w/ perforated bottom. "Sprinkle" in 1-1.5 pounds of raw ground beef. Season the beef w/ your favorites from the spice rack. On top of the beef we dump a drained can of green beans & corn. Wifey doesn't like onions/peppers/mushrooms, but I think they would be great as the next layer. On top of that is basic tater tots. Then a can of cream-of-whatever soup gets spread over the tater tots. Toss on the grill indirect (300ish) for an hour or so with your choice of smoke wood.
Actually, wife is heading to the beach for a week with her family. Pretty sure I'll add the onion/shroom/pepper and feast on this all week. :)
