Title: Jumbo Joe Cooks A Few Years Back
Post by: bamakettles on April 24, 2026, 06:52:20 AM
Took the JJ and GA to the beach a few years back.... came across these pics in my planning for this year's trips and thought I'd share.  We had a great place by the pool to cook which came in handy on rainy days as I recall.  The pork butt cook came during a complete washout day and I only got a pic when it went on but I remember the covered area saving the day and the cook.  We also did a tri tip and fresh fish from our friends that live there.

Cheers and happy weekend!

Few more pics I found from 2 years ago.... different beach house, cooking area was below the house so pics are a bit dark... still maybe interesting to you all.

Cheers

This looks very similar to the place we were at with the kids and grandkids over spring break at Gulf Shores, AL. Concrete parking and patio area under the house and deck above with a storeroom. Stairs came down on the beach side and a path out to the water. They had an 18 inch kettle provided so I didn't need to take anything along. My plan was for a JJ and GA just like you. This is where that table really proves its worth. I'll find one someday.

Sounds like a very nice place you and family had Anthony.  Also a plus that a grill was provided!  I don't always count on that - and have rarely found one that was up to task when provided.  I do prefer to be poolside with beach view when cooking if possible (when on vacation) since we don't have that at home.  We can all be together and enjoy the process and fun that way.  Can't wait for a couple of weeklong beach getaways this summer/fall.

I wasn't sure what "Weber" grill was provided but took the chance. Turned out it wasn't in terrible shape. They had a grill brush out there with it and grilling tools in the kitchen. Just had to buy a bag of charcoal and lighter cubes. It cleaned up well after heating it up and cooked the fish just fine. Did some shrimp as well. Hard to beat fresh seafood when you come from Iowa. Daughter found the place and it was a little tight for 11 of us but it worked out fine and we all had a good time. Had fun watching the dolphins each morning and a cold cocktail tasted good in the sunshine.

Looks like a really nice trip. Love a little holiday with the grills. Although I love my GAs so much (especially fitting everything inside), The JJ really seems the better grill for a family of 4+. The combination of both is just perfection!

Love my outrider but it's that bit bulkier so it generally stays at home.

Luckily I have a JJ arriving Monday!

Agree, and I've never been able really enjoy cooking on a GA... Seems I'm always looking for more room, and the lack of having a guard around the grates makes cooking hot dogs challenging.  ; )  SNS has a charcoal basket and small drip n griddle that works perfectly with the JJ which always comes with us on trips.  And the SS grate I have for it is a worthy upgrade if you can find one... KillaGrilla was the guy that made them and he has since retired.

I'm sure you'll enjoy yours!

Ps. Yeah the GA is too small really for more than 2. I only really use mine for a steak when the Mrs is out and the kids are asleep. My little treat to me

I have managed to do burgers for 15 hungry lads on a stag weekend across 2 GA's but it was a struggle!
