Title: Picked up a C Code off the curb

Haven't been on here in a while, but I saw this C code one street over and the itch came roaring back. This thing is in decent shape but a little TLC will really bring it back to life. There are a couple of pops on the lid and a little bit of crazing but overall looks good. It also has charcoal rails!

I was carrying it home and the back legs came off (leg sockets are still in good shape). I need help with rust removal for the triangle (which was installed upside down), any suggestions for stains or oil for the handles, bringing the legs back to their original shine, and how to re-secure the back legs. Any help you guys can give me is greatly appreciated.

I know there are a lot of articles about what I've mentioned, but I'm having trouble finding them on the Tapatalk app.

Great find!

Legs: steel wool

These explain it better than I can!

Legs:

Lid and bowl:

For handles I just use wet n dry paper flat on a table and rub the handle against it, you can get the flat and sharp lines back that way. I start on 400 grit and then go up till I'm happy. Stain is a preference, I like teak oil on the oldies

Hope this helps

Also for the loose legs, just need to remove them and pry the indent out of the leg with a screwdriver or something, then when you push it back it Ittl be tight. Most secure is a small self tapper through the leg socket into the leg, if you're not too fussed about staying purist!

Nice. You also scored a free set of hooks for hanging your utensils & two out of three parts of the table support for the Weber Sidekick. The missing third part is pretty easy to make & I know a suggested way to do it is on here. Save them in case you someone selling the table by itself as a cutting board (I've run across that before) or in case you decide to fabricate one or modify something existing on your own.

Nice find!  I've had luck removing triangle rust with a dremel brass brush, just wear protective clothing and eye protection as the little wires will fling off when polishing too fast.  For the legs as stated above, 0000 steel wool and give them a little squeeze at the top with channel locks to get them out of round and they should stay in the sockets a little better.  I've tried a self tapping screw and it didn't help for my application at the time.  Take your time and enjoy the process.

Cheers

Thank you all! Scrubbed out the inside of the bowl today. There's some surface rust in there (I'm not sure it's ever been cleaned) but it hasn't eaten through the metal so I'll apply some oil after getting as much of the rust out as I can. I started restoring the legs and triangle today as well.

I also broke down and ordered 3 Zavod orange and black handles that I couldnt resist. I'll post pics once I get it all put back together.

Update:
After cleaning up the lid vent with some steel wool I discovered that this is actually a G code from 1985, not a C.

My daughter requested I paint the triangle orange, as my wife and I have successfully brainwashed her into believing Oklahoma State is the best college ever. I think it turned out nice, and matches the family.

It seems to have a slight lean that's tough to tell from the pictures. The front of the grill is a little higher than the back. I'm not sure how to fix it, but my wife swears she can't tell so the possibility exists that I'm the crazy one.

The legs cleaned up relatively well. They aren't perfect but much better than before. I was able to get new 1 inch black leg caps at ACE, and they also hooked me up with a couple of new axle caps they had in lying around in the back. Here's some photos, I also added a pic of the zavod44 handles I ordered so you all can see the vision. Thank you all for your help. I'll add a pic with the new handles when they come in. I need to tackle the rust on the one touch handle as well.

Looking awesome! Only one I found kerbside here was a pretty boring modern 18" black. Took it home anyway  lol

Nice cleanup!  Can't beat the price for sure.... blends in well with the other kettles, looking forward to seeing the final result with new handles.

Cheers

You and your wife are obviously very intelligent people and it's clear your daughter
has benefited from your outstanding parenting. So glad she understands the wisdom of your examples.
Go Pokes!  ;D

The kettle is looking great! I considered orange handles at one time but never followed through.
Yours turned out awesome. Would not have thought to paint the triangle but it will be perfect with the handles.

I think I can see the lean you mentioned. Is it possible the front leg is just not pushed all the way into the
socket? Or maybe you could remove it and just shave a little off of the top end?

This is a great project, don't forget to post more pics when it's finished!

zavod44 handles came in yesterday! And let me tell you, the pictures don't do it justice. These things are ORANGE (which I love, but that's because my Alma mater brain washes you into thinking every thing should be orange. I know it's not for everyone).

This was a fun restore project. I still need to fix a couple of things on it, but for now I think it looks pretty good.
