1 or 2? I feel 1 is more aesthetically pleasing whereas 2 is more ergonomically sensible as I use a slide aside and like gripping the handle that way. Ps. Sorry about the feet. Wrong forum

I am anal so I would do it like picture #1. I think the other way (#2) would annoy me. I checked on my 22" and 26" kettles and both have the thermometer 180° to the vent.
Agreed Babekyu BUT! There was an era where Weber did this...

Otherwise I wouldn't give it a second thought, it would def be #1
The thing that annoys me is the handle front to back, I like it left to right (with the exception of my old master touch with handle thermometer). I've got arthritis and grabbing it horizontally and sliding it sideways into the slide-a-side is much less grief on the wrist.
Anyway it's too late now

I'm afraid I'd rather have a more accurate (& calibratable) thermometer.
I use a TempSpike, but i like lid thermometers too, mainly just to look at tbh

I prefer 2 for looks. That's a sharp looking bezel!
Personally, I thing dome thermometers are useless for the most part.
I base that on where they are located.
The proper temperature is way off... usually.
The lid vent will generally give you a better reading. JM2¢

Yeah I agree, complete honesty, I just like the jazzy look of it in this case haha, I generally use my dual thermospike thingy majiggy in the meat+ambient which has always seen me through pretty well

To be fair.... Seems pretty accurate where it is!

Nice. I upgraded to a re -calibrateed dial type when I discovered my Weber factory was way, way off when checked against other thermometers. It was the unit, not the position. The new unit reads within 10 degrees of both my probe in the flue & my IR remote so I cal it good.
Looking good, 1 was more aesthetically pleasing, what you did is more functional.

Agree, now that I've done it and cooked on it, I'm v happy with my choice! Thanks all for the input

I put one more closer to grate level as opposed to the top of the lid. They both get used; it just depends on what I am cooking. About the position relative to the vent, I feel if you are going to smoke more than grill, that the 180 degree position would be more beneficial.
