Title: Early Father’s Day gift. Weber kettle griddle insert.
Post by: getlego on June 13, 2025, 01:44:57 AM
I was sitting on my porch having my after dinner coffee and my wife said I should just give this to you early because you probably saw it on the ring doorbell. I can think of lots of ideas for this but does anyone have one ? Looking for tips on using one.

Congratulations Walter, that's a great gift that you'll love to use.  I can think of a few....

-Smash Burgers
-Seared Salmon / Cod / Scallops / Shrimp
-Fried Rice
-Steak / Chicken / Onions / Peppers for Fajitas
-Pulled Pork Carnitas
-Breakfast of all kinds
-Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
-Patty Melts
-Hash Browns
-Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches
-Veggies - We like squash and zucchini

I'm sure there's more - basically anything on a diner type menu that uses a flat top.

Have fun and Happy Father's Day!

And I just re-read your post..... I don't have that particular one, but some others that are similar.  Maybe others can chime in on use and care for that particular model.  I know my carbon steel model rusts very easily.  I think the Weber version may have a coating on it that helps combat that.

Enjoy and let us know how it works for you.

Thank you sir,

I love the idea of patty melts. Done right, I love those. Funny story, I used to work at a printing press when I was young. It was the dirtiest and most filthy job I ever had. I was the new guy and they thought they were picking on me by sending me out to get lunch. I knew it was a great escape for some fresh air. I went and picked up lunch for the entire crew and there was this huge guy named Mike who was the pressman and had a large red beard.  Everyone was happy with lunch but Mike spiked his sandwich on the floor and yelled son of a bitch they forgot the meat ! It was one the best experiences of my life. I hope he's still around and would love to see him. He took me to the bar when I turned 21. Good time man. I will be 60 in December.

I purchased and received one not too long ago but haven't used it yet.  My first two cooks on it are going to be breakfast and smashed burgers. I've been holding off because I don't have some of the required accessories like spatulas, water bottles and maybe an infrared thermometer (my opinion).

The manual states that it has a special rust resistant finish applied to the metal surface, and comes pre-seasoned from Weber, so it isn't necessary to do anything like that before the first cook.  It also says that you can do it if you want, and it contains instructions for doing so.  In those instructions, it also says that it should be seasoned after every 2 or 3 cooks to keep it in good condition.

What a great story and memory!  I can imagine he was not pleased to get a grilled cheese while everyone else enjoyed a patty melt.  Ah memories......

I forgot to mention I hurt my lower back doing a remodel on our closet. I haven't even had a chance to open the box because the thing is pretty heavy. I saw somewhere Weber says not to use the lid with it or it could damage the griddle. They have a YT video and I think it said to use four pounds of charcoal and a small drip pan. Seems like a lot of charcoal to me. I might try a charcoal ring or something to create a dual zone setup. Ah well I'll have to wait a bit or get an assistant until my back heals up. I do need to get some accessories also like the large spatulas.

A great story. I too starting working at a print press when I was young - 1976. Still at it today, nearly 50 years later. Seems like there is always a guy with a large red beard. Wonderful prank getting him a grilled cheese. Hope your back heals up quickly so you can start grilling on your new toy.

Yes, it says all of that in the instruction manual that comes with the griddle.  It says to use 4 lbs./about 75 briquettes just to get it started.  That equates to about 3/4 of a chimney.  Then more, depending if you're doing a high or medium temperature cook.  I'm sure you'll read all of that once you're back on your feet (which hopefully is soon) and open the box.....And yes, it is quite heavy for what it is.

I had a change of plans regarding my first cook.  I went to Walmart yesterday and bought those accessories that I didn't have, then I came home and cooked up a pack of bacon.  I feel like it came out pretty good for my first time.  My son is coming over for Fathers Day today, so I hope to use some of that bacon on smashed burgers for lunch.
