Title: 98 EZ code Red mist
Post by: Tommie on May 19, 2025, 01:27:26 PM
Bagged this today, it's been on gumtree for 3 months, but was a bit far for me to bother and wasn't sure on condition. Anyhow I've really had an urge for a red 57(sorry, centimeters and Celsius over here!), and figured, whatever the condition, it would make a nice beater for £40

My friend was heading down near to this to pick up a green 47 and had space on the van, so I reached out to the lady and she said she'd had no interest at all, and was laughing at
how far my friend was travelling to get it for me (4hr round trip)

Anyway, some rim damage, more than I'd hoped for (or she had mentioned) but I am confident I can tart those up with some raptor red enamel and then a mist of black. I may do the whole rim just to make it uniform.

Apart from what you see in this pic, it's in very good condition on the lid and bowl. Not even got the usual rust around the handle.  I'm very happy with it

The inside is grotty as hell, I can confidently say it has never ever been cleaned! Sweepers are shot, handles have rotted. But it's all part of the fun

Will send some more pics when I get time to start the clean up. May not be for a couple of weeks. Got some bits on order... watch this space!

That'll clean up beautifully, Tommy.
The rim rash is just age spots (like I'm getting on my hands). 😃
And that's a great friend you have!

Yeah, we look out for each other! I'm not totally against patina tbh, I just enjoy the refurb a little too much!

My friend gave me a handle gauge he had knocking about, and fitted new handles

Mixed a bit of red and black 500c raptor enamel to take the eye off the rim rash

Added HC ash catcher, zebra wood handles and damper covers, new blades, cast iron grate and a "bbqplus" tight mesh stainless charcoal grate.

Stick a fork in 'er... she's done

Beautiful transformation! Now, will you cook on it - or just look at it?  ;)

Thanks! This will be cooked on, I want interaction with it, the "cute" 47's, GA's, and SJ's are for display only lol

Wow ! ! !   That is one beautiful grill you've got there.

I really like the addition of the Handle Gauge and that grill grate.  Nice finishing touches !

Grate job on touching up the rim-rash - looks like the paint mix is a great match.  I've used this paint to touch up the rim on a red 22 special edition that got dinged up and it matched and held up really well - several years and a couple hundred cooks I'm guessing.  Haven't heard of the raptor paints before, but will keep them in mind if I need to touch up any red kettles in the future.

Good to have other options so thanks! Raptor is just caliper paint too so probably the same deal, takes around 900f. Mixed it with a little black hammerite to get the darker shade for the mist
