Title: Original Weber wishing well discovered
Post by: Blacky924 on November 19, 2023, 03:00:24 PM
I've unearthed an absolute beauty last week. A massive grail for me and I'd assume a few others also. This is the first ever documented discovery of a Late 60s to early 70s WISHING WELL.  A grill that was rumoured to have only been made as a prototype. This appeared in catalogs for two consecutive years from 1969 to 1970 and was offered in 4 colours; red, black, avacado and coppermist; black disappearing as an option in the second year. Some have questioned the practicality of the design but I think it's an awesome piece of backyard furniture.

It doesn't look like much at the moment but My Plan is to restore this to its former glory. Previous owners had clad around the base of the well with bricks and it's been reinforced around the vertical roof support members over the years. It's definately seen better days. The black tabbed kettle disappeared somewhere between 2018 and now and was trashed by the owners. Redwood will be replaced where required, reinforcement removed as well as a handle and crank fabricated and cedar shingles replaced. can't wait to get started on this project.

Thankyou to the people who have helped me discover this and who are helping with dismantling and removal. It's must be a pretty cool feeling to be the first people to lay eyes on an original wishing well

More pictures and details to come, before during and after restoration.

It's rumoured that one exists in Atlanta GA. No confirmation with pics from what I've seen. Would be pretty cool to see.

Hi all, just thought I would provide an update on the well... it has now been carefully removed from its original home in IL and restoration has commenced. So thankful to the agent who has made all of this possible. You are a true legend. Thankyou.

Hoping to have the restoration complete by end of January so I will keep you updated for those interested and will provide a detailed description of the process and what was involved.

For those that are interested in it's progress, the Well has arrived on Aussie shores and I've managed to strap up the slats to the lower barrel and install the hardware for the daisy vent access hatches. The original inner circular support for ash pan will remain in its untouched condition to help tell the story of this beauty. Can you believe that there are and were no nails holding those slats or pieces together.

Looking forward to now assembling the roof and getting the cado grill sitting in this beast.

Getting there amazing how good the stripped back original redwood ties in nicely with the reclaimed redwood fabricated pieces

It's now at home and will be hauled into the yard when I want to get it warm for a cook. Just waiting on the crank handle assembly to be fabricated and she's ready to go. So happy with how it's turned out. Once it's complete, for anyone interested, I will do a full walkthrough video on how it operates and will credit some awesome people that were involved in this project.

FINALLY! The one and only 1970 Wishing Well salvaged from Villa Park, Chicago IL is finished. Such a crazy concept from Weber. An awesome buddy Joseph Radings custom fabricated the crank handle for me which was the final piece to this Beauty that made it functional. By functional I mean working, I'm not so sure that it's practically functional though 🤣

An awesome piece that I'm grateful to have found and I can't wait to cook on this when I find some time to move it to the deck one weekend 🤣 for now I will enjoy it in the living room. The chain chews through the rattle can paint on the winding rod so I will get that powdercoated black soon for more durability. Hope you guys enjoy seeing how it works.

I'm so nervous about the 55 year of old timber handle holding the weight of the lid
I will try and work out how to post a video of it in action
