I was visiting my dad today and going through some old photo albums and found a rare picture of his Weber gas kettle at the house I grew up in in Elmhurst, Illinois. Circa 1974. He bought it at the Post exchange at Glenview Naval Air Station when he was in the Marine Corps reserve. That grill followed us to Indiana in the 80s and was eventually replaced with a red head first gen Genesis in the late 80s. Lots of great meals got cooked on that gas kettle. Between it and the Genesis, I probably got my love of grilled food. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230625/91648b6a97460a4f86163eea8396adb9.jpg)

I assume both the kettle and Genesis are long gone?

My dad gave them away to younger families in our neighborhood when he upgraded. He has a Genesis Silver B that's about 20 years old now. I just cooked on it yesterday with him.

Love the photo! Thanks for sharing
What a beautiful memory and the fact that you still get to share your love of the grill with him is even better.

Love all this ,thanks for sharing the memories. I wish I had pics of my dad cooking. The only early memories I have are of him cooking on one of those round grills with no lid. He worked for Standard Oil (Amaco) so he loved his lighter fluid. I still like that smell but I never use it. Those grills also came with the half warming hood with a rotisserie. We had one of those for a while.

That is what started it all for as well. Those grills didn't last long and it seemed like we would switch back and forth between the ones with the center pole raising/lowering the grill grate and the ones that had the three tabs with cutouts at different levels.
Yeah, no one had chimneys, but I do remember one neighbor who modified an old coffee can to act as one . . .

I love it!
