Title: How to keep Jumbo Joe charcoal grate from slipping?
Post by: leeharvey418 on December 20, 2021, 01:03:23 PM
I'm using one Weber charcoal basket, and my charcoal grate keeps trying to slide out from under it. I thought about putting a counter weight on the opposite side, but it seems like that would just make it capsize the other way when the charcoal burns out. Anybody got sny bright ideas?

The Mini D&G and SnS Basket are on my wish list, but I was hoping for something a little cheaper as a solution.

How about using wing nuts on the legs' hardware, positioned on the inside of the bowl and oriented horizontally to support the charcoal grate.

I use one basket and foil on the indirect side. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211221/de6db8a6b33e7648ec6a1538994339c6.jpg)
I wrap the the foil up the side of the basket to block the radiant heat.  This keeps things in place for me.

Are you by chance using a Smokey Joe grate?

Nope. The way the charcoal grate sits in a JJ, it's on smooth enamel, well away from the fasteners.

Do you wrap the foil under the charcoal grate? I thought that might help. And no, it's an unplated charcoal grate intended for an 18" grill.

The only thing I can think of would be to get some thin gauge tie wire wrap around one of those bolts at the bottom of the bowl then wrap around the farthest bar of the food grate. Hope that helps.
