I picked up my first ever WSM in 18". Put it together and I have a bare run of lump in it now to get the new funk out of it. It has an ash tray....cool beans. Now I ask, what is the purpose of the ash tray when there is no hole in the bottom unit for the ash to exit? Did Weber forget something on my bottom kettle?
Kinda odd...figure I'd ask the pro's here first. There wasn't a center screw for the handle so I have to contact Weber anyway. Figure 2 birds 1 stone if I can!
If I'm correct after you cook/before the next, you just take it apart and just dump/clean out, that bottom where the ash is...

Heat shield/deflector. Protects your deck/concrete.
Makes sense! Design coulda been a lot better than the "ash pan" look. But I don't care much as I've heard nothing but positives from those who use the WSM. First cook tomorrow! Pork loin.

The exposed ash tray you are talking about is it the one the connects to the legs?
If so that is a heat protector to protect wood decks or composite decks .

Yes, I see it is a heat sheild. Thank you!
