I was in the Sam's Club in Dayton, OH yesterday, and found a pallet of Member's Mark (Sam's store brand) briquettes. Judging by the picture on the bag, they're made by Royal Oak. I tried the Googles, and found a review that states that somebody thinks they're re-branded RO Chef's Select. Even if they're just plain-jane RO, the price was right at $17 for 40 lbs, so I grabbed a pack.
Has anybody tried them? If they really are comparable to Chef's Select, I'll have to keep an eye out and stock up this summer.

We only have Kingford blue and match light here. Costco will have KF pro on sale next week.
Curiously, a web search for the charcoal gives a link to the Sam's Club site, but I can't find a store that shows it as available. Even the store where I actually bought it says it isn't there.
That's rebranded chef select. It's very close to Weber in performance. All oak and hickory hardwood.

I purchased 80lbs of Members's Mark briquettes on Friday from Sam's club.
I used 20lbs over the weekend. It burns clean, no foul smell and no issues lighting. It's better than B&B briquettes IMO
I've never cooked with Weber or RO chef select briquettes, so I can't compare them to MM.
I'll be buying 400 pounds this week. It's a great value for $.46 a pound.

I wanted to see whether I had really gotten a great deal on top-notch charcoal. I got sample briquettes of Kingsford Pro, Member's Mark, Gordon Food Service (also made by RO), and Weber. The GFS and MM briquettes were pretty much identically sized, but the GFS seemed much harder and heavier. Putting them on the kitchen scale confirmed my impression - the MM briquette weighed 35 g, while the GFS weighed 50 g. I'll confirm when I get a chance to burn both of them, but I'd expect the GFS to last a lot longer due to being denser. The K-Pro weighed 22 g, and the Weber was fluttering between 41 & 42 g, despite being noticeably the largest of the group. The Weber wasn't as crumbly as the MM, but it wasn't as shiny as the GFS, either.
