Title: Uninvited visitor to my backyard
Post by: michaelmilitello on May 31, 2019, 06:48:23 AM
Last night as I'm lighting a chimney to get dinner started, I noticed something funny by one our pine trees about 15 feet from our patio.   This is what I found:

My backyard is quite wooded so critters, including snakes, are not uncommon.  However, I've never seen one mid-meal or so close to the house. My wife went demanded that I "take care of it."   There were some expletives with that request and it didn't involve mere relocation of said serpent to the woods.  My pork tenderloins had to wait.....

Unfortunately for the snake, a few whacks if a shovel interrupted his meal as quickly as he interrupted my grilling.

Hope your grilling was less eventful last night!

Not sure what is was.  It had no rattle.   Most likely poisonous.  Either way not welcome in my yard!

Man I saw that picture and thought you were out west. Then I looked at your location and saw you're in Plainfield. That's not cool at all. I'm down the road in Brownsburg. I don't like snakes.

There are some experienced people out there with the knowledge on how to correctly prepare squirrels and snakes into a meal. I for one am not one of those people. I heard it's some good eatin' tho!

So, the snake wasn't bothering you at all, but you decided to kill it? Do I have this right?

Unfortunately, yes.  I have small children playing often in my backyard as well as dogs, including a rather petite one favored by my wife.   My wife does in home childcare.  The snake's presence was certainly bothering her,, and I'm not certain the moms of the children she cares for would appreciate it 15 feet from the house.

that was my reaction as well...didn't comment on it, but see the follow up about why that action was taken.

OP, perhaps look into what you can do to make your yard unfriendly to snakes so no more have to die needlessly?

That is wild. I'm not far away and I never see snakes in my yard.

I have ran across a rattle snake in brown county even though nobody believes me.

I lived most my life in the middle of rattlesnack country...Kamloops, BC, Canada. and that said, I've never seen a rattler and my dad has only seen 2.

they are quite a bit more common in the Okanagan than the Thompson Nicola though...there are several bites every year in the Okanagan. golfers annoying snakes on the courses and getting bitten. :P

I really wanted to post that picture to the no explanation necessary thread but didn't want to steal your thunder.  Haha.  I can honestly say that is the first time I have seen a squirrel go that way.
