Two 18 lb bags for $8.88. Not a bad deal. Never used them before. Always liked the RO lump so I decided to give it a try. Has anyone tried this?

I tried it last weekend. I think it is the best deal in charcoal at the moment at $4.44 per bag.
It's a little smokey when you light it (but not bad...smells nice). Overall it's comparable (if not better) to Royal Oak Classic (red bag). I think it get's a little hotter than RO Classic, but not as hot as the RO All Natural.
It's a winner!
I used it this weekend and am very pleased.
8lbs pork butt
26er
Snake 2x2 60%around
Roasting pan under pork with 64oz of Boiling water to help start the temp.
Chunks of apple wood on the 1st 3rd of the snake and 10 lit coals before the wood chunks.
Bottom vent 1/2 closed top vent 1/4 open
To temp of 225 at 2:15am ~60 degrees outside
I used old spent coals as a bed for the lit coals and to fill the space between the snake and water pan.
Full on rain storm from 3:30 til 5:30
Temp outside drops to 50 grill drops to 185 to 195
Hits 210 by 6am
I sleep til 9am grill at 230 pork is doing work.
Stayed between 220 and 240 until 11am when pork was at 165. Wrapped and opened the bottom vent and top vent half open. Grill jumps to 280-300and sticks there. Still only at 180 at 12:30. I added ten coals right on the end of the snake. (what was left anyway) Temp went to 320 and pork hit 195 at 130. Rested til 2:15 and it was amazing.
I was worried about constant Temps before the sheets of rain started. If I would have done a 75% snake I probably wouldn't have needed to add coal.
Seems like I could have ran a bit hotter with a 3x2 snake and a few more hot coals at the start. I didn't touch the vents even with the rain until I wanted to raise the temp and wrap the meat. I. Don't usually put water in the roasting pan but I knew the storm was possible and wanted to get to temp quick and have a heat sync during. Usually it's just empty with foil over.
So far I am happy with the cheap charcoal deal.

No idea, this was my 1st Royal oak cook.
I just bought a 2 pack because the ''experts'' on FB sais it was junk or shitty. Did a controlled test in a JJ with a extension(Da Boner) no food. KB snake 1/4 the way around 2x1 with 8 started in chimney.
62 ambient started @94
10 min mark 150
13m 167
22m 191
46m 250*
1 hour 297
1 hour5 min 302 open top vent all the way
1 h 25 min 302
1h 35 m 296
2h 290
3hours & 15m 211
Royal oak , note ambient 72
2x0 snake started same way.
started temp at 110
2min mark 125
5 min 164
8m 191
18m 208
22m 225
25m 235
37m 245
46m 257*
53m 267
1hour 5 min 275
1h 16m 277
1h 25m 263
1h 57m 267
2h 21m 259
2h 35m 258
3h 1m 227
3h 20m 203
Conclusion, royal oak started quicker in the chimney and I think it burned hotter for using 1/3 less charcoal. We will see how it works when cooking. Not junk or shitty imo because I got a 2 pack for $7.99.
