I'm about to replace grates on my 22" WSM. I got it used and it was definitely neglected. I cook on it very seldom right now and don't want to replace grates just for Florida humidity to eat them up.
So, can I season them with some PAM and a cooker full of fatty meats?
I wipe mine done with vegetable oil and run them in my gasser on high heat for 1/2 an hour. I spin it and do the other side.
Never had any luck seasoning nickel plated grates on any cooker.
Best thing I ever did was to convert to SS as I replaced a grate or rebuilt a cooker.

Spend the extra cash on stainless. I don't have that many grills so i replaced all cooking & charcoal grates to stainless. Even got rid of the cast iron grates.
Finding a lower WSM cooking grate may be difficult. Know of a source?

Try cleaning them lightly with a brush and put them in a garbage bag inside the garage, or closet. Dry with no extra oil or spices.

I was able to find regular grates here. For the top grate I could get the gourmet system stainless for top but still need bottom.
Edit: gourmet grate still appears to be plated albeit thicker rods.

Perhaps I can store the entire smoker better since it's used infrequently; close vents, large yard waste trash bag, classic accessories cover.

Thank you, I am waiting for an estimate from Mark. He suggested the 20.63" grate would work whereas the stock grate is 20.75".
That's just over 1/10" inch in overall diameter. I don't think it'll make too much difference.
FWIW, on an 18 WSM, a standard size grate will kind of fit on the bottom, but will rest on the bolts slightly above where it is supposed to be. If memory serves, you have to tilt it somewhat to clear another set of bolts a bit higher up on the strips bolted to the body that hold the water pan & grates. I don't know if the same is true for the 22, but you might try it out with the grates you have on hand if you otherwise cannot get one that is quite the right size.
