Title: Lechon Baboy (Filipino for roast pig)
Post by: Cellar2ful on December 30, 2018, 09:47:45 AM

I along with @Heyjude , had the pleasure of attending a pig roast at long time WKC member @argentflame house.  The pig was 56 lbs.

You can tell this was not the first pig these guys had done.  They had a foil tray already prepared for the pig to lay on.  It doubled as a drip tray while the pig was carried into the house on the spit.  It looked like a royal procession going into the house but was a well oiled and planned procedure.

@argentflame with the finished lechon baboy.  The roasted pig and other dishes were amazing.

The grill appeared to be commercially made for specifically roasting pigs or whole animals such as lambs or goats. It was made of pretty heavy gauge steel and the lid was insulated so well you could actually touch the outside of the lid and hold your hand on it without burning yourself. Pretty cool grill.

If that's not the last supper, I don't know what is! Nice to see some vintage WKCers showin' 'em how it's done. Nice to see that pup guarding the hog!

I didn't realize how "vintage" the other grillfellas were. Once you mentioned it Marty,  I did a little research via the WKC stats.

argentflame - WKC member #612

Heyjude - WKC member #4

What puts it into perspective is I am WKC member #12139

Those brings back old memories when i was 8-9 years old. My dad used to make lechon for special occasions or holidays and me, my brothers or other children relatives are expected to take turn manually turning the spit.  Now i need to go ask my older sister  for my vintage photos at the helm rotating the lechon spit.

I am blessed to have a lot of Pacific Island friends.  This was at a friends birthday party earlier this year.  They had two hand turned pigs roasted over charcoal.  It was required that everyone at the party took their turn at the hand crank.  It was hot that day so it was a rare occasion that I was drinking beer.

I really like it! I have a bit different equipment but getting the same nice results. First a piglet with approx. 18 lbs. The other one was a real beast with 71 lbs
