Title: Reseason Cast Iron on the Kettle
Post by: vwengguy on November 17, 2018, 08:43:26 AM
I really wasn't planning on doing a video or even thinking about it but when I saw how good it was going I had to grab the phone...
I had my 10.25" lodge skillet cleaned and lightly sanded to smooth out the bottom just a little bit. Nothing crazy like a full blown polish like some people do. I then wanted to give it a nice base coat seasoning with some fresh linseed oil and I had the idea of trying it in the JJ out side to keep the smoke out of the house. I picked the JJ because the amount of coals will be closer to the iron and might give a better results.
Oh Ja Baby! That worked super and was way faster than in the oven!
If anyone wants a better description of exactly how I did it.. just let me know and I'll do a full step by step video.
Thanks for looking! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUm5BrGOGic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUm5BrGOGic)

That looks incredible!  Maybe a dumb question but I thought linseed oil was for wood and not edible?

Google to the rescue. So it's the same as flaxseed oil I guess.

That is amazing! I'd like to know how you did it. I can never seem to season my 12" lodge skillet right :/

I'll start ASAP and get a new video made.
I may have to buy another skillet to make a good video ;-) .. I could always use another one.
Here is a shot of the 3 pans I did and another Lodge pan that has seen almost 2 years of service. The one on the right is what I thought was black and seasoned... the ones I just did look like they are painted. I will make some eggs and bacon in the morning and report back with how it cooks.

What type of sandpaper did you use?

Yes, I'd also love to learn more about your sanding/polishing method. The cooking surface on the lodge CI is pretty rough these days.

I use what ever oil i have on hand usually seasime oil and i also use them when do burgers or greasy meats. I have a really good non stick on one, good enough to fry eggs and  not break a yoke

It looks really nice but... I have a bit different point of view on the CI tools. For me these are cookers not lookers and the "worse" it looks the better it cooks. The dirty patina is making the cooks on CI so tasty. That's why I'm re-seasonig my skillets, griddles and Dutch ovens but they are never so shiny afterwards as I'm not sanding them just to not loose the great taste.

That's a great idea, @vwengguy
I had to do the same thing when I restored this monster DO .
It would not fit in the oven when it came time to re-season...

@vwengguy if you are looking for another lodge skillet. Check out the buffalo nickel design.  It is one of my favorites.
