The new shovel that weber sells for the WSM works well for a RK too. I use this small hand broom instead of scraping the shovel across the bottom of the grill. I have always used this shovel for brushing ash into the ash bucket on my kettles. Fits easily into the charcoal bin on my performer.

I've been meaning to get one of those for my wood stove. Other than for an RK I mainly just use a small brush, lift and dump into a trash/ash can.
