Title: Orange and Black Speckled Weber Bros 18 (pic heavy)
Post by: saxart on April 14, 2018, 09:37:01 AM
It seems I have come across a true "1 of 1" Weber Bros 18" kettle.  Part of this thread is a show and tell of sorts, but more importantly a request for some info and possible history.  I am very honored to have this kettle.  Here we go....

Here is a shot of the lid of the kettle the day I first saw it in person.  At this point I knew it was something special.

(http://i.imgur.com/gDJtxOX.jpg) (https://imgur.com/gDJtxOX)

Here is a shot of the kettle and lid out in the sunlight.   The color of this one can be described as "bright burnt orange", kind of a persimmon color.  The finish has a bumpy texture, very similar to the texture of a spatter finish you would see on drywall.   It's not paint, but porcelain like all of our kettles.

(http://i.imgur.com/UC3fEfQ.jpg) (https://imgur.com/UC3fEfQ)

A few days later it was cleaned up.  The grill only came as a bowl and lid.  No legs or grates.  Having said that, it didn't appear to be cooked on much at all, and must have been stored inside as the lid vent rivet was rust free.   The kettle and lid was cleaned up using my favorite 1/4 laundry detergent and 3/4 water cleaning technique.  (more on that later)  Here are some "cleaned up" shots of the lid and bowl:

(http://i.imgur.com/u9kFQLk.jpg) (https://imgur.com/u9kFQLk)

Being that this grill is a Weber Bros, and has the early "welded pipe" leg sockets, it was begging for an ash-pan triangle.  A local metal-man was found who could bend up a custom triangle out of 14ga bare steel.  I welded up the corners as well as the front leg "tab" and axle straps on the bottom.

Once the pan was fabricated, it was time to choose a paint color.  A forum member was able to help by providing this pic of one in original paint.

Finally, the grill was assembled.

I would like to thank a few forum members for your help.  (You know who you are)  Without your assist, this build would not have been possible!

If you have ANY info about a grill like this, please inform us.  This kettle is truly an honor to own and have worked on!

OMG! When you messaged me with the triangle question, it was an understatement when you said you had come across a special kettle.  You just made a whole bunch of guys (me included) jealous. One thing for sure, you just made it virtually impossible for me to have a complete collection of 18" MBH's.  (lol)  Congratulations Art.

Oh and given that the 18 came out in 1956, this beauty has got to be a 1956-57 date range. Given that it's WBMW Chicago stamped.

You've just given us all hope that the really cool stuff is out there, just waiting to find us. One of a kind is an understatement. Congrats, and pay no attention to the offers you get for it - from anyone. I mean it. Might want to insure it though - $20K seems about right to me.

Now, what the hell do we call this finish? Kind of reminds me of an active volcano - how about Kilauea?

I bought my first Wood Dale several years ago from a retired fellow by the name of Don. Don was an accountant and one of his clients in the 1950s and early 1960s was Weber Brothers Metal Works. Don spent quite a bit of time at the facility.

Don told me in the early years of kettle producing there was a lot of experimenting (porcelain coated legs, ash pans,  utility pans, triangles, unique custom lids and bowls, multi color combos to the "splatter grills").  At the time this info was passed to me, many people discounted it as a "foggy memory". However, over the past few years everything he told me has been proven true.

You mentioned you only bought a lid and a bowl. I do know that Weber made a very limited number of "splatter grill" Travelers. I think its at least a 75% chance this was originally THE ELUSIVE CUSTOM
TRAVELER...

Step right up and don't be shy
Because you will not believe your eyes
She's right here behind the glass
And you're gonna like her
'Cause she's got class
You can look inside another world
You get to talk to a pretty grill
She's everything you dream about
But don't fall in love

She's a beauty
She's one in a million grills
She's a beauty
Why would I lie?
Why would I lie?

You can say anything you like
But you can't touch the merchandise
She'll give you every penny's worth
But it will cost you a dollar first
You can step outside your little world
You can talk to a pretty grill
She's everything you dream about
But don't fall in love

She's a beauty
She's one in a million grills
One in a million grills
Why would I lie?
Why would I lie?

Thanks for all of the thoughts guys.  I'm honored to have this kettle, and blown away that there are still kettle colors out there which we haven't yet seen.

As far as the back story, unfortunately there isn't much to say.  This kettle came from central Minnesota.  The guy who had it was "just getting rid of someone else's junk" to quote him.  He had no attachment to it and didn't know any history on it.  He didn't have any legs or wheels for it.  I'd love to hear about any research someone has on these old 18's.  (Craig, thanks for the confirmation on the '56-57 timeline, that's what I had come to as well!)

Before commencing with the build, I did do some research on wheel and triangle color.  A few of the 50's era brochures that were found showed it could have originally came with white wheels and/or an aluminum ash-pan/triangle.  Here are some snaps from a Weber Bros era brochure:

(http://i.imgur.com/ORi3aQt.jpg) (https://imgur.com/ORi3aQt)

(http://i.imgur.com/KGivZDr.jpg) (https://imgur.com/KGivZDr)

Some minor mock-ups with those finishes we done, but ultimately the gold pan and red wheels looked best with the lady-bug orange color of the kettle.   A good friend and fellow forum member helped sourcing the wheels and choosing the rose-gold paint used on the pan.   Is it a correct build?   We probably will never know.

There is talk of this kettle possibly being a "Traveler".  Research before the build couldn't find anything definitive.  The leg sockets do line up such that the bowl handles are oriented correctly, so it was built as a standard kettle with wheels and triangle.

Here are my questions:
1) How does a kettle from the mid-1950's survive in such a clean/unused state?
2) Who owned this kettle and how did it get to the rural countryside of MN?
3) How did a kettle get produced with a color and texturized finish we've never seen before?
4) Why is there no talk of this color in any brochures even though there are custom colors shown?

OK I just realized why the texture finish looks somewhat familiar; it's the same that's on the old speckled SJs. It wasn't obvious to me until just now as I walked past my speckled. So Weber dabbled in trying out that texture on larger grills. Or did they do it on the larger one first, then take it to the SJ? Weren't the first SJs solid black with no texture? Anyway, I would be surprised if there aren't more out there. I really love the color on your find.

@saxart  -   You might think about changing the subject title to this thread.  It is such a rare, never seen before kettle, it needs to have a title that could be searched for in the future.  In a year from now, no one will be able to find the thread with the title "Request For Info.(pic heavy).  Maybe something like Red and Black Custom Kettle?

Good idea!  I just changed the title to "Orange and Black Speckled"

Rub-
This texture is much more pronounced than any of the speckled SJs I've seen in person.  It's a very "textured" surface if you run your hand over it.  The drywall in our house has a similar "splatter" texture.

We got a rare mid-April snow storm this weekend.  Some parts of the state got over 20" of snow.  This morning we had some beautiful sunlight so I thought to take some pics.  Here's a teaser...   ;D

@Cellar2ful

Thanks for posting this.  I'm so happy to see another one of these surface.   Funny how this one was in Northern Wisc, and the one I have came from North Central Minn.  Probably less than a 2-hour drive from each other.  I wonder if this part of the country was a test area or something?

On a side note, when mine surfaced someone had said that it was probably a "Traveler" so I had set it up incorrectly (it didn't come with legs or a triangle) with wheels and a triangle pan.  They also said that because of it's age I should have painted the wheels white rather than red.  I guess this grill puts those thoughts to bed.   8)

Harris-
Thanks for replying.  The kettle you pictured has some very UNIQUE looking bowl handles.  Because of that I'm thinking it's possibly a pre-production kettle?  (That would also explain the "traveler" legs as it's an easy way to make it look complete.)  Or with those handles is it possible that maybe it's a 22"??

I guess I'm more inclined to trust a photo of a real "in the flesh" grill than a pic of what looks like a pre-production unit, but that's just me.

I'm pretty certain the one with the legs is nothing really special as my dad has two like them up in the attic from his days as a salesman.  Last time I looked at them, they didn't even say Weber anywhere on them.  Just some really nice somewhat knockoffs.
