Captjoe gave me the idea. I save some of my paper towels that I wipe the remaining oil or fat out of my cast iron skillets and I fold them and put them in a coffee can with lid. I take one or two out and use to start a chimney. I leave them folded when I light. They really work great and burn hot. I started a chimney last night with used coal on the bottom and fresh on top. Usually you want it the other way around. It fired up those used coals fast and flame peaked through the top in 5 minutes. It works really well and I'm not wasting paper towel as much.

I use unopened bills, they come every month in the mail and they are perfect LOL

I do the same thing except I keep a roll of cheap towels and veg. Oil out in the performers bin. Haven't bought starter cubes for quite some time.

With this method do you end up with paper towel ash or does it all burn off?

It burns up almost completely. Much better than newspaper.

I tear a paper towel in two, crumple each into a ball, and put two teaspoons of salad oil on each piece. I put both at the bottom of a pile or at the beginning of a snake. The reason I use two halfs is that they can light more than one area at a time. If it's a damp day, I microwave the towel after crumpling for 1 minute to completely dry it out. DON'T microwave after putting the oil on!

I forgot to mention, thanks @HoosierKettle for the good idea. I may try that with rendered (water removed) turkey fat. I cook allot of turkey.

I do this too but I bring a squirt bottle of oil from inside.

This is all that was left under the chimney last night. I used a couple bacon grease soaked paper towels and they lit the chimney in record time.

Interesting technique. I switched from using paper to the Weber starter cubes last summer and like them better. This would be even more economical. Thanks!
