Title: Lime rescued from the dumpster
Post by: Cellar2ful on February 21, 2018, 08:07:37 AM
A few weeks ago, I posted about a guy that had given me a free load of Weber stuff, including a vintage rotisserie and shiskabob set. When I was picking up those items at his house, he mentioned having a neighbor that had passed away and his wife was being moved to an assisted living facility. He remembered them having an old bright green Weber on their back porch. He said he might be able to get it for me as family members were clearing the house, getting ready to sell it. Calmly, I said "Sure, I would be interested".

Fast forward to this past Sunday. I receive a text from the guy: "I got the lime green Weber. It does have a couple of dings in the finish but looks pretty well taken care of. It you want it it's yours." I picked it up on Monday.

Apparently the family was waiting for a dumpster to be delivered on Tuesday. This lime was sitting with a bunch of stuff in the garage and was going to be thrown in the dumpster on Tuesday. There is a little bit of crazing on the bowl, one small "grate pop" of porcelain and the rear bowl handle has been reattached with small bolts. Small bit of rim rash but the lid is in exceptional shape. Should clean up nicely and will be put into the cooking rotation.

Warmed up enough today so I could clean the exterior.  Think this is as far as I will go.  It is going to be a cooker and I find if I do a full restoration I'm reluctant to cook on it. The color on this lime is the most yellowish lime that I have come across.

The legs, lid vent and ash pan are terribly corroded due to being exposed to salt laden fog that frequents the Oakland hills where it came from.

Dealing with some of that salt laden fog corrosion myself at the moment...and I agree that lime has a very lemonish tint.

Spun a chicken the other night for my first cook on this lime. The photo may not show it but there is definitely a color change. The limes don't get darker like a red but there is a change in the shade of color. Next time I cook on it I will photograph another lime lid next to it while cooking.

Of all the kettle colors, I think the black rotisserie ring looks best on a key lime.

After this cook, I knew I could not leave the triangle all rusted like it was.  Once I took the wheels off, figured why not paint the whitewalls too.  Oh, and might as well sand and refinish the lid handle. So much for my "Think this is as far as I will go" statement. (lol) I swear this one will be cooked on again though.

This is my first two rivet handle I have tackled.  Sanded it lightly with #0000 steel wool and then applied two coats of Tung oil. Really happy with the results.

It is a bell style wire brush attachment for drills.  Works great on rusty triangles. Unfortunately, not on this triangle. The rust was to thick.  It worked on the outer rods but the inner rods and axle all had to have the rust removed by razor scraping.  Home Depot carries them.

Rust-Oleum satin white.  Painted the white walls by hand with a small, model paint brush.

The legs on this lime were badly corroded.

Probably the worst I have seen to date.

Because this kettle is going to be a cooker, I had planned on just leaving them in this condition.  That is until @Heyjude was over my house and commented "You've gone this far, why not restore the legs"?  Thanks for that AJ.

All ready to cook on again but looking much better.

Because the chrome was so badly damaged and rather than repainting the triangle, I am trying something different this time.  Once all the rust was removed, I sprayed the triangle with clear Rust-Oleum. I am hoping this will deter rust from returning since this lime will be stored outside in the elements.

I use a product recommended by @zavod44  called Rolite Supra 90.  It is a aircraft aluminum polish.  I previously used Mothers Mag polish but Rolite provides much better results in less time.  It is expensive but well worth it if you have been bitten by the kettle restoration bug.

Sweet! I did something similar last year, the neighbors were foreclosed and I spotted a black kettle among a bunch of junk in the yard. I gave them $10 for it, turned out to be a 1990 (M) in fairly good shape. With a little love it's happy and in use.

@Cellar2ful, How did you apply it for those results?  Not a bad value, considering the cost of new legs,as long as it doesn't dry up.

I've had my 2 lb can for over a year and no sign of drying. I still have just a little over 1/2 the can left.  I cut up old T shirts into 3"x 6" strips, folding them into 3" x 3" squares.  I use a popsicle stick, putting a blob of paste about the size of a dime on a 3"x 3" cloth and polishing until the rag turns black and gets hard to polish with.  Using these 3" x 3" squares, I can usually get 4 uses out of each one.  Using both sides, then turning the used sides to the inside, exposing a somewhat clean cloth.  It also helps in extending the Rolite as once turned inside out, the cloth is damp with Rolite from the previous applications and takes less to polish.   I also loosely put the lid back on every time I put some on the cloth.  If it is warm outside or windy, I believe it would dry out the contents left in the can.
