Title: My first Zav's...Imported from Canada
Post by: Jules V. on January 25, 2018, 11:39:09 AM
Once upon a time a nice man named @greenweb  from Ontario noticed the cheap hideous plastic handles on my red and grass green ssp's. So being a generous guy he is, he sent me not 1 but 2 Zav's handles.   With the handles coming from him, i had  no choice but to re-shape the taco assembly "greenweb style". Just slapping it on doesn't cut it.  So after an hour of cutting and reshaping, the handle is ready.  I'm so satisfied with the result that I'm contemplating installating a taco handle on the grass green. No idea what kind of wood they are but it sure does made a huge difference.
Thanks @greenweb!

Looks great.  I really like your slight re-working of the "Greenweb style" taco handle.

Thanks. It's a simplified version. Actually took me less than 30 minutes to reshape and complete the process. Next time i should be able to do it in 10 minutes or so.

Nice work on the handle strap. Much cleaner looking than mine. Both performers look great!  Birds Eye Maple and Zebra wood. More than happy to return some favor back.

Zav wood rocks. I have several.

I like what you did with the taco handle strap. If you decide to market them, I'll be your first customer!!

Couldn't be any happier with the Zav on the reshaped  taco assembly. I find myself staring at it. Looks even better in person than on the photos. The strap is not perpendicular being it's  spaced roughly 4 1/8" at the top and 4 3/4" at the bottom.  It has a very subtle but yet noticeable outward slope to it which is very pleasing to look at. Will definitely be reshaping my other tacos.  The only adjustment I'll be making is to lower the handle by maybe 3/8"-1/2".  The Zav handle and strap reshaping is a @greenweb brainchild so all credits goes to him.

Sorry brother but you'll never see me marketing these  new and improved tacos anytime soon. First of all, it's a very easy modification. Just cut, bend and drill. Not including sanding and polishing the strap, it should only take 15 minutes or so. Second, this is a @greenweb invention.
Other than that, it makes you wonder what weber's designers were thinking when they concocted this design. This modified version uses less material and definitely cheaper to manufacture.

Your handle reshaping is not same as what I did, so I can not take the credit for this. It did give me the idea to use the fireplace handle over the taco shell as an other option.

I will have to try your style handle strap when I get a chance.

I tried that. It doesn't fit. There would be some work involved which I didn't wan't to do at the time.

@greenweb

Don't have any idea regarding the height of the fireplace strap but I'm almost certain it's not tall enough to be used on top of the taco shell. You'll be cooking your knuckles on the shell.

The fireplace straps if I recall were the same size as the normal Weber handles. I found that they were just a bit to narrow to bolt onto the standard taco.

If the height of the fireplace strap is the same as the standard kettle handle, then it's way too short to be used atop the shell.

They worked for me, just had to spread them a tiny bit.

I've got the taco version of that lid.  If your non taco lid is in great condition with no chips/rim rash etc and you want to make a trade let me know!  Those performers look great!

@Lowbrass

If only a local trade I'll will jump on it. The lid is in excellent  condition except the  typical slight yellowing on the handle weld area. It's the only reason I'm not too fond of the welded handle especially on the lighter colored kettles. Only ly grill that i paid real money for it so shipping is not really an option. Thanks for the offer though.

My hunter green lowrider ssp felt left out so i decided to pimp it out a bit.  To fit the theme,  made the handle shorter by 1/2" compare to the redhead.  The shorter handle actually looks much better.

Very cool! Just realized all your SSP has diff. SS bars and plates to make each one unique. You definitely have your own style going with all your SSP.

Aside for the fasteners, i try  to use only recycled or re-purposed materials. Usually frequent thrift shops looking for items that i can re-purpose.   Some of those parts came from door pulls, golf clubs, kitchen utensils, old weber gassers,  lawn mower, etc. Probably spent less than $100 for parts on the 3 ssp's.

Jules, that last picture p.2 ... what's the horizontal strap do, the one screwed into the top of the bowl?

Also, you mentioned cutting and drilling. You're using new stock for the strap, or reworking Weber's taco strap?

The horizontal strap (elliptical plate), was placed there to cover up holes that was created by a rusted out handle strap welds. When i got the grill (N code ssp),  one side of the handle was rusted through the lid and fully detached.  Other side was basically the same.  I'm not a welder so the plates (there's a rectangular plate inside the lid also), was my solution  to conceal the holes and rust on the adjacent areas. By the way this is the first used grill that i picked up, which coincidentally  made me join wkc. Got it free to boot. The rest of the lid, bowl and frame are in great shape.

Ok I think i might have misunderstood you  on the horizontal bar. The horizontal bar  on the green  bowl  is  used to cover up the the chopped off bowl handle. That bowl was originally an okp.

Also, the strap was reused.  It has to be shortened by at least 1" so therefore new holes must be drilled also.

I see the other side's plate now, too. I'm surprised that a Performer bowl would have two bowl handles. I know several of the early models had one, "hidden away" by the table. My '92 is like that.

Now i think i really i confused you.  The green lid n bowl  was originally a Jameson (2016) okp so it has 2 bowl handles. The red N code that is original to the ssp frame has only 1 bowl handle. If you look closely under the taco assembly, there's a strap/ plate underneath it.  There's one inside the bowl also. Those plates are used to conceal the holes and rust spots that i mentioned on my prior reply.
