I have had 2-3 standard chrome cooking grates from Weber that have never seen a S'nS or Vortex and within 3-4 cooks the chrome was burned off above the coals.
By burned off I mean that the chrome layer is 100% GONE from the grate above the coals and I can easily see copper or brass under plating.
1st time I saw this it was really bad and not just a small spot. This was on my new 2011 22" Premium Grill with Weber flipper grate using the Weber charcoal baskets for indirect cooking and by the 3rd cook the flippers were yellow from the copper or brass. At the same time I could see the entire lid was covered with white/Gray dust? Chrome Smoke ?
I had this also with my smokey joe from about the same age.. but by that time I was being more careful about getting coals close to the grates, but it had the same results.
Since that time I have had many grills and most of them were older and none of them ever showed the same type of damage. Even my 1978 weathered warrior had the factory grate and was in better shape after so long.
I have since been lucky enough to score myself an assortment of SS Weber grates that I use 100% of the time so I don't have this problem anymore.
I'm just wondering if anyone else noticed a problem with the chrome grates from around 2010-13?

Never saw that before. Sure, I've burned all the plating off over the Vortex... Hmmm
Pics would probably help a bit more here. I did see that with normal use the nickel plating did discolor and looked like brass or copper but with stock baskets I did not have it burn off or pit on me.

The only burnt grate I have now is my SJ .. here is a photo of the under side where it's burned off. The rest of the grate looks like new even with 1.5-2 years of hard use!

It's not rusty, just thin chrome down to the copper plating.

I'd call or email Weber customer service and send them the pics. They might send you replacement grates.
I had my 22" flipper covered by warranty at a major Weber dealer here and at the same time paid $12 more and they upgraded me to a GBS grate.
That GBS was fine and did not burn the chrome. I had that until I got my SS GBS grate .. then I flipped a grill and the chrome GBS went with it.
When I asked for the warranty replacement , the dealer looked at it and ask me "what the hell happened to that?"

I have a grate or two with that same chrome stripping (not rust). Did weber replace it?

Ja, my 22" flipper was replaced by a big Weber dealer here.
Other ones were placed in flip grills.

Out of curiosity, what is the material/coating of a standard issue grate, fresh out the box for all charcoal kettles?
Stainless steel grates are they that much more long lasting?
Stainless steel grates , do you buy the replacements direct from Weber for say a 22.5"?

Please tell me more about the SS GBS grate. Where did you find it?
Thanks,
Robert
Sorry @Robert , I'm not sure if Weber sells it in the states?

Euro part number only :/
Makes no sense.
Europeans always get the cool stuff.

Give me a break !
I said that I was sorry !!
You need to bitch at Weber and demand that the states can buy what Europe gets... and other country's can get.
I don't understand why Weber does what they do or doesn't do.
If they sold the SS GBS grate in USA .. can you imagine how many of them they could sell?
And they would last forever... but maybe that's the problem?
Maybe Weber knows if they offer the SS GBS grate in USA that so many people would buy them.. and then never buy a replacement grate again? Killing there replacement parts sales.

I wasn't bitching at you
@vwengguy I understand it's no fault of the guys who get all the colors and kick ass accessories. Just stating it makes no sense to me why Weber makes that call. If I could ask for the item by part number, pay, and have it shipped to me that would be sweet. No need to stock HD shelves with SS GBS grates. Just let me order one over the phone.

The standard grates and GBS grates offered for sale in the US are chrome plated. Stainless Steel grates are almost twice the cost of standard grates, but are less prone to rust and corrosion from the acids in foods, BBQ sauces and marinades. 304 Stainless Steel grates are pretty much a one time investment. There are several choices as to sourcing SS grates.
Weber SS 2 door hinged grate for 22" part #80728 approx $75 (not listed on Webers web site - you have to call Weber CS)
Killa Grilla SS 2 door hinged grate for 22" $75 + shipping http://killagrilla.com/ **$10 off promotion this month (January)
ABC Barbecue SS single door hinged grate for 22" $70 + shipping https://abcbarbecue.com/product/22-cooking-grate/
Here is a comparison review on the Killa Grilla SS grates:

I guess I'm just lucky. My chrome grates seem to last forever so I can't imagine spending the money for stainless. Only grates I've had to replace are from a couple used grills that had rusted out grates. However, I'm not sure I would have noticed a spot like that as all of my grates are black from use.
And if I ever have to replace a grate, I'm getting the standard non flip chrome grates.

+1 I think it would be great if someone (Killa Grilla or ABC) can make a SUPER DUTY SS flipper GBS grate!

According to Mark Baron(bellexinc. msn.com) at Killa Grilla, it's one of the product they're currently considering. Everyone should start bombarding him with a request to go for it.
I have an aversion for rust on my kettles so i use ss as much as possible. All of my sweeps, burners, nuts n bolts, charcoal grates, and grill grates except the gbs are all ss. I was throwing away grates every 6-9 months before i transitioned to ss.

SS sweeps and burners were used on gen2 performers. I acquired 9 gen2's since summer mostly for the ss sweeps and burners. A 7-10years old sweeps will outlast a brand new sweeps.

A total PITA to get out, but worth the effort as Jules V. mentioned. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180112/952262540163233c55e2533d753a56c1.jpg)

Those ss sweeps are much sturdier than the aluminized version. The whole assembly is ss. You just polish it off and it will shine like new.
This has been asked and rehashed. Can you still order the SS sweeps from Weber?

No more SS sweeps from weber, 18" or 22". Maybe they were slow movers and weber decided not to renew.

Bummer. When did they discontinue them?
These guys list them at over twice the price. Wonder if they could deliver as they are special order.
