Title: One regular size basket
Post by: HoosierKettle on August 22, 2017, 06:36:29 AM
For some reason I've never tried using one regular weber charcoal basket. I've either used 2 baskets, no baskets, or the big basket.

Last night I used a single regular size basket for stuffed peppers. I lit some used weber coals in the basket over the gas assist. I was surprised how much heat a small amount of coals produced. It was 400+ degrees so I had to half vent the bottom vents to cook around 350. I think I've been using way way too much charcoal than I need to. I reuse it but a single basket with a little coal lights fast and leaves plenty of real estate on a 22 kettle. I was very pleased with the results. I'll be doing this more often unless I need a large sear area.

Yum! That's a good idea. Sometimes less is better.

Yep. Surprising how little fuel is actually required to run a cook. I played around with the same thing idea last year and was very happy with how much further your charcoal will go.

Your peppers look great man. I need to try that. Care to share your recipe?

I used Malcolm's recipe. I'm not really a stuffed peppers guy but these were very good.  I probably like my wife's baked stuffed peppers with a tomato sauce better though.

I've been using only one basket quite a bit, especially with the new Weber Charcoal.  I've done both slow-n-low cooks with one basket (ribs) and hot cooks.

Never even thought to use only one.  Right in front of me the whole time.  Nice cook, looks great!

The last cook you posted using one basket is what inspired me to try it.

And yeah that weber coal is fantastic stuff.

I know, right?  I can't believe I hadn't tried it until now.

1 basket is how I do most of my cooks that are indirect only.

...peppers look awesome!

I've also got into the habit of reusing any left over Weber briquettes from my previous cook - that way, I don't feel like I'm chucking away my cash with left over briquettes after a cook (I used to bin left over briquettes  :-[ ). It's definitely surprising that used briquettes can be used more than once!

I use one basket for smoking bacon and turds.

I'm using one basket for some spares that I cut the tips off tonight. 2.5 hours at 325ish. Getting close but not done. My family expressed their disgust at only cooking one rack.

I'm currently using the weber charcoal. One of my customers gave me a bag of stubbs so I'll finally get to try that out at some point.

I'll look forward to your comparison. Once I finish the Royal Oak this week I'll bust into some Weber fuel. My OCD won't let me open multiple bags of different brands.

I have another rack ribs I'll save the Stubbs for.

Here is a very rough guideline I've figured out with using 1 basket.

225-275 last 4 hour. Top and bottom vents half.

275-325 lasts 3 hour. Top vent wide open bottom half open.

325-400+ lasts 2 hours. All vents open.

Mileage will vary but gives an idea.

I'm loving the 1 basket method.
