Title: Got one...
Post by: jaynik on August 06, 2017, 07:41:00 AM
After several unsuccessful attempts and foolishly passing on some good opportunities, I scored my first red this morning. Thank goodness I don't sleep because I was the first to go after this one which was posted late last night. A few messages and a 50 mile journey got me there. It's imperfect but that's what I  wanted because I want to cook on it.  All of the daisies have fallen off.  One of the leg sockets is rusty but I think it will hold well enough to be a permanent rotisserie cooker.

I think this is in the 72-76 date range. I'm happy.  Has the original cooking grate without hinges.  I'll prolly dump it.  Thought I was pretty lucky that the ash pan was still with it.

Looks great to me! Porcelain looks pretty good even with a couple chips.

Always a grate day when you bring your first redhead home to meet the family.

Hold on a minute. That's a nice redhead and please don't "dump" the original grate. You won't find the new ones to be of the same quality. If you don't want it put it in member trades. I'm sure someone would take it off your hands. Congrats.

@kettlebb if someone wants the original grate, they can have it.  I won't chuck it.  I'll remove the foil it was wrapped in though.  :-)

Get it hot, scrape both sides, coat with oil and use it another 10 years.

I did end up cooking a fresh kielbasa that a local place makes.  Tasted great!  :-)  I did not however use the old grate to cook it.  I dunno.  It's pretty chewed up.  I'm not much of a collector as I am a functional guy, so the nostalgia may be lost on me.  I won't throw it away.

I'm still a bit rusty at dating the MBH lineup. Hard to tell without the lower vents? You think you can drill out the rivets and install new ones?  Don't know how hard of a job that would be. Love love love the red cookers. Looks great.

I don't think I'll drill out the old rivets. This is going to be a rotisserie grill so I'll need full speed ahead all the time anyway. I worry about the one leg joint that is rusted through the bowl.  I guess I'll cook on it until it dies if ever.

@Troy made a great video to show how to repair that.

Congrats @jaynik!  Glad you were finally able to get your hands on one. I'd drill/bolt that leg socket and keep that thing grilling for years...

Thanks @Neil_VT00 .  You know how long I was looking out for this.  Glad I got one I can cook on finally!
